Well, soap works against lice too. One lathers up and leaves the lather on for hours and the insects die, but not the eggs.

One repeats the same process every day and over a period of 2 weeks the last eggs are all hatched and gone. One speeds up the process by using the nit comb to remove eggs, but nit combs always miss some that are deposited deep into a follicle. For them the soap works. Soap foam may function by cutting off air supply, but one observes that fleas exposed to soap dry up after falling off. Part of the effect may be because the insect is no longer able to retain moisture.

In my childhood, the late 1940s early 1950s the smell of lifeboy soap would fill the whole school as we all took to washing our hair at the same time, leaving the foam on the scalp for the whole afternoon. The brand of soap was not significant. It was cheap and effective.

Once the infestation was gone from the school, we would comb the hair with linseed oil, not the expensive cold pressed oil, just the stuff painters used. We then combed repeatedly to keep any eggs out of the hair. The oil made eggs slip off the hair, but it may also have been hard on any adults.

Today I expect that we might use head and shoulders with xinc pyrethrin, again foam left on the hair for hours. It works much the way our soap foam would have worked, but costs more so it must be better. Use of oil to get the eggs to slip off would still be needed, if only because kids complain so much when eggs are jerked off without oil.

Not knowing any better at the time I did so and he had an alergic reaction. The doctor told me to use a different preparation for the follow up treatment, which I did and he had a similar reaction. When I told this to a friend of mine she told me that she used a certain shampoo that has no nasty chemicals (principally SLS) and whenever there is a lice scare she uses a nit comb and puts a little tea tree or eucalytus oil in the shampoo and it works everytime. Since then my kids have never had lice, nits etc. When I tried to bring up the sollution at the Parents and Citizens Association meeting the principal told me that the school could not recommend any treatment that wasn't endorsed (by whom?) so it wasn't published in the newsletter. Didn't stop me telling as many people as I could though and I am still telling people.

Once a week for 4 weeks I saturated head and hair in the evening, showered the next morning and I ended a long time infestation in my whole family that wouldn't respond to any conventional medication.

And my daughters have very long, beautiful hair. It seemed to also have the added benifit of strengthening and conditioning the hair and scalp.

I have since found this oil to be a very effective repellent for any "creapy crawly." I've used a diluted form on my dogs for fleas.

My mom was careful though, she only made us use an anti-lice lotion only once, then we moved on to "mediker" an shampoo. The final thing that did the trick though very unconvetional. Was kerosene.

Yes kerosene the one which you use in lighter and stoves. You do not apply it to the scalp, but adults can. You have to dip a towel in kerosene and wrap it around your head and try to see the the fumes dont get into your eyes.

I really dont know how safe this treatment is but I am sure it would be safer than this poison.

Now I have another theory for lice I dont know if it would work, but someone with better knowledge can let me know and Dr. Mercola could even put it on his website.

I feel that Lice need to breath right. So if you put them in liquid then they would not be able to breath and die right. So why not sumberge your scalp in water for half an hour. I think the lice may float to the top. You could even submerge your head in oil or a mixture of essentail oils.

I have seen an ayurvedic treathment where they place the head in a specially descinge bowl/basin which contains oil. The entire head is submerged only leaving the face above and then oil is poured continously on the forehead.

I feel that to be completely submerged one could use a scuba diver kind of apparatus to be able to breath under water/oil.

There is reason why anise oil and other oil remove lice but only to 92%. I think if the entire head is submerged then it will be 100% effective in 1 sitting.

The ofcourse we will have use a nit comb to get rid of the nits.

Because lice have to breath so lets drown them.

I fee that submerging your head in a bathtub full of water should also drown them.

I think that short hair would be useful as the lice might not be able to hide in the hair(but still I dont think there could be pockets of air in long hair. Maybe combing it underwater once could do the trick.

What say anyone is this good enough to be a treatment.

We used the www.nuvoforheadlice.com method of treatment. For this you use Cetaphil cleanser, a very gentle skin cleansing lotion. You "glop" it on the hair and work it in very thoroughly, then comb out the excess with a fine tooth comb or the nit comb. Use a towel to clean the comb between strokes. Then dry the hair with a hair dryer and leave the cleanser in for 8 hours. Then wash as usual. This is much better than olive oil or mayo because it is easy to wash out. You must repeat the treatment after 7 days, and again 7 days after that. The website explains the timing, which is due to the life cycle of the head lice. I believe the Harvard website mentioned above also tells about the life cycle. You will also need to put sheets and towels etc. thru the hot dryer to get rid of any there. I also treated myself as a just in case measure, even though I never found any on my head. It's easy, it's inexpensive, and IT'S NONTOXIC! This was the treatment recommended by our doctor's office, although they were a little sketchy on the details and the web site is better for that.
