I have seen many videos that I wish I never saw. The pictures are forever stamped into my memory. This not only happens to cows but is happening to chickens, horses, pigs, dogs, seals, etc. I commend the organizations that fight for the rights of animals who cannot speak out and many times cannot defend themselves against the cruel sick ways of some human beings. If we were to treat another human being like this we would be locked up for the rest of our lives or even sent to the electric chair. We would be considered crazy, a threat and too emotionally unstable to remain in with the rest of society. So why aren't the same laws there to protect these animals who don't deserve to live out their lives being beaten and tortured until they die? Some people don't want to know the truth and others just don't know the truth of what goes on in this country and others. But I will say that everytime I eat meat now those images pass through my mind and it saddens me to think what some animal is going through at that very moment. I do not buy grass-fed as I have not found a source yet, but I do make sure that all the meat I buy is through a source that ensures the animals are treated very humanely. Everyone needs to stand up and join in on saving the animals from this abuse by supporting the organizations like the Humane Society that fight for their rights and by getting out there and doing something about it ourselves. Being active and letting our voices be heard is the only way we can truly help these animals. The cruelty has to stop! Help those poor animals that cannot help themselves against such abuse. http://www.hsus.org/

I really believe some of us need meat. I have tried being vegetarian and it doesn't work for me as I confirmed once again last night. Just last week a friend of mine turned me onto to a company that is connected to an all natural beef ranch in Montana. I tried the meat and it was juicy and delicious. Then she told me if I shared it with a few others I could get my meat for free. Well ok.

I went with my son-in-law last summer to take a load of cull cows to a slaughter house in South Caroline. These culls were from a herd of about 800 Black Angus cows. It has to be done ever year in a herd that size.

The payment by the slaughter house for these cull cows was about $1.00/lb on the hoof.

There was one old cow that would not get out of the truck. She was finally pushed out but fell down on the runway into the slaughter house. Electric prods were tried but she would not get up. Electric prods are standard tools to get cows to move, it startles them; but no major hurt. I know because I have been shocked by one, hurts but not a major pain.

Anyway, the cow would not get up and the rules of the slaughter house are that the cow has to WALK into the slaughter house. If they cannot WALK IN they are killed with a "bangstick" and taken to another area to be made into pet food. The other cull cows that WALKED in are made into sausage, hot dogs, etc.

Mad Cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathty) is transmitted directly from ingestion of contaminated meat that is put in bovine feeds. The contaminated meat would be beef that was already infected with the "prion'' organism (or protein--research has not shown exactly what the nature of the organism is that the disease is actually caused by). What IS known, is that transmission of this disease only occurs by ingestion of meat in this way, not by fecal, inhaled, etc routes of a ''live'' pathogen like e. coli or a cold virus for example. Therefore the occurrence of this disease, and the transmission of it to humans, is not dependent on whether or not the cow or steer is sick due to other reasons like malnutrition, overcrowding stress, corn-based diets. etc... It is dependent on whether or not the animal has eaten/been fed infected beef parts in its feed. (This is a despicable practice, mostly of large factory-type farms, and we are certainly paying for it dearly. Mother Nature definitely has a way of showing us humans the error of our ways).. sincerely, Doc G, VMD

Before the animals even get there they are aleady full of antibiotics, covered with untreated sores, wormy and lacking nutrients from never seeing the light of day or being fed a processed diet, many force fed, no muscle movement as they lie in stalls or stand and can't even move. No exercise, more fat in the meat. This is just one of millions of processing plants across the world. Get your steak and add some garlic grown in the toxins in the Chinese soil, that's all we have on the shelves. When you buy from the big supermarkets you get what you think to be inspected meat but everyone is in it for the almighty dollar and that costs lives. I hope none of these cattle had mad cow disease but who knows? It will eventually start showing up. Have you noticed the inrease in Type 1 Diabetes with young babies and children... eating processed foods full of antibiotics, resulting in no immune systems. The old ways were the best ways when an egg tasted good and wasn't that bad for you because you exercised walking to the store. Did housework gardened, now you hire someone or it doesn't get done at all. All around man has to change his ways or face more and more disease and hearth and cancer related deaths.

In England, whenever foot & mouth disease rears its head, hundreds of small-scale and organic farms are shut down after the forced slaughter and burning of their entire stock 'just in case', because they are within 'range' of a farm where one or more animals have been found infected.

Our government contracts out the task, including removal and disposal of the carcasses, to approved companies with "expert and specially trained personnel" yet farmers report that gangs of illegal immigrants are deposited on their land to do the job. Some admit that they were picked up that morning off the street by a stranger and promised cash at the end of the day, others ask the farmer for a job!

Big corporate farms usually survive, of course. The bigger the investment, the greater the opportunities for corruption and mutual backscratching, and the giant farms can easily be controlled in the corridors of power. The powers that be do not want us to have a choice.

A local farm has grass-fed, happy, healthy cows that graze all day. Their diet is supplemented with sprouted pulses in the winter, not grains. The raw milk is wonderful (and delivered to those lucky enough to live there). The farm is quite happy for people to 'meet the meat'. They also produce pork and lamb and all their meat tastes wonderful. Yes, the beef is a much darker colour than the stuff in supermarkets.

I don't know about the arrangements for slaughter and the law in England - I'll ask next time I'm there.

At the same time the FDA did recall the meat from these slaughtered animals, but the co-mengled meat was never recalled. So what was put onthe market? Mad Cow animals? It will take a few years to discover the answer to that question, and only when people begin to suffer the symptoms. However this is a good example, as to who gives these animals a physical before slaughter? The answer, no one. It is a crap shoot as to whether you become ill from eating diseased meat. Oh how lucky.
