Jesus and other New Testament people clearly also ate meat. Vegetarianism cannot be supported by the Bible.

Portion size was small compared to being in a restaurant in the big city. Miso soup with fresh tofu, fish, and veggies- yum!

We were primarily vegetarian, but had fish or shrimp several times a year. When I knew I was pregnant I immediately increased the amount of eggs, goat milk/cheese, and fish in my diet.

Since I began drinking COMMERCIAL soymilk (Edensoy, WestSoy, Vitasoy, Pearl) I have had a big problem dropping the 30 lbs. i gained after having my son 20 years ago! Yes, I was bad and ate 'standardized' foods back then and what a big mistake that was! We were ostracized and chided about our 'dangerous vegetarian/pescatorian' diet. He has eaten poultry since kindergarten and red meat occasionally since middle school. He is lean and strong today. Taking a cue from the Metabolic Type suggestions, I'm raising my protein levels, reducing starch carbs, and have begun to lose weight. If you gain 2 -5 lbs. a year, in a few years it becomes scary to look in the mirror or try to fit into your clothes!

I am weaning myself off the commercial soymilk and transitioning to goat milk &/or organic 1/2 & 1/2 for coffee. I am allergic to cow milk products, but after 1 1/2 years of probiotics, I can have small amounts of Dairy again. I still have soy in small amounts if it is Fresh & Organic. There is no place I know of on the South Side that has raw milk for me to buy and try. Greek yogurt (Fage & others) have 3 - 6 types of probiotic bacteria in them - very digestible!

The use of soy in animal feed is something to take note of.

A lot of good info but......it's now known meat causes cancer, as does dairy. soy is like most foods—good for some, not for others. what a surprise. since you all like scientific information here's some.

Soybeans affect 123 genes involved in prostate cancer. gene p53--function: kills mutant cells. a soy constituent called lunasin increases 123 different genes in prostate cells that suppress tumor growth, initiate the the repair of damaged DNA and promote apoptosis, the programmed suicide of damaged cells before they begin to multiply.

To date I have no major or minor illnesses, and expect to enter retirement with the same health. For many years I made my own tofu and 'split' the soy milk with boiling sea water, however, the 'almost fresh' variety sold in my local asian store seems ok. I suppose the best study would be to find more examples like myself which would pre-empt the best scientific research. Yes, you could argue that because of my persona I would have the same result should I have chosen a non-tofu vegetarian lifestyle...however, I very much doubt it!

One moment soy is all good, the next moment it is all bad unless fermented.

I happen to love tofu, and am lucky to have access to a locally produced product made fresh from

organic, non-GMO beans. We eat a one pound block a week, sometimes 2. I feel great on it.

We also eat it mixed with warming spices, like garlic, ginger and peppers, to balance the excessively

cool nature of tofu.

As for the meat question: my favorite recipe for soup starts with: "Sharpen the Axe". Yes, I am a

chicken killer. They enjoy a brief but pleasant life, a merciful quick death, and I know what has

gone into them.

After about a decade of mainly chicken and fish I have lately found myself craving red meat.

As someone else said, Life feeds on Life. No feedlot beef, just small amounts of organic buffalo

now and then.

Some nice balanced articles on the whole vegan topic can be found at the website of Chet Day:

http://chetday.com Look for "When Halleluja becomes "what happened?"

The gist of it is that people often feel wonderful when they stop eating junk and turn to a clean

plant-based diet, but after a few years the deficiencies start showing. Lacto-ovo can work, vegan

cannot.

Another nice article on the website of Dr. Ben Kim, "Don't let ideology interfere with what works".

The bottom line is always: Listen to the Doctor within! How does it feel?

I live in Indonesia and we can find tempeh in abundance with price per 350 grams of 30 cents. I find it a good protein source when I want to reduce animal protein. The only grain product I have currently beside tempeh is fermented brown rice and oatmeal. Though I only take the grain in a very limited amount, less than 50 grams per day. At 50, I maintain a waist/ hip proportion of slightly below 0.8 and have not taken any doctor's medicine for 3 years. A hard journey for me to leave whole wheat bread: before it was my favorite.

Dr. Mercola, If you could live in my body for one day after I consume less than .01 gram of soy in any form, you would beg for mercy and lay down thinking you were about to die. After more than 15 years of living hell, and 12 near death experiences from eating some food with hidden soy, I can only tell you that soy is not healthy for any human body in any form what-so-ever.

I hear of people of all ages dropping over dead for no real apparent reason as a result of consuming hidden soy in their foods.

Want the answer to the poor bee's problem? Years ago they avoided soy like crazy! With the genetically altered soy plant, so the bitter smell, taste, and apparent energy of the plant are now supposedly tamed, the healthy bees enjoy the unrecognizable poison of the pollinating of this plant, suffer irreversible damage to their own nervous system, and fly away to die.

I have tried to assist other persons with psoriasis, red cheeks that do not heal, blistering and severe itching of the skin, etc. to get soy totally out of their diets. And, lo and behold, no more skin disease, better mental health, functioning bowels, and healthy bodies.

I hope this helps someone.

Respectfully, Lana
