When I was studying for Open University exams (in Holland) I kept finding that I couldn't concentrate at home. I have a history of being easily distracted anyway. Your throat gets dry so you go to make a cup of tea, then you notice some dishes need doing, then you look in the fridge for a snack, then you realise that needs cleaning, and isn't that thing starting on the telly in 5 minutes?

So I tried something else. Took all my books with me to the office then went straight from work to a local cafe/bar where I didn't know anyone. The noise and bustle of the bar washed over me without being distracting at all - better than the silence or tv at home. I just spread everything out on a table and ordered food and drinks (not alcohol!) from the bar. More expensive than a library but also more pleasant. It worked and I passed with flying colours.

I'm pretty sure it was about change. If I had been in the habit of hanging around in bars every evening, it wouldn't have worked. I've read that one of the beneficial/changing things about a walk on the beach or in a forest is the strange collection of sounds and other stimuli that you don't normally experience; altogether, they're such a big, positive 'assault' on the senses, not your familiar pattern, and so induce almost a trance state or 'kick-start' you into action.

It's hard to study on a beach, though. Oh no wait, I've done that as well! :)

Like eating habits, sleeping habits are all too often too strictly limited. For many people, it is much healthier to have 4 or even 5 small 'mealets' each day than the usual 3. Likewise, for many, it is much healthier to have a 5 to 15 minute nap 1,2,3 or 4 times during the day than to force it all into the night hours (especially if those hours are few, ie <7). This does not mean that anyone should try cutting all sleep periods too short, since a certain amount of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is essential, and it takes many people several hours to reach an effectively deep level of REM sleep.

He is always griping that he never has enough time for this or that -- yet he constantly rotates rigorous "hobbies" in and out of his life -- such as learning Ice Hockey, or participating in grueling cross country motorcycle journeys that are more about getting there in X amount of time rather than enjoying the scenery and freedom.

"I never have any free time!"
