She was suffering dementia and I had been trying for months to convince her doctor she was in danger living alone. She was obese most of her life, developed late onset type2 diabetes and was on statins for many years.

She was found after a fall, after I phoned emergency services because I couldn't raise her by phone. She was 80 and on the floor with severe hypothermia (32 C). At the hospital (they'd taken her by the time I got to her house) they asked me if she suffered from Parkinson's because she was shaking so violently. Amazingly, after 3 days on a ward for the almost-dead, she started to recover. A CAT scan found no trace of a stroke and an MRI was never carried out but it was pretty obvious: she could not swallow or speak and half of her body and face were paralysed. Over the next 4 months she made a complete recovery: full bladder/bowel control, able to feed herself, speak as normal and walk even better than before. Sadly, her mind had deteriorated further and they started her on antipsychotics. The first made her depressed but did not reduce the delusions. The second, Halperidol, caused Parkinson's symptoms and when she couldn't move or speak at all they took her off it; she never recovered fully from its effects and I found out this is characteristic of Lewie Bodies sufferers.

Perversely, nursing homes are not that keen on agile dementia sufferers because they're a nuisance.

My doctor also prescribed a statin, which I refused to take. I wrote him a letter and included two printouts from Dr. Mercola's articles, which outlined all of the extremely harmful effects that statins can, and do, cause. On my next visit to my doctor, he said he didn't agree with Dr. Mercola, but he respected my decision not to take statins. My doctor said that Dr. Mercola would probably wind up eventually taking statins himself. I had to keep myself from laughing. My doctor obviously isn't into alternative medicine or the benefits of organic foods. I will be looking for another doctor.

Back in the 1950's turkeys were dying of stroke and farmers were losing a lot of income. How did they stop turkeys from dying? They added copper to their diet and now turkeys no longer die before their time (slaughter). Minerals and vitamins play a vital role in our health, and since the soil has often been depleted of these important substances, diseases occur.

I know people who eat lots of potatoes, corn, GMO foods, drink soda in moderation, eat sweets, pastuerized milk and are HEALTHY and OLD. One of them is my husband's 97 year old grandma who lives in a "mother-in-law" suite at her daughter's, is not on any medicine, still walks, talks, cooks, lightly cleans, and is sharp as a tack. This woman eats all things in moderation and always has. She was rather heavy when young (German/Dutch heritage), and she has only thinned down in the last 10 years. She is active (for a 97 year old) and she has never gone out of her way to eat non-processed foods. She did garden most of her life (except the last 20 years), canned, dried, and froze what she grew, and she has lived on white bread, white potatoes, and white rice.

I hope my husband inherited her genes!!!! :)

With all this said, we avoid HFCS as much as possible, and we take colloidal vitamins and minerals (liquid form) as I believe very strongly that a lack of minerals can be just as dangerous, if not worse, than lack of vitamins.

I am sure there are many factors contributing to stroke in middle aged women: birth control (estrogen dominance), wrong fats, sugars, stress, and lack of proper nutrition.

This is one area where there is not a "One-Size-Fits-All" solution. Each woman would need to give a complete life history of medicines, foods, lifestyle, and disease factors in order to see if there is a pattern, or if each case is unique to the individual. But I still maintain that a lack of minerals cause many of the health problems in our country. Foods are part of this.

I was ordered to quit working at the laundry detergent factory by my Environmental doctor when my blood was thick and sticky from exposures and I was on the verge of a stroke. I had all the symptoms i.e. slurred speech, staggered gait, dizziness, nausea, numbness on left side of body but I was able to escape it. I did a series of vitamin and mineral IVs followed by chelation IVs to get better.

It seems that there is a rise of fibromyalgia, lupus, and other conditions that have hypercoagulation as a major symptom are on the rise as well. This is the one common disease symptom of Gulf War Syndrome. From my research, these diseases seem to all have a component of toxic exposure. The body's immune system is diminished and viral/bacterial invaders abound. The blood system creates extra fibrin to "capture" the invaders and attach them to the arterial walls. These "packets" collect other debris, cholesterol, more fibrin etc. Imagine what happens when they break loose?! Perhaps stroke!

There are many toxins in our environment (food additives, HFCS, hormones, plastics, medications, etc) and they are causing many different diseases. I just wonder if medical science will ever catch up and make the connection that we are toxify-ing ourselves to death!

The first is potatoes: “you don't want to eat spuds & corn anyway....neither are particularly good for you....” nidavis.

I agree with the corn part but I like potatoes. I know Dr. Mercola calls them ‘lumps of sugar’ and many others say they are not good for you. But I disagree. I come from family of farmers in Kentucky. They ate meat and potatoes seven days a week and they all lived well into their nineties. And that was while working their farms seven days a week. It was not until my more immediate family moved to the cities that they began dying of strokes and heart attaches in their seventies.

Just a little information: White potatoes are 10% protein with all of the essential amino acids provided in generous amounts. These tubers have 2.5 grams of dietary fiber per potato. That translates into 50 grams for an active man and 37 grams for an active woman. Potatoes are very high in vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium and other minerals. In animal experiments potatoes have been shown to have a particularly potent cholesterol-lowering effect. Feeding rats a potato-enriched diet for 3 weeks led to a 30% decrease in cholesterol and a 36% decrease in triglyceride levels.

People in New Guinea who live on diets consisting almost entirely of sweet potato tubers and leaves have cholesterol levels, on the average, of 108 mg/dl.8 Heart disease, obesity, inflammatory arthritis, colon cancer, and type-2 diabetes are unknown in these people on their sweet potato diet.

There were times in history (which I cannot recall the exact times) that certain parts of countries subsisted almost entirely on potatoes. Ireland, Poland, and Russia to name a few.

And potatoes are what most early sailors carried on boats to ward off scurvy.

I wish people would stop knocking potatoes. I like them and eat a lot of them.

Home alcohol consumption seems to have increased as the 'pub culture' is eroded with the smoking ban and increased cost of socialising (taxis, food, price of drinks, etc). Women now have similar disposable incomes as men, but are choosing to spend it more and more on alcohol. Men are smoking & drinking less and less, but women, more and more, It pains me to see young teenage girls & women smoking in an effort to stay thin and also bingeing on alcohol regularly. Perhaps the advertising industry should be added to the 'bad guys' who 'spin' the message of big pharma, food companies, et al.

Alpha Lipoic Acid has been proven to increase NO, and in mice models, nearly completey reverses the effects of a stroke. This master antioxidant is also a proven treatment, mainly in Germany, for Diabetic neruopathy. Imagine how effective this nutrient is if it can heal nerves in feet by increasing the blood flow in the micro vessels which supply blood to periferial nerves.

The take home message is that everyone over 45 should be taking Alpha Lipoic Acid everyday. Some one send this message to Dr. Mercola, and I will be good money he will agree. Cameron
