Class action law suits occured with more than 300 plaintiffs, but the manufacturers still did not put a warning on the label that I have seen recently. They did end up paying plaintiffs 12 million dollars. I was asked by a lawyer to participate in the law suit after contacting the lawyer representing the plaintiffs, but the only suits that went to court were the ones from the nasal spray.

My damage occurred from using the lozenges; the lozenges burned my tongue, causing me to cough, and I recall my tongue becoming numb for more than 24 hours and my sense of smell was greatly diminished from that point on. This was totally denied by the company and there were too few other plantiffs to represent the lozenge effect. One does not appreciate their sense of smell until it is gone. I now have to be very careful when cooking as I cannot smell the gas from the stove and cannot smell foods burning, etc.

Since this happened to me, I would not suck a zinc lozenge nor use the nasal spray. When I called the company (Matrixx, branch Quigley) about my loss of sense of smell using the product, the nurse I spoke with (why did the company need a nurse hotline?) told me that she had heard of it she thought, but was not really sure if she heard of that side effect, even tho the law suits were in progress. So use zinc lozenges and nasal spray very carefully. I personally would use the tablets you swallow and low dose frequently rather than one big large dose.

The FDA received complaints but has allowed the company to continue to manufacture these products freely.

It depends on the cause and the severity. In a small child, it can soon lead to dangerous levels of dehydration. But should it be stopped as a matter of course?

I was brought up to believe that both diarrhoea and vomiting were good (apart from with migraine attacks) in that they were getting rid of something, but later was taught that excessively loose motions are the result of the peristalsis of the gut - the various sphincter muscles that control it along the way - being interfered with by toxins (from pathogens), rather than the body somehow 'deciding' to get rid of something. I also have in my belief system the idea that severely 'churning' guts (ie rumbling and cramps) are at risk of forming kinks and obstructing themselves. Now that I write that part down, it looks sort of unlikely.

I hadn't thought about it for a while but, since improving my diet, I don't think I've had it in ages (she said, tempting fate).

Place a tablet on the tongue and let it dissolve. If it tastes bitter, you don't need it. If there is no taste you do. Your body knows and will tell you if you listen!

Zinc is good for the digestive system, and does not disturb the essential balance between good bacteria, and the bad bacteria, so essential to a healthy immune system. Alas, though I fear once the conection is found concerning the health benefits, "Big Pharma" will attempt to have zinc removed from, or restricted from the general public. Very much the same manner comfrey, tryptophan, and the attacks on stevia, all became a matter of fact when the truth became public.

If it isn't added to the soil, how can plants and animals absorb what isn't there? And what kind of beef? Grain fed beef which is high in omega 6, or beef rich in omega 3's because it is raised on grass out in the field? And why were oysters not on the list? Most other lists have oysters as the best source of zinc.

Our water is acidic here and the shower curtain and tub turn green with leached copper from using the shower. New Chapter makes a food source zinc that I use.

I wasn't impressed with the numbers of helped kids in the study. I use garlic for diarhhea in my kids. One of my grown sons stops in and takes a handful of the capsules when he needs it. He doesn't say anthing just opens the bottle and takes about 9 of them. This usually stops it in it's tracks.

The studies in Africa, dealing wih the children and diarrheal diseases, is most favorable. It is a known fact that most of the deaths in these areas are not due to the host disease, but rather its symptoms, if you will. Diarrhea kills more children, and adults alike, than the disease in and of itself. The work being done by teams of public health workers from USAID have shown this to be true. Zinc IS and will become over time a most welcome tool in dealing with diarrheal diseases.

re: Zinc Can Cure Diarrhea

Article says "It is unknown, however, exactly how zinc produces its anti-diarrheal effects".
I bet if it was a drug they would have poured millions into useless studies, but Zinc being a natural substance, like other natural products, they can't patent it, so not much money here, you definately won't find them.
As with anything else to much of a good thing is really worse for you, so exercise caution with Zinc, if you take to much you can become quite nauseous, believe me, i know from personal experience.

re: Zinc Can Cure Diarrhea

Zinc deficiencies are another common deficiency in our society. Perhaps the diarrhea would have been less likely to happen in the first place if nutritional and sanitation habits would have been better in the first place.

Corks work well also for diarrhea---Oops, did I really say that? Just one of those funky days folks..Sorry.
