I don't know if anyone remembers back a few years when the vaccine was "tainted" and mass innoculations did not occur, the number of cases dropped dramatically. The stats are right on the CDC's website that shows the year that mass innoculations did not occur flu dropped and the very next year when it was re-introduced the number of cases spiked back up.

My mother in law had her vaccine and she is still fighting the bug, but according to her it lessened the intensity....denial is not just a river in Egypt I guess.

Every year I watch in amazement as people get the cold and flu. Seems to happen around christmas time for us (Tropical country - Jamaica) I suspect it has something to do with the 3 degree drop around that time of the year. I rarely get a cold or the flu and I notice that if I DO get it - if i check back I've been going to bed at 2am for the past week or so. Going to bed early has me back on my feet in a day.

One of my remedies for the cold is to just bask in the sun for 20 minutes and I feel great - any sniffles clear right up. (I suppose this is only relevant for warmer countries ... sorry!)

I think the pharmaceutical companies are insane.

Islander: Thanks for your comment. I too have never had a flu shot and never had the flu, eat well and exercise and am rarely sick. I just have an honest interest in the science, and am curious to what extent I am "free riding" the actions of others. (As I know that others "free ride" my medical insurance premiums.)

Several comments refer to sleep and rest. Most of us say yes to getting enough sleep, especially hours before midnight-but it is often the first thing to go when we are TOO busy. 60 minutes did some research on sleep. Just 4 days on 4 hours of sleep caused a person to be prediabetic and other effects like brain function greatly impaired. If you can hear a rebroadcast of this study, it is very revealing.

ABout the vacines,I have been opposed to them for many years, but did have our 4 children vaccinated before I know of the dangers. clara

I work at the front desk of a large hotel and these past years we are required to have flu shots. The management says it's because we are in contact with many people every day. Well, I managed to get out so far and always say that I do not need any such "protection" as I do my own protection which is drinking a glass of FRESHLY MADE carrot juice every evening. Even if something comes up, I only skip one or two days a month. It is well worth the effort that BTW is minimal, it only takes a few minutes to make the carrot juice and clean up afterwards.

I used to catch cold regularly before, few times a year but once I started this carrot routine a few years ago, I was only sick once and that only happened because I went out running when there was an icy wind outside and my clothing was minimal. I was even asked by a woman who saw me that time if I was crazy or what. Yeah, I did catch cold then and since then adjust my wear according to the weather conditions :)

I can recommend the carrot routine to anybody and it takes almost nothing, minimal effort and cost. Best thing I did for my health so far.

I work in the healthcare field and have for 17 years. What the government is proposing is that the flu shot be made available to ALL as some people cannot afford the shot and some people cannot get to the free clinics where it is already being given to those who want it. The government isn't going to come to your door with a needle in hand and MAKE you take the shot - that will still be up to you. This year's shot, like many other years, only covered certain strains of the flu that were predicted to be giong around this year; unfortunately, scientists didn't nail it this year - some years it's a crap shoot. I eat healthy, exercise, do everything I'm supposed to do and I got the flu that was going around. My son is a competitive swimmer and eats the same as I do - we are not junk food junkies - and he got the stomach flu (gastroenteritis) so bad I had to take him into ER for rehydration. The little girl who unfortunately died in MN, died from complications of the flu - namely the staph. With my experience, she more than likely became septic and died, which can happen very quickly. I'm sure her mother didn't overdose her with Tylenol - even 2 children's Tylenol wouldn't have killed her if given properly, unless she was allergic. Some of this stuff gets so blown out of proportion and everyone starts ranting that if you eat this and eat that, you will never get the flu - well, it's a virus - and like cancer, you can be the healthiest person on earth and still get it. It's no one's fault, nothing that the mother did, nothing that the doctor's did or didn't do, that killed this unfortunate little girl. The thing the public needs to know is that the flu can kill you. Whether or not to get the shot is up to you. I don't use it myself and hadn't had the flu in 10 years, but this year it came a knockin and it knocked HARD. If you get it, PLEASE STAY HOME, KEEP YOUR KIDS HOME if they have it - even if it's for a week.

I drastically changed my diet several months ago to a much healthier diet. I also started walking and doing yoga. This year, I'm the only person I know who did not get the flu. Many people in my office got the flu shot (I work in public health - they believe this flu shot is vital to their health!) and I did not. When everyone else was out sick, I still felt great. I credit my diet, my exercise (though I do need more), and the yoga, which helps me deal with stress. I also eliminated as many harmful toxins from my house that I possibly could. I believe that helped also.

The immune system is an amazing thing if we just let it do its job!

DR. MERCOLA: PLEASE RESPOND

The medical literature supporting the effectiveness of flu vaccines with respect to the overall population is fairly comprehensive, wouldn't you agree?

Therefore, people who DON'T take flu shots because they DON'T get the flu are benefiting from the actions of others. A smaller incidence of the flu makes it less likely the flu will be contagious, regardless of one's personal health. You may have a strong immune system, but you will have reduced exposure to flu virus because others took the vaccine. Do you agree?

Are you honestly proposing that it would be the best heatlh policy to eliminate all flu shots? I see scant evidence for such a conclusion.

I don't know if you read your reader's comments, but I would honestly be curious to know your opinion on this topic.

When I finally became convinced that we live in a world of lies - many layers of clever lies, deceptions, half-truths, deliberate diversions - which often is called "marketing" and how pervasive it is, I got more motivated to find my own path. Just take off some of the blankets of lies, and the truth is there, right in front of us all the time.

David Hawkings, author of "Power vs Force" calibrates things using a form of muscle testing. O is the worst, 1000 is God. 200 is the beginning of integrity. Modern medicine, academia, fundamental religion all calibrate below 200.

While I don't exactly appreciate doctors, or big pharma,the folks I really can't stomach are spineless academicians, who suppress studies that would cost them money from drug companies, who fund studies that please big pharma, who hang on to tenure by enforcing the party line, who continue to teach lies, even when they know they are lies, and many of them do know this. These people bear a greater responsibility, they are supposed to be "more educated" ie know more about truth. No, they know less. They spend their careers avoiding simple painful truths, and they spread their heart and soul rot to their students. "These bloodless pedants smell unduly of the lamp" as one great sage once said. THAT should be the motto hanging over the University gates. And, parents PAY for their kids to go to these places?

The Vaers reporting system showed 203 deaths from the flu vaccine for 2007. The CDC estimates that only 10% of reactions are reported. That would mean over 2,000 people a year die from the flu vaccine, more than die from the flu. below are the 2007 reports

• 203 deaths

• 797 life-threatening events

• 260 permanent disabilities

• 2,980 hospitalizations

• 405 prolonged hospitalizations (moving to a nursing or rehab facility)

I choose not to give my kids the flu vaccine, because they don't get sick (very rarely). I'm glad we all have the choice though. Don't believe every thing Mercola says about vaccines. My husband got tired of me saying vaccines were bad and showed me several sights ( sights that don't sell anything and have nothing to gain) that showed how vaccines have improved health of society overall. I also learned that some Amish do vaccinate their children and they have the exact same rate of autism as the ones that don't. Both groups are lower in one type of autism. I realize some children may have a adverse reaction, but that same child may be more likely to die from the disease itself. I had a friend that had a daughter that got whopping cough (because she wasn't vaccinated) and she spent 3 weeks in the hospital. She came close to dieing several times and what a big bill they had.

Government officials have to push drugs and vaccines to keep their jobs, because it's big pharma who pays for political campaigns and nobody in the land can get elected to office without big money from big pharma. The term "democracy" is a farse. The correct name is PLUTOCRACY or alternately, pharmacracy.
