One of my sons was diagnosed with ADHD and mild Asbergers . Anyway after 3 years of him being on a Ritalin type drug supplied by the National Health service here in the UK I decided to completely change the family diet and we started to cook everything from basic natural materials. (no factory made or factory processed food apart from salt ,sugar , milk , brown bread and butter ) . I did this because I suspected the cocktail of food additives in UK food was causing the problems. .

All the symptoms of these two " illnesses " disappeared and never returned. That was three years

ago.

My other son had bad Asthma and this problem also went away and never came back.

I myself had been affected with Tinnitus for 10 years which I thought was incurable.

The Tinnitus also disappeared as well and never returned.

I do not know how the people who make the rubbish /additives found in factory -made -food sleep at night or handle their consciences

Okay, seriously - I have been an avid gardener for years. I love getting into the dirt, barehanded, etc. I get my hands and face covered in mud and dirt each week, cannot be helped - yet my autoimmune condition started long ago, and is steadily increasingly worse as the years go by. It was probably the amalgams placed in my mouth as a teenager, not my "clean living" that did this. Oh yes, I also helped my mother with her garden as I was growing up. As kids my friends and I always played in the dirt, sand, or whatever was available at the time. This has always been my lifestyle. I refuse to believe this article entirely. While I basically agree we should not raise our children in sterile environments, and playing in the dirt cand and does seem to straighten the mind out. There is something therapeutic about it. Seriously, sterile living isn't the full explanation of autoimmune conditions. Heavy metals are probably more the cause, and the main cause, certainly.

My daughter received a broad spectrum antibiotic right after she was born.....no vaccinations given. She is now 6yrs old and suffering from eczema.

Antibiotics are the scourge on mankinds health....but has been a windfalll financially for 'The Medical Industrial Complex' -providing an endless supply of sick patients. The solution for health is probiotics....'for life'...not 'against'.

Good article.

There is lots of evidence "out there" that exposure to common "pathogens" in childhood can be highly beneficial.

One HUGE source of allergy formation was not mentioned, however.

Vaccines> Vaccines are introduced into the body via injections, in the main.This bypasses the T1 immune system (gut flora and enterocytes etc) which is over 70% of the body's immune system!

The T2 system (blood borne immune system) is moreover ,hyperactivated by unatural invasions of multiple pathogens in one "dose".This leads to immune overeaction-ie anaphylaxis instead of prophylaxis.

Added to this unfortunate effect of vaccines is their skewing of "childhood illnesses" (such as measles, mumps. chickenpox etc) into teen or adult illnesses.

Putting aside the controversial question of measles as a "kickstarter" for development of the brain (owing to its close similarity to neurons in protein structure) this means those diseases now mainly occur at a point in development (sexual maturity for Mumps eg) when they are far more dangerous in side effects.

After 4 years of research and remediation of my youngest son's autism and eldest daughter's CFS I know, without any doubt ,that vaccines were the major contributing factor to both.

Dr Robyn Cosford ,1st class Honours Medicine Sydney University ,(MIndd Foundation Lecture 2006, Sydney) has a paper on this very subject and convinced me ,along with my previous and later research (eg Drs Ayoub, Horowitz, Schreibner, Stephanie Cave ,Archie kalakerinos,Sherri Tenpenny et al).

Even the CDC's own freedom of information papers admit the incidence of asthma is 5-6 times more likely if a child is fully vaccinated .......................look no further than eliminating vaccines and allergies would be greatly reduced.

Wonderful site Dr.Mercola.I am a teacher in a local school Dist and I am amazed at the stupidity of the nurse which lines up all the students at lunchtime and administers an actibacterial squirt of some known solution in the attempt to control the germ population.I hope nobody lites amatch.The flu report that we receive monthly hasn't had any reductions in the flu itself.Some suggest that this is better than notihing.seems soap and water might take too long to use.Help............................

I am a big fan of your work and a regular newsletter reader. I am surpirsed that you did not bring up the role of vitamin D in atopic disease.

Ironically, last week I attended the 2008 annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). I was there as an exhibitor, but I was able to sit in on several educational sessions.

The topic of one interesting session was: Vitamin D: Shedding LIght on Atopic Disease and Immunity.

There was no mention of allergies caused from starting a child on adult foods and medicine too early. Doctors will tell you that feeding a baby adult food too early can cause food allergies. A baby is supposed to have mother's milk. They have known for several years that babies that were fed Formula were more likely to develop food allergies (especially soy and peanut allergies) than babies fed mother's milk. The allergen found in peanuts is also found in soybeans. A recent statistic showed that babies who had their diaper rash treated with products like Destin while being fed Formula were even more likely to develop peanut/soy allergies. The theory is that the baby's body is already in a hyper immune response mode when he/she develops diaper rash (especially if an infection develops). The ingredients in Destin absorb into the inflamed tissues and the body mistakes this as the cause of the inflammation. This causes a severe autoimmune response to anything containing soy. Soy extracts are used in Destin and most of the OTC skin treatments including lotion. Peanuts have a much higher concentration of the allergen that is found in soybeans. The study found that the child or adult that was fed Formula and treated with Destin as a baby was more likely to develop allergies to peanuts and soy. In many cases, the allergies don't show up until later in life. Many of them develop other autoimmune problems such as asthma. They also noted that there seamed to be an increased incident of allergies among babies that wore disposable diapers. There was no evidence to support a direct cause and effect between the disposable diapers and allergies. They concluded that the babies that wore disposable diapers were more likely to get diaper rash than babies that wore cloth diapers. More diaper rash would mean more diaper rash medications like Destin.

Hi: My son is now 14 y. By mistake, then his new Dr. overlook the immunizations and repeated them (I did not know much English but I remember that they said that there is no problem). Since then (two month old) he developed eczma, eating and sleeping problems (of course growth delay too). When he was 5 Y I started to look for alternatives. Nothing helped. We tried homeopath, acupuncture, chiropractic, macromolecular medicine, reflexology, detox. He is now clean form aluminum and lead which was found in high level in his heir but the situation did not change. He never got a full night sleep in his life except when he was on prescription medication which I refuse to put them in his body anymore. Food is like poison. It is true that I was over higienic. I buy organic more than 50%. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. A (desperate mother).

Forgive me if I missed it, but nowhere in the article or comments did I see anything about breastfeeding. Studies have shown that breastfeeding for at least the first six months of life greatly reduces allergies in children. Given that breast milk contains beneficial bacteria and antibodies, I'd bet anything that it has a protective effect against autoimmune diseases as well. The decline in breastfeeding over the last century or so and the rise of artificial formulas -- especially those with soy -- is almost certain to be a big factor in the health crises we are having. I have even heard that breastfed babies are less likely to be overweight as adults.

My own experiences lead me to suspect that some allergies are caused by unrecognized infections. Infections that often thrive on poor diet and life styles. In my case this is almost certainly fungal, and very difficult to remove once established. As the disease agent has been gradually removed from my body, so allergies have gone.

My fight has been multifaceted. However, the spice turmeric, completely cleared my, almost life long, asthma. It appears that irritation caused by an infection can lead to additional sensitivities to other allergens.

I get a newsletter on natural health, and this week the big discussion was about companies marketing personal hygene products like body wash, shampoo, and skin lotions with 1, 4 dioxane a cancer causing petro based agent. The real bad news was these companies marketed their products as "Organic," or "natural." Some of these companies like Jason Products, were once owned by family concerns, and at first used natural ingredents. The company was later bought by these greedy companies, like Lever, Pamolive, or Proter & Gamble, to name a few and the formulas were changed. So now there is no telling what is in the so called natural toothpaste, or body wash, or lotion. Likely contributing to the destruction of our immune systems. Not to mention bad air, and bad water, and not so safe foods, and from God knows where.

If you want to know what you are putting on your body for the purpose of hygene, go to www.organicconsumers.org, and take a look at who failed, and who passed. Find which products you should aviod, and how bogus that label "organic" can be when there is a dollar involved. Some say conspiracy with a deliberate intention to make us ill, or just a plain lack of human conern.

Read America, research what you read, and get an understanding for yourself. As it now stands, trust no one with your health, and that of your family.
