I've always liked vegetables and meat and can easily ignore all the chip, and sugary drink sections in the supermarket. It's your choice that you make, now that we all have the info on how to eat healthier, you'd better think twice before buying those condiments. You are what you eat! I'm eating raw!

If these kids are active and growing, there is no question in my mind that they will be hungry about every 3 hours. What an excellent opportunity to get good healthy vegetables and fruits into their diet! If we have foods that are good for them readily available whenever they're hungry, they'll grow up making healthier food choices on their own. And, they'll be less likely to hang out at the homes of their friends and eat the "junk" that's available at those homes.

The (implied) conclusion is there IS some in there! But we should not have to be a forensic scientist to decipher a label! There are so many "names" for msg, even the owner of our local healthfood store did not know. I took in a list,so he does now.

As for the cost issue for organic products, it is real & valid. Sadly it has gotten to the point that only wealthy people can afford to buy the "good food"! No,i don`t smoke, drink or have any other vices, just trying to feed my family & pay my bills,so cain`t cut costs there. At this point my budget is on a budget.

Organic stuff in English supermarkets tends to be the store's own brand, Green & Black's for a few things (at least before Cadbury-Schweppes bought them up) and let's not forget the enormously expensive Duchy Originals, which is owned by our very own Prince Charles - himself a loud advocate for real food. Though in this case I think he just wants the money.

Also there have been recent articles about 1, 4 dioxane being in what we think is organic skin, and body care products. Please see www.organicconsumersassociation.org for a full list.

Healthy eating is under attack, and we have to be vigilant, read labels, and take the

Government's word for nothing. Look for the USDA seal, but also look for a secondary seal as well. Once you find that second seal, Google said certificate, and make sure of what you are getting.

Unfortunately, the Government has stuck it's nose into things and and all organics must have the USDA seal. Again if you want more information, go to www.organicconsumerassociation.org.

I complained to the store manager who explained that by using the same suppliers as Whole Foods, they were able to provide better prices (though the Horizon brand is 20% higher in cost than the locally produced brand). I resent the lack of CHOICE that occurs when these brands that were at one time, small independent companies with a real concern for the quality of the product are gobbled up by these huge corporations where the profit motive is preeminent.

For example, reading food labels is difficult for most people and if you don't know what to beware of you can fall for the "organic" on the label. How many mothers (with children at their side) in the grocery have or take the time to REALLY read the labels? Not many. We must educate everyone or make the labels simpler. Another problem is the time to shop for the locally grown foods. Not many mothers (and let's face it-they do most of the food shopping!) have the time to find locally grown foods. A co-op of those seeking locally grown foods would be a start in the right direction. A weekly meeting with education and discussions of what was available and what was needed/wanted and then appointing pick-up people and delivery points where all could meet to retrieve their locally grown foods for the week. Everyone could take part in the pick-up and this would even out the costs for everyone. If there were enough of these co-ops for locally grown foods it would support the local farmers, too. If the co-op grows too big for one person to do the pick-up then split the co-op and keep each other posted on what you find locally. Some of those getting raw milk from local farmers share pick-ups this way and it works well. I see no reason it wouldn't work for other products. Someone mentioned cooking from scratch, which is difficult if you are time pressed. There are lots of businesses springing up that cook your food for your family for a week and deliver it ready to re-heat in the oven/microwave. But this leaves out those who can ill afford the extra cost for preparing the food. A co-op cooking session for those with access to a large kitchen facility might be the answer there, too. If a play area were available it would also allow socializing for the kids while mothers cooked. I think the answer, in general, is that we all help each other more.
