If you think the drug reps are bad just look at the surgeons. Take it from an orthopedic medical device sales reps. 84% of the orthopedic surgeons nation wide are on one of the major companies side payrolls for implants. This was noted at the orthopedic convention just last year. This also goes for cardiovasular medical companies as well. They are the worst like Medtronic and St. Jude Medical.

Take this concept one step further to realize your friendly pharmacist is also detailed by drug reps so when you ask him/her for a recommendation on what to use to cure your athlete's foot, you will likely be pointed to the brand name that matches the brand name on the post-its on the counter or the brand name on the ink pen in the pharmacist's hand. Or, it icould be the pharmacy clerk who points you to the "best" product. The clerk probably has a few neat little gadgets bearing that same brand name.

The pharmaceudical companies use nurses they wine and dine, to pressure doctors also into using certain drugs. The nurses and nursing schools are not given the luxurious incentives that MD's are but they are given lunches and dinners at good restaurants and are frequently met by reps so that a relationship can be formed. They also are given pens and other little goodies, like cups that lie about with the names of the drugs all over them as reminders that this drug exists. It is all very clever!!

I'd LOVE to get off of my medication, but I have epilepsy. I'm 49 now and havenot had a seizure in 21 years. How can I get off of the Depakote? I currently take 500mg in the AM and 250 in the PM.

By the way I'm a Registered Nurse and agree with your opinions of big pharma and medicine in general. It's all about the money. So many stories...

I am a landed immigrant in Canada. I am now pursuing my career as a nutritionist, but in the country where I came from (I) I was a dentist. I used to work in a big hospital and I confirm what the drug sales rep. told us happened in the country I mentioned (I). So it is a global problem, eh? I must admit that I used to enjoy being spoiled by big pharma personally or collectively together with my colleagues. One example:to have hospital anniversary party, we just called those big pharmas and other suppliers such as companies that supply x-ray film, or food for hospital kitchen, and they would be more than happy to pour their money as long as we commit to use their product, including their drugs. Can you see who pay all these expanses? The patients of course, as they are the end consumer of the products supplied by those companies. Oh God please forgive me.

I work as a nurse for a big practice in one of the poorest cities in America. Drug reps come in every day and lunch , samples, happy hours and other perks are just the norm . Last week I brought in a paper on Gardisil printed out from Dr. M site and gave it to the Nurse practitioners. They at least seem more open to seeing another viewpoint. I get the feeling that the Drs are not sure how to take me and they are certainly not willing to discuss these things with me. I have already told them that i won't be giving that injection. I also do not eat the food brought in by the reps or go to their happy hours. I do some times get a chance to talk to patients about getting healthy with some of the things Dr M talks about but ifeel that i have to do it quietly. Everything said about the drug industry is true but we only get what we ask for.We must start to think for ourselves and get educated.

Ray Salomone writing: I am a personal trainer and I spend much of my day walking from client to client along 5th, Madison and Park Avenues in New York City. It is here, on a daily basis that I see these pharma reps up close as they also move from client to client. As said in posts above, they all look like cheerleaders or quaterbacks. I see and overhear them in coffee shops as they prepare for their appointments, talking to their managers on the phone, working themselves up into a frenzy of excitement. It is sad to see that these kids (they are almost all under 30) are responsible for pushing so much medication down the throats of the general public.

Some (certainly not all) of the methods these sales people are using are quite innocent and a good way to conduct business. E.g., there nothing wrong with taking a client out to lunch, or being friendly with them. That's just good salesmanship.

The real issue, I think, is that this the place for salesmanship. Doctors should be influenced by other doctors and researchers as to what drugs or treatment to provide their patients. If I'm putting my patients health and lives at stake, I would want to get my information from an independent source. Especially, when the companies providing the drugs have such a notorious background.

All I see on tv anymore are ads for hospital and drug ads. It's blatantly obvious they are profiting due to the amount of advertising they can afford and the timeslots they are paying to advertise. I even see drug advertisements on the Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. That's friggin' sick and wrong.

It's time for the average consumer to becoming wiser than their doctors in order to resist this bombardment of advertising (or should I say...brainwashing).

Dr. Mercola: Shame on you! This is pure sensationalism and it makes me wonder what other of your information is so blown out of proportion! Do you not think any of our other major industries (i.e. oil, beef, dairy, poultry,farming, you name it) has its' outlandish promotions. And I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 10 years and my husband has worked in the industry for the last 8 years...I can assure you none of what this man says is the case for any company I know of these days,nor was it the case when I worked in the industry 15 years ago...and I worked in sales training. I know there are always horror stories with any given topic, pharmaceutical sales included. Also, let's give doctors the benefit of the doubt...I do believe the majority care about their patients more than they care about funding their swimming pools. I also know there are MANY people that have been helped by a pharmaceutical drug. Possibly even saved from death...so let's present both sides of the story and not just bash something for the sake of commercialism. Not all people are helped by "natural supplements" either. Have you presented the facts on whole food healing?...not just offering a "supplement" that you just happen to have the best of? You should present the facts on whole foods....but you can't "sell" that can you? People should know that the best remedy for any situation is responsibility...people need to step up to the plate and take it! That means changing their diets and not just looking for the "pill" to take, pharmaceutically or 'naturally" derived. The best medicine is not medicine at all...it is natural, whole foods and herbs taken in the right amounts and the right combinations.

After losing my fiance to prescribed Methadone while in a hospital, I have come to learn that Methadone is the #2 Killer Drug in the US killing over 4600 people in 2005. After people started to die from OxyContin and physicians became leary of prescribing it...the pharmaceutical makers of methadone started to aggressively promote Methadone for pain management...since this time Methadone deaths have risen to epidemic proportions. Methadone clinics have loosed regulations and allow more take homes of this drug as more people turn to clinics for addictions to prescription opioids.

This maddness must stop!!
