Step 1) Tell you happiness is genetic

Step 2) Prescribe a drug to counter this genetic 'defect'

Step 3 ) Cash in from people who buy the drug just so they don't have to take responsibility for their lives.

There is a weird law of the Universe that seems to return to one more than one originally gave. It usually comes from other sources than the givee, but the giver most definitely comes out ahead in most instances. Especially when the giver doesn't expect anything in return, but is just being himself or herself.

Yup, I'd say that was a proveable theory. But don't take my word for it...

The fact that American is the world economic leader (for now) is not the main concern over taxes; especially the Federal Income Tax. America reached the top because it's citizens were free to pursue their dreams of success with minimal governmental intrusion. Free market capiatlism instilled by the country's Founders, made it possible for Americans to optimally pursue those dreams to each individuals highest potential. Since the the inception (and enforcement) of the Federal Income Tax, entraprenurial pursuit has continually suffered growing pressure. The huge amount of productive time alone, consumed by income tax preparation, accounting, and legal issues is a major factor in the cost of goods and services produced. The huge increase in the size and power of government, made possible by the existance and perpetual increase in taxation now threatens Americas economic prowess. The Federal Reserve (a concept of central planning, ie socialism) was brought to power through the manipulation of a govenment seeking optimal control. That same Federal Reserve (a private corporation) was given the power to print currency, and become a lender to the government. A huge portion of the income tax revenue goes to paying the interest collected by the Federal Reserve for funding the nearly out-of-control growth of the government. Consequently the economy suffers, the dollar declines and each American losses liberties, and the value of their labor.

America's reaching the top was the easy part. Sustaining that position will be the tough part; particularly with today's international competition. Those non-vigilant, with the attitude, "hey who cares, we're still way better off than 99% of the world", will soon find themselves in economic slavery.THERE IS NO LAW MANDATING A FEDERAL INCOME TAX.

For economics read: "The Road to Serfdom" by FA Hayek and "Against Leviathan" by Robert Higgs

For developing you own happiness read "Psycho-Cybernitcs" by Maxwell Maltz

I see that here a lot of people just dump on the website rather than logically follow the discussion. Of course that is OK, you just need to recognise that. For sure, for sure, people happiness CANNOT be just chosen. Beleive me, my brother is in a very bad way, I have seen the pain that Lady Pam and others are going through first hand. It is not that simple. And my heart goes out to all of you who feel those dark dark days where everything is impossible. As someone who genuinely doesnt experience such extreme lows I have little to say "big hug" and except hang in there.

However, perhaps of interest, is the fact that in a new job, I found myself VERY frazzled and in a parallel motion found the (free!) book on www.jonbarron.org, read it and thought that I would try his reccommendation of taking extra Omega 3s in the form of flaxseed. Note that I was taking it for general health reasons not really for mental health. However, I almost instantly (say 48 hours) felt a "smoothing out" of the edges and much more like 'old' (pre-new job) self. I promptly Googled the effects of flaxseed on mood and found that it is allegedly good for depression. Please note that it really seems to be only good for mild depression, long term wise. BUT; the rest of the book makes a lot of sense to me and I am now trying the colon detox (yes, yes, he has products he endorses but genuinely I dont beleive he is suggesting you buy his products; he tells you everything you need, ingredient-wise to shop around); anyway, long story short: please read the book guys and maybe consider the detox. I cannot tell you genuinely how good I feel already on it, after only one week (takes 30 days). I know I am not in the same place as many of the posters, but maybe reading a free book is not so bad. And Lady Pam, please hang in there really, there is hope, I know it.

Oh, oh, is that an oxymoron? Have suffered severe tinnitus four decades, plus. If you care to look, watch for, 'nod and smile', the anchor for all legally deaf types. Younger years had to do it. Let's call it my duty to proliferation of the species. More vernacular terms do exist. All goes well until some 'smart apple' (almost like he knows), addresses you directly and says 'What do you think'? You have been 'smiling and nodding' and have no idea what was being discussed. Oddly this 'jerk' spoke loudly enough for you to here. this time. Had he asked previously? You will not 'hear' much from this group. Two 'studies' I managed to locate place their self-destruction rate a smidgen below seventy-five percent. Two 'legals' and 'six significant others'. Not fair to ask any woman to live with this, let alone me. Take care. Skoal.

You may not be 100% successful in your attempts at happiness(I refer to your first post). But if there is one thing that I admire it's a "try-er". You are more likely to achieve happiness long term and I'll bet in 10/20 years time your kids will appreciate all that you have done for them. Mind you then they will probobly bring loads of grandchildren at the weekends for you to try and feed.

We are being treated as if we are machines and can be manipulated at will! I think it's time to turn the spotlight on these so-called brilliant scientists that are making are lives worse everyday!

Since when did happiness occur on a gene??? Since when did I loose control over my own destiny to shape my own happiness??? This is REALLY worrisome, what direction are we headed in as a people with this kind of crap! I read another study the other day that just made me laugh, it read "Nice guys finish first", and talked about how research has shown that being nice to the people around you is actually to your benefit....... ARE U Fing KIDDING ME???? Oh reallly we needed to spend millions of tax payers dollars to tell us that.... absoultely craaaaaaaaaazy!!! The crazyer thing is people who actually may have been enlightened by that story, "hmm oh ok i'll be kind now and respect my neighbor..."

Thank you for lettting me vent, I will be fine now!!! :)

I hate being hypocritical and paying someone compliments just to get them to like me is manipulative. I know most people do it, anyway. People who most find very charming, well... charm is learned, it is never natural, therefore anyone who is habitually charming is not someone you should ever trust, but so many fall for it.

Being honest? When I know people have deliberately lied to me, made things up, blackened me behind my back, etc., should I be honest and say I know they've done it and I resent it? Well yes, if I want to live my life in solitary confinement - I can't find anyone who does NOT do these things! (with less than a handful of exceptions). So I don't say anything. I just smile at their insincere compliments and try to lead by example.
