Thank you for this article. Recently, my husband would wake up in the night out of his sleep in a state of confusion and stroke-like symptoms. He is a diabetic and on the meds Glipizide and metformin. After several episodes of this happening to him and twice taking him thru emergency, they kept him in the hospital for several days and ran tests on him.....nothing, they could not find out what was causing this stroke to happen and they sent hin home. What I did was researched all his meds on the internet and the side-effects. After careful study at home, I was able to determine just by not giving this to him that the medicine that was making this happen was the metformin. Once he stopped taking it, he returned to his normal self within 2 days. I asked the doctors could it had been the medicine at first but, they dismissesd that theory quickly. but, it was the side effects of that medicine that brought those symptoms on. He has since stopped taking that prescription drug. Always ask, and if your are not satisfied with the answer, research it for yourself!!

I could add a long list of severe damage that three tiny tablets did to me. Sufficient to say that the brain and visual damage has taken over a decade to heal. The financial and social costs are enormous.

I agree that using more natural methods is the best way to go, but if you can't find something that works prescription medicine does have it's place. Bipolar is a serious brain disease that has some very serious side effects if not treated. I have tried many things before I consigned myself to taking medicine for the rest of my life. I am grateful for the researchers because they have given me my life back. It is horrible to spend 16 hours a day in bed, especially when you have children to care for. I have been in near psychotic and comatose states and it got worse the older I got. By the way, I am healthy otherwise. I eat healthy food, have never put alcohol, tobacco or drugs into my body and have a supportive family. But the evidence is overwhelming that our family has a genetic form of bipolar, so many have the disease. No more suicide attempts, living a productive life, having a clear head are worth it. I 'd rather take medicine and live 60 good years than not take medicine and live 100 bad. There is a place for prescriptions medicines.

My mom was recently diagnosed with cancer. Yes she has pain, but her Dr. gave her oxycontin-morphine. What a quack. The instructions say that if you perforate the coating in the pill that death may result. Is this Dr. trying to kill off my mom so that she cant sue for not finding the cancer 4 years ago when she first started having the pain? Its a possability. My mom called her back and asked for something a little less shall we say extreme... The Dr. (I use the term sarcastically,) told her that that was the only pain medicine that she could give her. (sorry spelling is not my talent.) Thank the lord that she is now going to another Dr.

I recently joined, this month (Apr 08). I was unable to get involved with most of these ideas because I worked for a large medical institution as a medical transcriptionist and had done so for 25 years. But, last year I retired and was no longer associated with the institution and was now free to do whatever I wanted. But, while working for that institution, I noticed that many patients would come in with a large quantity of meds they were taking and I thought to myself many times, they must be having side-effects of all that medication. But, I kept this info to myself, as even my own doctor(s) seemed to be blinded by the info they were getting from the large pharmaceutical giants. Since retiring, I now have basically 4 different alternative doctors giving me advice and find that Dr. Mercola has given me more good data than any of the rest. I have been practicing what I have learned from studying alternative data for the past 10 years by telling my PCP's and PMD's that no I was not going to take their recommended meds because of the terrible side effects, even though they tried to insist on their drugs, and I have suffered many side effects from them and stopped them, when I finally figured out what was happening. My wife was taking Lipitor and complained all the time of muscle weakness and pain. I had read an article that statin drugs were not found to be helpful for any female patients in the U.S. and finally got her to stop. Her pain and weakness went away almost immediately.

Tell me about it. Two and a half years ago I got symptoms of a UTI...in a brand new relationshhip then, and painfully naive, I instantly ran to the UCLA medical clinic which was my HMO. Voila! They took a test, considered my symptoms and prescribed me Cipro - a week of it. The joke was that the test results came back in and there was no UTI. They never called me to let me know. I should have just sued them, in retrospect, you know, but whatever. It must have been a yeast infection masquerading as a UTI. I was being a good girl..I took all the pills, although they made me feel dizzy and like I was stoned...not in a nice way.

Two days after the week of pills my symptoms came back.

Then a week later I got mouth thrush.

It is two and a half years later now - will be three years in July, and I am just now getting to who I was before Cipro. I developed food allergies I never had before. I think I am borderline celiac...or at least, if I kept eating bread and sugar, I would become one. Needless to say, I don't..

Let's put it this way.. in a way, this was a blessing in disguise.. I felt so miserable, depressed, my digestion was so bad compared to before and I got so many UTIs, that it drove me to become a borderline naturopath.,, discover Dr. Mercola.. and become an independent thinker, able to take care of myself - my health - and of those close to me. I got my boyfriend, who is 45, to a point where his moderate to severe sleep apnea is reduced to mild or next to none (all food allergies, as well). I helped my mom. I have become a source of info for a lot of people I know. So I can't really complain.

But.. I'll never forget how they refused to take responsibility. How they denied that the side effects had to do with Cipro and gave me an antifungal rinse which didn't do squat. I went to a store, bought some Neem, gargled it and in two days my painful thrush was gone. And they refused to hear about it.

It all started over 100 years ago when the Pure Food Act of 1906 was torpedoed by - GUESS WHO - food and liquor manufacturers looking to falsely label products and sneak additives and preservatives into food. Even after Dr. Wiley proved these to be unsafe, the business interests got to the politicians, including Teddy Roosevelt, and the erosion began. Next came medicine, agriculture, cosmetics, the list goes on. Something on the level of Enron needs to happen to these people. A huge fall, a major collapse, jail time, public disgrace.

I have very healthy children....some say it is just luck..... I say from good common sense, nutrition, and sunshine right from the start. So, up until my at the time 12 year old daughter had never even had as much as a tylenol in her life. Then she got lymes disease and was perscribed Doxicycline. I saw problems within two days but the doctor refused to see her and blew it off as viral symptoms going around. Finally, after four attemps to get him to see her, I took her somewhere else and forced them to see her. She had severe vomiting, dizzyness, body pain and espesially headache. I even had to take her to the bathroom. She couldn't walk by herself, she was grey in color. Long story short, the medication caused a suedo tumor which means swelling and fluid build-up in her spinal cord and brain. They told me another three days might have killed her. Final analysis, she will have some sort of reaction with most medications because she was not trained on them when she was small. She even had to take benedryl to counteract the hives, eye irritation, and shortness of breath from the amoxycilin she ended up taking for the original lymes disease. It took her 6 months to get her functional again and another 6 to finally get her back to normal.

My question is, with lymes disease and other such things on the rise where I thought antibiotics would be called for, what could I have done differently? I have other children and if this happens to them they might have the same reaction. The other scary thing I was told to do was to put two types of bug sprays on them with a very high deet level in it! One of them can't even be put on there skin I was told to put it on there clothing! It starts with a P. I'll look it up next time I'm in walmart in the hunting section and blog it in asap if anyone is interested.

I was on the contraceptive pill Microgynon 30 and it made me suicidal within three weeks of taking it. I had just about every side effect listed, including cramps, severely itchy skin, headaches, blood-pressure problems, massive depression, bleeding, mood swings... you name it I had it. I went to the doctor to see if he'd prescribe me something else, and he wanted to put me on SSRIs!! That was when I stopped, thought 'What am I doing to myself?!' and stopped taking them altogether.

Much, much better off without the pill.

I'd never go on anything that effects my hormones again; that was just hell.

Already we know Doctors are the third leading cause of death in America, and I guess Prescription Drugs play a very big part. I read somewhere that the Osteoporosis drug actually makes the facial bones rot away. If there is anyone out there who has more information as to which one, or ones, feel free to comment.

I am 90 years old I was born in 1918). Your Profile page only goes to 1920! I take no prescription medications nor do I need any. I still have all my original parts. But, alas, I have a pacemaker to help my ticker. Sorry about that. I have been taking supplements since 1952. I try staying abreast with up-to-date information on nutrition and supplements. My biggest fear is landing in a hospital and hearing a doctor tell me to get rid of all those supplements.

Thanks Wellnessmom, I will pass the info onto my daughter about laundry products. I do know that she used the Arm & Hammer laundry detergent.

Taffie, I will suggest the dairy issue with her. He has allergies to pollens, grass, pet dander, dust, and it seems there aren't many foods involved, but I will still pass on about the dairy.

By the way, my grandson is 11 1/2 years old.
