I cringe when I hear about an autistic child being "cured". A genetic defect cannot be cured right now. Evan was obviously misdiagnosed. Metal toxicity has the same symptoms as autism. All of the above apply to metal toxicity, which I would test 1st before accepting the diagnosis of autism. But, real autism is not curable, although the symptoms can be mitigated. We've learned in the past few years that my brother, born in 1954, is on the spectrum. Autism would also explain my father's behavor (born in 1926). Without diagnosis or treatment, my brother has managed to support his wife and 4 now-grown kids. But his life, and the lives of everyone around him would have been much happier if we had known then what we know now. Parents-do try the above, but know that autism is not the end of the world, even if it is not "cured".

Hi. My mom has a cellphone, I live in Madison Ohio around Lake Erie. We do not carry raw milk at WalMart apparently. I'll probably have to go to rawmilk.com. I know MSG can bother me. Yes. Seems pretty much like: whatever could cause Celiac Disease, Asperger's Syndrome and others as well. I'm doing my best to help support the world by means of PETA and living almost vegetarian for the day. I, nowadays, have Lactaid Milk. The only milk I can buy in assuring I can digest it. Only a couple times a year do I ever have anything with aspartame in it as well. I take Benadryl to try to help me sleep now, and sometimes, Melatonin. Not all Melatonin is created the same though I see, both by effectiveness, ingredients and others. I heard one girl on Yahoo Answers once say she took 50mgs of Benadryl at night with 17mgs of Melatonin. Boy, she wasn't even smart, and asked if it was okay, along with 2 other medications she'd take at night, but for another problem. Maybe bipolar disorder. I don't go out in the sun much time wise, but I feel like I do, my skin sometimes turning pink and dry as well. I exfoliate year-round. I try to use what I think is natural or good, like Revive or aloe or something. I don't use terrible shampoos or anything, actually. Everything I buy around here, must be as effective or gentle as Suave, or you won't see me buy it. It may not be perfect, with DMDM Hydantoin and Methylchloroisothiazolinone in it, but it's pretty good. Hardly ever eat true butter either. Just in macaroni & cheese at times, so I get the flavor I want. I now even know what artificial flavors are. Unless they're like popsicles, it's nothing but some white medicine I hear that reduces calories or lightens flavors. Sure, there's like artificial butter flavor for popcorn, but it's not always this clear what you're getting, like dicetyl. I know.

First I must correct a HUGE inaccuracy - Jim Carrey is not Jenny McCarthy's son's father. It is misleading right from the start. I also have several concerns regarding her publishings. I'd love to know if any other the royalties she is making from her many autism publishings is being put back into the community to help other famlies who are less fortunate or put towards providing more services for an already overwhelmed society. Waiting lists can stretch to over two years for settings that are proven to help these kids. I myself VOLUNTEER as an educational advocate. I am also a parent of a son with autism - 17 years old. She is not saying anything many of us "pioneer parents" haven't been saying for years. We appreciate her voice in our quest to open this country's eyes and help our children - but it's a slap in our faces for her to prosper over it. Research and information is at our fingertips today with computers - it wasn't that way when my son was diagnosed. We still hollered out the same information, but we spent YEARS gathering it as well. I will give her credit for speaking LOUD, as she is afforded the public persona to make a difference - but it does not diminish the many of us who have carried this same message for the last 15 years! Thanks for the opportunity to be heard!

I'm interested to know if anyone has tried Dr. Klinghardt's protocol for ASD? He's one of Dr. Mercola's faves and a long time expert in hg chelation among other things.

Interesting how Alzheimer's is soaring as well. Mercury and aluminum from flu and other vaccines are routinely given to older adults (the vaccine schedule for seniors has been ramped up just as children's have) in addition to the burden from a mouth full of heavy metals and root canals that many older Americans have, toxic aluminum overload from antacids, deodorant, water, and cookware, hg pollution from coal burning, fluoride toxicity.....are these players in this scary epidemic??

I would think one of the best things for a gut disorder is colostrum, ive tried many different brands of colostrum as i had leaky gut within a week of taking colostrum i was able to drink protein drinks again because at a time leaky gut started i could no longer drink a protein drink without a severe headache for 2 hrs afterwards , upon a week of taking colostrum it stopped and had othr good things happen , if i knew somebody with intestinal disorders I would start them on a good quality first milkiing colostrum

Jenny's beautiful son, Evan, was fathered by her ex-husband John Asher. Jim Carrey may be a big part of Evan's life, but he is not his father. Unfortunately such a glaring error make make a reader wonder what other information is being reported in the same sloppy fashion... Not something I generally associate with Dr. Mercola's website...

To test for metals, the child or person would have to do one round of chelation - the method to release the metals- then have a urine test. s test straight out without this challenge does not work - the organs are holding the metals - they won't show up in a test without a challenge. This is wonderful news. Again doctors have been shown that if one looks one can find solutions outside of "poisin, and cut." I know the drug industry is not too happy with these results, but the outcome is something which be should be exaimed more closely. These vaccines are injurious to health of our children, carry with them all manners of toxins, which has to be removed. I have heard of people using Chelation Therapy, Colon Cleanses, and a dramatic change in the diet as a means of removing toxins from ones body. Beware though the Quacks down at "Quack Watch" say there is no reason to cleanse one's liver of toxins, and that these proceedures are a means of taking advantage of the ill.

We also need to be aware of the negative effects these giant utility towers which carry power lines have on one's health. Some have attributed some of the blame for Autism, to these towers. Along with cell phones, and cell phone towers, and of course cordless phones. Studies indicate some of the same procedures can be used to successfully treat ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

Hopefully we will search for alternatives to the poisin and cut crowd, and realize that we do have a very big stake in our own health and well being. We can allow "Big Pharma," and their partners in crime to lead us around by the nose, or we can be proactive. We can seek out the help of others and begin to think out of that box our Doctor's have put in.

Mind you if I am in an accident, and suffer trauma yes take me to nearest "Trauma Center." Otherwise I will look for other means of recovery. Because one thing I have learned in the past 10 years, is that the body is self healing, and if we treat said body properly, it will heal itself. Again exercise, fresh air, sunshine, water, proper sleep, a good diet, and a good spiritual posture, goes further than any drug. Add to that good friends, and time to play, and that is a good formula for a healthy you. Happy living.

Before I received my PhD in psychology in 1967, I went through a course of abnormal psychology in which there was lively debate regarding whether there was such a thing as autism. Now, I know I had it as a child. I remember the pain that resulted from looking into a person's eyes; and I experienced panic each time I was in a crowded place with my mom, for I couldn't recognize her face. I also suffered from dislexia; was so still in the crib that I was taken to the doctor when my head began to resemble a lollipop, etc. When 10 years old, I developed an unreal interest in electronics, that later caused a number of problems (insomnia, for example, when I couldn't get to sleep because I was designing circuits in my head all night long). Perhaps partly because I was so distant emotionally, I was beaten - daily, for some years of my childhood - and my back was always covered with scabs and dried blood.

Regarding causes, I was born in the mid-'30s when all food was organic, vaccinations were few. However, we did drink pasteurized milk, and I did suffer from constipation.

Having spent years specifically trying to asses research in psychology, I'm skeptical most research (read, for example,

After a number of "paranormal" experiences in the 1970s, I began to search for a better source of knowledge. In 1973, I joined Self-Realization Fellowship and began meditating a couple of hours per day - a practice that I continue. SRF also provided dietary recommendations, which I follow.

For knowledge, now I mainly try to improve my intuition, which I now consider to be an elusive, but highly reliable, source of information. I still suffer some from migraine headaches, grinding teeth, etc, but life is incomparably better than before. Meditation works!

Dr. Mercola, Thank you for posting this story about Autism and talking about the connection between diet, autism and schizophrenia. I have been studying the connection since one of my children developed schizophrenia in college 6 years ago. I have watched my child come back from paranoia just by putting them on a gf/cf diet (it takes about 3 days). However schizophrenia is a resistant disease in adults,many times they won't stay away from the things that make them sick.(Casien is addictive if you have a leaky gut). However I do feel that if a child is put on this strict diet they have a great chance of recovery. My advice is to put the whole family on the diet so the child won't feel singled out and be very careful about hidden ingredients--eating out is very, very difficult, but YOUR child is worth it!!!
