After 3 days I was crying and couldn't stop. I just wanted to end my life. Over the weekend I got better and assumed it was the diet soda. I did the guinea pig thing and found that it was, so I stayed away from it. A couple of years later I was doing the slimfast diet with my husband. I decided to do the ultra slimfast because I didn't want to do milk because I was lactose intolerant. About two days later I was in my bedroom crying my eyes out wondering what was happening to me. I told my husband I felt like I was being poisoned like when I was in college on the aspartame. The lightbulb went off and I ran to the kitchen and read the label - there it was in the ultra slimfast. Aspertame. I avoid it like the plague but I often wonder if people who are depressed or suicidal might be ingesting this poison and not know why they are feeling the way they do. People give me the weirdest looks when I tell them I get suicidally depressed when I have aspartame. I watch the labels like a hawk now. I use sugar when I want something sweet or honey. I haven't found a stevia I like yet but I use that occasionally too. The thing that irks me is that I am finding it in everything lately. I couldn't find an ibuprofen or tylenol for my kids when they had the flu that didn't have it in it. Read all labels - especially the ones that say sugar free or no sugar added.

My warning of aspartame came in a different way, back in the mid 80's. I was working one of those $5.00/hr jobs at a Coca-Cola bottling plant, and got to help make some diet soda syrups with aspartame in them. In the syrup rooms, when you make this stuff, you have to add the aspartame into the syrup vats from packets. It creates some dust clouds when you add it, and by the time I was through, I could not believe the massive headaches that I got from it!!!! And although I was immediately disassociated with it from the experience, convincing my mother is another story altogether!

Being born in 1960, I remember FDA's sweetener transitions into our culture (through my mom's usage), going from sodium cyclamates, to saccharin, to aspartame (NutraSweet), and now we have this Splenda crap coming out! While FDA and big business are guilty for these deadly "money-making" ideas, we need to spread the word in a considerate, not demeaning way to the consumers of it!

My mom is going to get another dose of this info, too, but along with it, I'll have to suggest some alternatives, as well! If we don't give alternative solutions to the problem, or just rely on calling them "stupid" or "maniacal" for doing it, we too, will be contributing to this trend of big business making big money off of selling poisons for victims' consumption! My suggestion to my mom will be dropping the aspartame for changing her sweet tooth habits to use limited amounts of sugar, and when possible, to natural sweeteners, like honey. On a tight budget, she should still be able to do this, and get rid of this crap!!!

This especially applies to man made (synthetic) foods - such as aspartame. For example, it may not be evident to the more 'aspartame-sensitive' individuals they have this vulnerability. By the time they discover it - it might be game over, and the damage is done. In such circumstances, arguing about scientific proof becomes somewhat academic. All the scientific proof you need is there already. In excess at least, aspartame is dangerous. Unless you know for certain you are NOT sensitive to aspartame - at ANY level, you should probably discontinue its use. If you prefer, you can convince yourself you are the 'average' subject - and can drink 20 cans/day. But if you happen to fall outside that median range, you may be the unlucky one to pay the price. That's a value judgement every one can make for themselves. It seems to me that is far more critical than getting absolute/categorical proof one way or the other - a somewhat elusive target

Moreover, whilst aspartame alone may not cause brain tumors, or Alzheimers, we know virtually nothing about what happens when it is combined with the cocktail of other environmental toxins we are exposed to. Thats more a game of Russian roulette. Why then expose yourself to that risk, especially when there are alternatives, and especially when artificially sweetened beverages fail to reduce weight?

The science is not providing categorical proof - and it probably never will. It is providing a warning. Common sense dictates we should listen very carefully to that warning, and act prudently. That probably means limiting the use of aspartame. The 'purists' can eliminate it altogether, and in so doing, eliminate ALL risk - whether that be large or small.

Note also the FDA's treatment of stevia in comparison to the artificial sweeteners. It suggests they cannot be trusted in the least on these issues.
