Surely, it’s not by purchasing more “green” products, because buying and using more “things” is all part of the problem .
22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

It is a proven fact that countries that can feed clothe and shelter their people always have

a population ceiling. They by choice have the number of kids that keep the populations at an even keel, without government interference or guilt! In other words, it's always poverty that drives population explosions. People use a lot of children as a social security method in their old age and things like that. some religions also encourage lots of kids, whether right or wrong. This is a personal choice, and for every person that has 12, there are a host of others who have none or one. Stop berating each other.Geeeze!

As far as green, I do the best I can to recycle, reusse, etc, but I don't ever feel guilty! Guilt accomplishes zero and makes you feel worse. I use Comet cleaner, so sue me. but I also use very little heat or gasoline, so yeah for me. We are all just trying to survive on this mud ball we call home. and yes, corporations are the worst offenders, but just because someone jumps off a cliff, does that make it ok to jump as well? No. don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Judge not... Jesus said let the little children come to me for the kingdom of heaven is made of such of these. How dare we decide what others should or should not do in their own private lives. Saw a program on tv of 3rd world country people and they were saying that their children are their joy, and we sit in judgment of them. How dare we. They know what causes pregnancy; one shouldn't treat them as if they are our inferiors and need our superior intellects to do what we think is in their best interest. Shame on you.

1900 = 1 billion people

1950= 2 billion people

2008= 7 billion people ... error

You think this might be just a little problem everyone?

I am not for sterilizing anyone, but you have people who think it's their born duty to have 12 or more kids. I mean come on, show some respect to everyone else who would like to inhabit this world. This may make me sound like a jerk... but in my experience the most sheep like and weak minded people who don't consider anything outside their own entertainment, are the ones who feel the greatest urge to have as many kids as possible. I guess it's because they know they have weak and pathetic genes or something, so they have to give your genetics a shot in this world (lol, sorry that was kind of mean...but true.) At any rate, we have to do something about our overpopulation problem, every year brings us 78 million people? I am the last person to want to make a law about anything but, maybe we should limit kids to 2 per family? I certainly don't want to have to resort to Chinas horrific methods for population control that is for sure! So we have to act quickly for that to be possible. First, let's drive all the illegal Mexicans back into thier own country, that will deal with about 30 million alone. :)

There are 3 ways to combat the corruption we see with the big companies and government. First, as a consumer, we have the powerful weapon of choice. We don't have to buy materials, foods, or medicines, from the companies harming the environment. Second, we can choose instead to live simply and because of the current condition of the environment, more green. Happiness is not about buying the biggest house, the fanciest car, or the most sophisticated cell phone. I mean do we really need such extravagant things? Third, we can strive to live and be more healthy in exercising, avoiding cow-***-saturated fast food (and all fast food in general), eating/drinking more smartly (looking at ingredient/nutrition labels) and make an effort to be more informed. In maintaining good health, we won't need to see doctors or buy the drugs from a pharm company that will probably recall the drug in a year or two that will more likely cause more harm than good to you.

If we consistently do those three things, we can critically shorten the demand for those corrupted companies' goods and servics and big-time strengthen the financial longevity of those companies who truly respect the Earth, it's people, and nature. Government corruption would end because there would no longer be lobbyist influence, "under the table dealings," and illegal market activities. By putting the corrupted companies in extinction, there will no longer be the fuel to corrupt our government. We can then begin the healing process.

What about people losing their jobs? Well, there won't be job loss. Instead, there will be a job shift. Ethical and caring companies will see demand for their good and services and will need more people. What about fast food? New types of fast food will be seen. Perhaps we will see a "Green-Donalds," or "Veggie Burger King."

I really enjoyed Dr. Mercola's article and the comment articles that followed. It's good to see everyone's exchange of ideas.

Oh, my, that just makes it easier for me to chew on my feed lot beef while talking on my cell phone and drinking my 4th cup of cheap Bolivian coffee. It isn't my fault, so I have no responsibility, so why try to act "green?"

I think the point of the article was to show us we can EACH take INDIVIDUAL responsibility for our effect on the world around us. We can make simple accommodations that will impact our impact on the world. That is the point. Do we make responsible choices?

Some of what we do at our house:

1. No clothes drying with electricity - except in extreme cases (rain for 2 weeks can make you resort to drying a load of jeans in the dryer). We use a clothes line, or do laundry before bed and hang it on racks in the house.

2. Wood stove - highly efficient, multi-tasking, Pioneer Maid stove designed and built by the Amish in Canada. They get paid a fair price, we get renewable energy. (Not renewable in some areas mind you, but the trees grow fast and are in constant need of thinning on our 80+ acres) The stove doesn't just heat the house. It also heats our hot water, humidifies the house, AND cooks our meals. All for a few pieces of wood daily that needed to be thinned to keep our luscious forest vibrant.

3. Lights out - brightness up! Lights don't need to be on if the windows are large enough and efficient, the wall colors are bright and reflective, and the ceiling is NON-textured, semi-gloss white. We use little electricity in our 2200 sq ft house. Gives me a few kilowatts to spare for a computer and internet - one of our electrical splurges. Oh, and NO CFL mercury laden bulbs. Just incandescents that rarely need to be used.

4. Vehicles, the right vehicle for the right job. Yes, that is a Suburban you see in our yard!

re: The Six Principles of Green Living

As you have noticed...everyone is jumping on the "green energy" bandwagon, which is an improvement. However, if I were a "slick-as-snot" salesperson looking for the next way to make "big money" using my saavy sales techniques...that's the wagon I'd currently jump on. That's why I'm cautious about the markeeters out there pushing their "green product" or way of doing things. Some are legit and some are just salespeople doing their jobs.

I don't think we can completely blame the companies for attempting to make a profit. It's also the employees that choose to work under them that keep the business profitable. If they were to acquire a conscience during their employment, they would lose their jobs. It's a double-edged sword, but that's business (as ugly as it is).

All of modern industrial society has been inundated and overwhelmed with "pollution for profit" items.

And yes, I agree there should be "Balance in all things"... Also, big business is the biggest polluter, but they react to the demand of the consumer. We can make a difference. Make your next car a 4-cylinder, and get rid of your cell phones. (Are you willing to make sacrifices like that for a better world?)
