I was a pig during my first pregnancy and gained about 45 pounds -- had a girl. In my second pregnancy, I was careful, ate sparingly, gained 19 pounds and had a boy. Oh well. So much for scientific studies. Guess they just didn't have enough subjects participating.

At the time, there was research in the literature regarding the acidity or alkalinity of a woman's vaginal tract having a statistically significant impact on which sperm made it up the canal to the egg, and therefore impacting the likelihood of one gender over the other. I forget which sperm thrived in which environment but the hypothesis was that if a woman concentrated on certain types of foods to increase one or the other (alkalinty or acidity) for the six months or so before trying to conceive, she would be able to increase the likelihood of having a baby of a specific gender. Given that many women have babies of all the same gender, it makes sense that something environmental in her system is affecting which sperms die off before making it to the egg and others thrive and one makes it. This line of research seems much more scientific (although hard to manage given the time involved and the fact that many people don't wait months for anything after deciding to get pregnant) than self-reported breakfast habits or even relative obesity, etc.

Any woman taking a good form of soy/soyflavones will attest to having an easy time, if not no trouble or symptoms at all ( as myself), with the effects of menopause and that's just the start! As for diary/milk, there's been more trouble with lactose intolerance, etc. etc. etc. for more people than will admit to it until they're really sick than almost any other 'food'. Cow's milk is for baby cow's---look around and take note of the 'people cows' around you and check out theri daiiry intake, bowel problems, et al. Anyway, booo on Mercola for dising soy. It rocks!

Although I found it funny, when I became pregnant with my little girl I wasn't very healthy. I thought I was, I drank soy milk and ate organic veggies & fruits when possible. But I still ate lots of fast food, junk food etc...ah, wish I'd known! I found out about Dr Weston A Price's findings when I was 5 and a half months pregnant with her. I thank the Lord for this. I started on raw milk, stopped the soy, found grass fed meat etc. My little girl is very healthy now. I also found Dr Mercola and didn't vaccinate her!!! She has never been ill! I am now pregnant with a little boy. Prior to concieving I was drinkng smoothies EVERYDAY, always with a banana in it. I still drink my raw milk, eat real butter and coconut oil and pastured eggs. In other words, I was truly healthier at this point. I know that this has nothing to do with his gender, but it struck me as funny when I read the article.

On a different note, I am 30 weeks along and was wondering if anyone out there had some useful advise for settling the heartburn I get every night! It only happens at night and wakes me (ugh). I take a homeopathic & enzyme based digestive tablet with dinner. I eat dinner as early as possible. My foods are 90% organic. I will sometimes eat my homemade fermented sauerkraut at night (used to help, but not anymore). It doesn't matter if I eat a raw dinner or cooked, the results are the same. HELP!

So if you want to improve the odds of having a boy without in-vito fertilization then I would suggest following shelton's method of charting cervical mucus and basal body temperature and ovulation. This theory suggests that you should have sex 2 1/2 to 3 days before ovulation to conceive a girl; the closer you conceive to ovulation, the greater chance you have of conceiving a boydue to the speed of the male sperm.

Shettles also suggests that if you are trying to conceive a girl your partner should perform shallow penetration, while deeper penetration should be more effective for a boy again due to the speed of the male sperm. Also, Shettles recommends that you don't orgasm during sex if you are trying to conceive a girl, as the substances your body produces after orgasm make the vaginal environment more conducive to "boy"" sperm, also the contractions from an orgasm causes the uterus and vigina walls to contract to help sperms mobility.

I drank a bit of milk in the weeks leading up to the conception as a female sperm is attracted to calcium and a male sperm likes pottasium. With a girl you abstain from ejaculation for about 4 days as boy sperm dies quicker so the longer the sperm has been waiting for release the chances are the more girl sperm will be around. When you ovulate have sex and don't have any more sex until a week has passed. With a boy have heaps of sex in winter and reduce your intake of meat as the boy sperm likes an alkaline passage whereas a girl likes an acidic. This is what I've discovered as a mum. I've had four children and they are boy 15, girl 9, boy 8, girl 8months. I also had a lot of silly stuff go wrong with boys but the girls pregnancies were uneventful. Thankyou Dr.Mercola for your thought provoling articles.

The pollution, including DDT, PCBs, dioxin-like chemicals, and certain heavy metals (arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury) does accumulate in certain foods, including fish, and land animals, whole fat dairy including cheese. In that way, diet can be a contributing factor to developmental disorders of the reproductive track and other endocrine disruption. But, the issue is more complex than this one study or its sound bites.

I suggest that interested persons read Our Stolen Future, a Scientific Mystery story, (by scientists Theo Colborn and John Peterson Myers, which is made readable by Diane Duminoski, 1996 Dutton Books), which is based on then unpublished (now mostly published) scientific studies to see what has occurred in the laboratory and in wildlife studies. This is not as simplistic as the genetic code, nor is this a religious issue. All over the world scientists of various mediums have found numerous developmental disorders which are showing up in wildlife, wherever the animals can be studied. Endocrinologists and other physicians are finding the same sorts of effects are showing up in the offspring of humans. The reason may be because the entire food web is contaminated with xenoestrogens and androgens--foreign chemicals (to the body) which behave or act like estrogens or act against estrogens, and are causing all sorts of havoc on the bodies of birds, other animals, including humans.

The book lists known xenoestrogens, and the web site at ourstolenfuture.org has updated those lists with ongoing studies.
