Dear Bec012,

The anatomical standard about left and right is related to the person in question, not the observer. Where your heart is is the left side and it's the left side even if viewed from behind or upside down. Similarly, "up" or "top" related to the head end even if the person is lying down.

Topic hits 'a nerve', so to speak. Right ear took 90 % of damage to it's hearing ability on range, left only 75 %. Written off as 'legally deaf'. Smiling and nodding carries 85-90 % of the time, then you see that pecular look on their face. You later, perhaps, learn from a deeper, huskier voice that they were telling you their mother just died. Socially devastating. Keep smiling and nodding. Hey 90 % ain't bad. Good friend told me I'm not missing anything.

All brain lateralization studies are done with right-handed people. So, the article's generalizations about what happens in each side of the brain is _only_ applicable to right-handed people (85% of the population).

For those of us who are either left-handed or ambidextrous, the locations of things like "logic and language" vs "emotions and music" are quite different. About 10% of us are built the same way as righties (logic on the left, emotional reasoning on the right). About 60% are directly the opposite (logic on the right, emotional reasoning on the left), which means that the strong hand _still_ is connected with the logic and language part of the brain. The remaining third have all functions distributed evenly throughout both sides of the brain (ie there is no lateralization at all!).

As a student of Brain and Cognitive Science at MIT, I sometimes tried to make some extra pocket money by participating as a subject in experiments. As an ambidextrous lefty (I write with my left hand but really can learn any new task with either one), I was not allowed to participate in a great many studies. I found ways to participate, but the scanning studies at the time were only interested in making baseline generalizations, and they knew I would muddy the data!

So, the lefty in your life may be "left-brained" or "right-brained" or neither--and the side of the head that goes along with those identities might not be what you expect! So be sure to whisper your love into _both_ ears, just to make sure your bases are covered.

Its interesting to see the many different ways the brain processes input. I love to see the way the brain adapts to limitations placed on it by circumstance. We are an incredible design, are we not?

Do they mean 'his/her left' (so essentially, to us, it appears to be the right ear when we look at the person's face) or what WE perceive as the left ear when we look at their face front on (his/her right)?

Sorry, this always baffles me.

This is interesting, but doesn't apply in my case. I am very artistic (and terrible with numbers), and I am totally deaf in my left ear (spinal meningitis).

The left side of my child's brain has been damaged by seizures. Interestingly, she is methodical and logical and has great trouble with imagination, fictional concepts and understanding emotion. Strange. I'd think she'd have less of those traits with an impaired left hemisphere but they are very predominant.

I was taught in college biopsychology that the ears are the only things that don't cross over. The R ear goes directly to the R side, and the L goes to the L. Am I remembering this incorrectly, or has there been some new information since then that proved this wrong?

If this is the case, then wouldn't one want to propose into the R side... maybe the L logical side would be better for a proposal if it's a really good one. ;-)
