Interesting article. Does anyone have any information on the Chelating foot pads that are advertised on TV and sold at Walgreens and health food stores? They claim to drag heavy metals out of the foot into the pads while you sleep. After reading the above article I am concerned that too much calcium may be dragged from the body resulting in dire concequences; or perhaps they are another scam.

On a website specifically relating to cancer (www.cancerfightingstrategies.com), the virtues of Liquid Zeolite are mentioned. I understand that this helps get rid of the heavy metals in our bodies and I wondered whether anybody has any experience of this to relate. Or, indeed, what is Dr. Mercola's own view on this?

The other solution to heavy metals in our system is an infrared sauna and a shower afterwards with a good scrubbing down so that residues do not enter the body again afterwards. Only infrared sauna now, not the steam sauna. Infrared sauna is at least four times more effective and much more comfortable to use.

Sarah & Dizzy - I thoroughly agree w/ your assessment that those w/ AS like you don't need to be fixed. What both of you have described are exactly the observations I made among my friends (lovingly calling themselves geeks in our Tech school environment) - we've decided that the "painfully shy" "savant" needs to be fixed.

And I don't think that lumping this in w/ children who have autism as described by Dr. Campbell-McBride (in her GAPS theory) helps anyone - for reasons you have mentioned, including the horrible specter (& likelihood) of prenatal diagnosis of the "autism gene." It doesn't benefit NTs to think that those w/ AS are just weird and we have a good reason to avoid you - no, you're normal, just different, and it benefits all of us to learn to accept, respect, & cherish you & all your strengths & weaknesses, as with *any* person. It doesn't benefit As's to need to be "fixed" & it doesn't benefit vaccine- or otherwise-damaged children to be told they don't need fixing b/c they're normal & fine.

The GAPS theory is fascinating - there is so much more to it than thimerosol. C-sections, separation at birth, formula, vaccines, antibiotics, sugar, processed foods - inheriting the effects of all these from your mother & then having them yourself ... they all throw off the gut flora, starving the brain of crucial nutrients. Children thrust into an autism w/ was not manifesting at birth deserve to have a shot at returning to the life they once knew. At the same time, all of us owe it to ourselves and others to learn to accept and love people of every sort.

The "high" and "low" functioning terms seem like someone's attempt to make the distinction between the two situations. What do you suggest? What works better? ITA that function is subjective - & doesn't matter when assessing someone's worth, anyway.

As a physician involved with chelation since 1991, there is no doubt in my mind that autism is causally related to metal poisoning. However, my experience and that of experts such as Dr. James Roberts and Dr. David Quigg (scientific director of Doctors Data) is that EDTA is ineffective for mercury. Dr.Boyd Haley (University of Kentucky) has published data that EDTA forms a neurotoxic complex with mercury which may be dangerous for persons with a defective blood-brain barrier. Because mercury and other toxic metals deplete glutathione, rapid mobilization of toxic metals using synthetic chelators can cause severe adverse effects since glutathione represents the body's main defense for detoxifying metals and chemicals as well as protecting against oxidative stress. After witnessing many adverse reactions to synthetic chelators such as DMSA, DMPS and EDTA, I much prefer natural chelation using a combination of glutathione precursors, essential minerals, potent antioxidants and protective substances which bind metal toxins, raise glutathione levels, prevent reabsorption of toxic metals, enhance the body's natural detoxification mechanisms and minimize adverse side effects. The Powers that be hate, and are afraid of anything that smacks of alternative medicine. For this reason they attempt the blame the victims, or their genes. At the same time they do not want any blame to touch their precious millions, I mean vaccines. Within the past twenty years, there have been more and more victims of Autism, no one wants to admit to the truth. Yet along comes a means of treating said disorder, and it is flatly condemned, by the KILLER medical establishment. Imagine that. Only goes to show why they call it practicing medicine.

Maybe one day they will get it right. Until then proceed with caution. Regular doctors may be good for diagnosis, and then we will treat ourselves. No KILLER doctors.

Heavy metals the cause of autism....(NHC)..Cancer and most other diseases....(Dr. Hulda Clark).........I tend to agree with people who have actually done the legwork and have hands-on proof.....than accept what/how someone feels about what causes their condition. NutritionalHealingCenters KNOWS because he has been there and done that! Dr. Clark KNOWS the frequency of the bacteria/fungus/virus that needs the HEAVY METAL to survive and prosper. That heavy metal could be passed thru the placenta and passed on, as well as absorbed (skin), eaten, or..... finally respiration! So to say you were never exposed to something is to claim you know the biochemical make-up of everything you or your parents have ever worn (or handled/touched), breathed, or ingested (solid or liquid). I have a husband who has been diagnosed with Asperger's and our daughter received the same diagnosis a month later at the age of 4 1/2. She did have language delay (both expressive and receptive) after experiencing autistic regression including language loss just after her 2nd birthday. My husband (computer guy) has regressed also in his thought patterns, behaviors, and temper. He was receiving flu shots yearly with a new job with "good" healthcare coverage in 2001...he will soon be seeing our daughter's DAN! doctor. According to my college correspondence course from Seattle Pacific University, "40% of Asperger's have a significant language delay but end up with average expressive and receptive language skills by age 5 or 6." My daughter's autism regression reversed suddenly when I took her off "cold turkey" of her addiction: DAIRY in the November 2005...it was remarkable: she became ticklish again, started feeling pain, cutdown on temper tantrums from 14 a day to maybe one, gained new words just 5 days off of dairy (she was down to 8-10 words), became affectionate, and she stopped tripping everywhere. She is on a GFCF nearly soy-free diet. 4 rounds of DMSA chelation therapy by suppository has brought her out of another mini 3 month regression which we believe was caused by colloidal silver recommended by our naturopath. Her eye contact came back after chelation therapy and more compliance along with better receptive and expressive language skills. (We haven't tried DMPS yet or transdermal creams while IV chelatin would be scary for her.) My daughter's biggest problem according to labs is lack of detoxification. I believe this was caused by childhood vaxs plus a flu shot that I had while pregnant with her and a flu shot she received at 20 months (her 3 older siblings and one younger do not have autism). She was the only child to receive her MMR & varicella on the same day resulting in a rash & her hyperactivity started around that time.
