Before beginning any program, a postural and range of motion assesment is crucial, as is a health profile. Every major muscle shares innervations with major organs, and poorly functioning organs will adversely affect performance. Some one with tight hip flexor muscles will make that condition worse by doing certain yoga poses. Someone with internally rotated shoulders can worsen that dysfunction by performing too much chest work, or front raises for example. Someone who sits at a desk all day should exercise on their feet instead of sitting down on an gym machine. To get the most benefit from any program, the body must be prepared for high- intensity anything. Due to our culture of sitting for many hours a day, almost everyone needs some form of corrective exercise to balance muscular tension front to back and side to side. this. We must remember that exercise is motion. Does the motion that you're performing make sense biomechanically and functionally? We don't train muscles when we exercise. Muscles are "dumb" and can't do anything on their own. The brain and nervous system command and control muscular activity, so we need to learn to perform motions effectively and safely. The best results come from a balanced type of training, including all modalities of endurance, strength and flexibilty.

I am familiar with the fact that exercise enlarges the heart but I never knew that different types of exercise effect the right and left ventricles differently. A combination of aerobic and strength training is, indeed, best for over all fitness, and for keeping your heart in good shape. I used to "interval train" extensively when I ran the mile in college, but I hadn‘t thought about it much lately. Maybe I‘ll start using it again; I know it is very effective.
I have been doing Cross Fit since January 2008 and am amazed at the positive changes I have gained from this program. It is a functional workout performed at high intensities, i.e. push ups, pull ups, dips, squats, sit ups, burpees etc. the list and workouts are endless, if you would like to read more, please visit crossfit.com. It is the workout of choice for military, police and fire fighters. If you see the workouts and feel intimidated (I cannot even do all the rx'd versions) there are scaled down versions, there is also a list of crossfit affiliates throughout the world, where you can go to a gym or garage and learn the techniques, trust me, this is worth every minute of your time and any penny you can spare (however the crossfit website is free). Thanks for listening!

I thought that HIIT was the good one and long-term endurance training was to be avoided as it wears down your joints and even makes the heart smaller as it is not required to work above its capacity. But this article now says that beside interval and intensity training we should ALSO do the long endurance type??? Very strange! I'll just stick with my sprints and weights etc.

Then you can do a combination of strength and Energy System Developement (cardio) to get the most amazing results. Knowing what I know now, there is no way I would ever attempt this type of training without a VO2 test, personalized program and heart rate monitor. Anything else is just random guessing, which is like playing Russian roulette with your health. Good luck with that.

KB training builds not only strength of the muscles, but powerful tendons and ligaments as well as stout joints. You also have to concentrate on the form and movements or you might wind up with a big piece of iron on your head; we can always stand to exercise the brain as well.

That's the end of my rant. Exercising at all makes you ahead of roughly 87%* of the American population, so bully for doing anything.

Buy a reel mower! You know, the manual kind that they used on the Astro Turf on the Brady Bunch TV show. I ordered one through Amazon.com for around $100 and got it this past week. It's wonderful! Not only am I helping my body to get back in shape, I'm saving money on gas as well.

You have to start and stop somewhat frequently to keep the grass from getting clogged up in the blades. The bending down here and there to move sticks and to remove the built-up grass gives your arms and legs a rest from pushing and works out some different muscles. I'm going to have some seriously strong arms and legs by the end of this summer!

My husband poo-pooed my idea for one of these, but he's been enjoying using it as well. :-)

Haven't lost a huge amount of weight but have dropped two dress sizes. Interval training with swimming involves varying the strokes, speeds etc. Swimming is low-impact and aerobic while also strenthening muscles. I find it is very very relaxing (almost like meditating) and notice my all round fitness and ability to tolerate stress are both vastly improved. I have read that swimming is not the best form of exercise specifically for weightloss, but I have been amazed with the results and feel I have finally found an exercise that will stay a part of my lifestyle for as long as I am physically able to get to a pool.

I try to stay away from bad carbs, but I don't really like vegetables all that much (they called me "the carbohydrate kid" when I was little). When I do need a piece of bread or pasta I choose one made from all or mostly "sprouted" grains (current choice is Healthy Hemp bread). I don't know the chemistry of it, but they are supposed to be much better for you than processed grains. I think I have seen Dr. Mercola recommend them once before, but he rarely mentions them as an option. Personally, I couldn't live without toast, sandwiches and pasta and sprouted grains are a way to have those things (in moderation) without doing too much damage. The only time I gain weight is if I am an idiot with my diet and not exercising at all.
