You can't get enough carbs from veggies on a raw food diet. Most of your carbs come from fruits on a raw food lifestyle. I eat mostly whole fruits, salads, green smoothies, and some nuts. I am a protein type. The protein in raw fruits and veggies is more bio-available than meat. Meat is much higher in fat than proteins, and the proteins in cooked meat are denatured. And the other benefit to living foods is that they are higher in life force (hado) than dead cooked foods. There are many athletes who are raw foodists too.

Dr Douglas Graham has done a lot of research on this. His book is the 80/10/10 Diet. He hasn't been sick in 28 years. "Time and again, he astonishes young athletes (often less than half his fifty-four years of age) by outperforming them in speed, strength, endurance, agility, balance, and many other aspects of physical fitness." www.foodnsport.com

" Dr. Graham cites statistics and research from the fields of nutritional science, sports physiology, and medicine, and he makes copious use of real testimonials in order to prove his points: Sweet, juicy fruit is Natures most perfect food for humans. The low-fat, raw vegan diet is richly rewarding and completely satisfying."

Also Dr Gabriel Cousens at the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, Arizona has been reversing Type 2 diabetes (and some Type 1) in 3 weeks with a raw living food diet and green juice fasting.

"With his revolutionary new plan, Cousens presents a program for anyone dealing with type-II diabetes, regardless of past history with insulin and other anti-diabetic medication. His new approach shows incredible results: medication use ceases within four days and many people having fasting blood sugars of less than 100 after three weeks." www.treeoflife.nu

Although work continues on developing these (GM fruit and veg) there is very little out there yet. The main culprits are soy, corn and canola, which are in nearly everything you buy, apart from plain, raw fruit and veg.

Hybrids are produced by one variety of plant pollinating another variety in the same family of plants, to produce a plant with the best characteristics of both. The disadvantage to this is the seeds can't be saved to breed from, as they are most likely sterile. This affects developing countries more than the more affluent countries. This is quite different to inserting a fish gene into a tomato in the laboratory!

I thought the fructose was perhaps chemically different from the fructose in fruits (the process of making HFCS from corn is long and complicated). To my surprise I found indications that fructose (unlike glucose) has negative aspects: experimental animals fed only fructose failed to develop properly (and their livers were a mess, trying to convert it) whereas the glucose was fine; and other evidence says that fructose does not produce an insulin response or proper leptin response. I read a book years ago by a doctor who completely reversed his type 2 diabetes by cutting out absolutely all fruits. So (as a type 2 diabetic of 22 years standing) I am re-examining my fruit intake (I like to snack on a few grapes, orange sections, etc.). I've started making my own yogurt (very easy) to avoid HFCS, and eating it in combination with natural peanut butter, staying strictly away from hydrogenated products (my irregular heartbeats went away when I did that). I do use some coconut oil and butter (per Dr. Mary Enig), eat whole eggs, and need red meat regularly. I love starchy foods but cannot handle them diabetically. I'm at normal weight.

The Health Ranger Mike Adams has articles about this as one alternative to getting your daily requirements of fruits and vegatables. But I do agree with the premises that whole fruits should be consumed for a good source of fiber which I am discovering to be a key element of my journey to becoming healthier.
