I have wondered many times if there is an increased risk of shingles for those who have been vaccinated for pox? Does the body truly respond the same to either? I'm guessing no based on the fact they want to vaccinate for it again, while those who contract it naturally don't seem to need to seek out infected people for a boost. Also, I wonder what the point of this shingles one is, seeing as how it's the same virus for both?

As to dealing with it (checken pox or shingles) once you have it, I can highly recommend a homeopathic gel originally designed to handle bug bites and to some degree repel bugs. It's called S-T-O-P-Sting. It's made from nettles and includes citronella. Smells great, works fabulously! Whenever I feel so much as a hot spot anywhere that feels like a "cold sore" or blister coming, I start putting this on. Use just a little, stroke it into the skin until it's all gone. Do this several times a day and the blister won't even appear. I have had it work for someone told by the doctor that, according to some test, she actually was developing shingles. Probably right, she was in excruciating pain. It was difficult for her to apply the S T O P Sting but she did and it worked. She continued it for a week after all the blisters and itching/burning went -- the pain itself, which can lingr indefintely after blisters are gone, gradually went as well. ditto post chicken pox. Shingles is no fun, it's agonizing, one can scarcly bear the weight of even a light cotton sheet. It works to neutralize the acid in bug bites and any infection the bug added to the mix. Try it! $6. a medium-sized tube in any health products store. Gaye

I think the story about dying if the blisters go all around the body is an urban myth. I had chickenpox and measles together when a child, and got shingles at 28, when I was six months pregnant. I think it went pretty well all round.

It was agony! I remember sitting in bed crying for two nights because the pain was so bad and I couldn't sleep. The doctor then gave me morphine and aspirin mixture, which was a life saver. He said the shingles was probably more painful than giving birth would be.

I doubt you would be given this today - too much fear of addiction, no matter how much pain you are in. You have to be almost dying before you get anything stronger than paracetamol.

They come with some severe side-effects, including death. If there was no vaccine against these diseases, how many childrens' deaths would be acceptable? The fact that gets glossed over is that the Shingles vaccine is going to benefit those of us that had chicken pox as children, now. The article about Shingles was excellent and fact based. Working as a Geriatric Nurse in a skilled nursing facility, I have seen many cases of shingles, all of which resulted in considerable discomfort for the afflicted individuals. I, and most of my colleagues in my age group, welcome the developement of this vaccine but we prbably won't be receiving it anytime soon because. at this point, it is prohibitively expensive and most insurance companies will not pay for it. "Big Pharma" is not the only "bad guy" out there.....

They HAVE to come out through the skin, the body's largest eliminative organ, in order to clear out

entirely from the system. You then have lifelong protection, which is the best. Vaccines are inferior and do NOT confer immunity, hence the constant need for boosters which bombard the immune system w/neuro-toxins and carcinogens such as formaldehyde, aluminum, mercury, di-ethylene glycol (anti-freeze), msg, neomycin, streptomycin, carbolic acid, phenols, squalene, dead animal pus, etc., etc.

The accumulative exposure of these heavy metals and toxins compromises the immune system and by the time a child is 6 years old, they've had 48 doses of 14 vaccines!! Enough is enough.

Unfortunately it is difficult these days to contract the above viruses and I remember when my kids were little, they went to a chickenpox party hosted by a doctor! This was in the early 90's before the chickenpox vaccine came out, which was designed primarily for parents so they wouldn't miss as much work, per Dr. Andrew Weil. The best way to protect yourself against shingles is to be around those who have natural chickenpox (small red pox (dots) on skin). Ask around Waldorf, Montessori, or homeschool networks when they have a chickenpox outbreak to contact you. Perhaps they'll let you visit to get exposure to the pox. Our kids were encourage to hug and kiss each other. But if you drink out of one's glass (if allowed), you'll definitely get some exposure which will protect you from contracting shingles.

My M-I-L's Dr told her (Mom is 83 this year) that she'd have to stay home and have no contact with children for two weeks once she received the shot. Plus, since the virus is 'live', as soon as the vaccine arrives at the Dr's office you need to go and get the shot immediately. I will give Mom a long list of the other reasons why she shouldn't get this shot AND ask her to sign-up for a tai-chi class.

In fact, I had them at approximately age 10. Around 14 years old, I got shingles. For those who said that it wasn't particulary painful or bothersome, I have a hard time believing it was actually shingles. It was EXTREMELY painful.

She is in her 60's and had chicken pox as a child, but I believe she has a compromised immune system as she gets sick very easily and often. I told her to rub organic apple cider vinegar on it up to 4 times a day and to put honey liberally on all the sores and to wrap it up. She said that this treatment took the sting and burning out and made it possible for her to go to work. The benefits would start to wear off about an hour before she was done for the day (it would last about 8 hours then stop working). She would go home, get a shower, reapply the vinegar and honey and be painfree again till close to morning. The only thing that drove me crazy is that her doctor prescribed anti-biotics for her "in case" she got an infection and my MIL took them! The honey would keep one from getting infected (honey is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-microbial). My MIL has over-used anti-biotics over the years like you wouldn't believe! The last time she got bronchitis, the doctor put her on 4 antibiotics before finding one that worked.

I am sure the Lysene would help as someone suggested because the Saturday Evening Post had an article about 10-12 years ago about how regular ingestion of Lysene would keep cold sores at bay. Cold sores (Herpes I&II), chicken pox, shingles, and Epstien Barr Syndrome are all in the same family.

There is no way I would take a vaccine against shingles.

I use honey when I do get an outbreak of herpes (I) on my lip area and it clears it up overnight, if I catch it in time, or completely within 3-4 days otherwise.

Hope this helps some of you who are or have suffered from shingles. Yes, honey IS messy! It melts. But it works magic. I do not see why honey could not be dropped into the ear (for inner ear help) and then flushed out later with a syringe and warm water. Cooked onions work miracles with ear infections, lung problems, and other infections.
