We dont eat tons of grains and pastas.... tons of veggies and fish for sure, yes we use cereals but most of them are not wheat, tomato sauce of course all the time, olive paste, olive oil, mussels etc chicken some pork, we hunt as well. some red wine, oregano, thyme, rosemary....

All my family is lean, no chronic disease thanks God and we usualy die around 95 ;-))) but definitely I can say that we haven't got that much grain, and we have staurated fat from Olive oil and the meat as well in our diet and we consider we eat traditional south east of France and Greece mediteranean diet.

Never heard we use a lot of grains in the mediteranean diet.

I especially liked reading the comments. It’s strange how most of the comments that disagreed with the article, sited other articles to prove their point. While most comments in favor of the article sited personal experience of how incorporating potatoes into their diet helped them lose weight or improve from some aliment.

I love potatoes myself. I eat them four or five times a week, baked, mashed, fired, boiled, salads, etc., with plenty of butter. So does my wife. Nether of us are overweight.

Nothing is frozen, processed, microwaved, etc. The (seemingly) identical foods when eaten here do not taste the same. They have kept the emphasis on "quality" when it comes to food whereas in this country the operative word is "quantity".

When a person gets that, it is a blessing when they pass away. We need to prevent it in the first place by taking care of ourselves and making sure we don't let toxic substances into our diet or on our person. Alzheimer's runs in my family and for about 30 years I have made my own baking powder to avoid aluminum, avoided antiperspirants that have aluminum in them and got rid of my aluminum cookware. I also challenge my mind on a regular basis, exercise, eat right, and take a supplement specifically for brain health to protect my brain from inflammation. I do not want my family to have to deal with an Alzheimer's patient! For more information on this great supplement, email me at walt.pat@hotmail.com.

So following the halal (or kosher for that matter) dietary rules is what is at stake here or should have been mentioned in the research reports.

In general believe obeisity (among other ailments) is primarily a psychological or psychosomatic issue and apart from individual cases one has to look at what defines the culture that generates these oversized and obeis folks. I suggest that the regime of fear and terror (real or fabricated), criminality, war, uncertainty since WW2 in the USA has caused those with a genetic inclination to do so, to overeat (and obvious go for those foods that are effective at the hormone/chemical level). Being fat is often, by psychologist, seen as a defense and the question is a defense to what. Again individual cases nothwithstanding, this is an epidemic dvelopment and one should look at the deeper causes. The food patterns are a result, not a cause, changing the diet is at best dealeing with the symptoms, not taking care of the root case.

I have no doubt that people who stuck "closely to the diet were 83 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes" but those same people in the USA ARE LIKELY TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF OTHER ASPECTS OF THEIR LIVES SUCH AS EXERCISING REGULARLY OR GETTING PLENTY OF FRESH AIR.

FACT: The people of the south of Italy have the most Mediterranean diets but are fatter (and live fewer years) than those in the centre of Italy (Rome) who in their turn are more obese than those in the north who eat the least 'Mediterranean' diet.

FACT: The longest-lived Italians are those in the north-east who are ALSO the slimmest. They have the double benefit of living close to the sea (the Adriatic) and the Alps. They get plenty of fresh air all the year round (skiing in the winter); the highest rates of particiption in sports and outdoor recreation. They are.... err... also the richest and have the highest rates of school attainment and the lowest rates of unemployment in Italy. The only problem for the epidemiologists promoting the Mediterranean diet (and Italy and Spain want to list it as a 'Patrimony of Humankind' with UNESCO and spend millions promoting it so that people worldwide will buy their pasta, wine and olive oil) is that these people have the LEAST Mediterranean diets (with a lot of pork and beef) of all the Italians.

It's always been my conclusion that if you wanted something in life, it's best to look at the people or person that has achieved that goal, and try to see how what they did got them there. It's not a secret that the Okinawans are the healthiest, most long lived people in the world. Even more than the Mediterraneans. Mercola always speaks out against grains, yet if you look at their food pyramid (www.okinawaprogram.com/.../okinawa_diet_food_pyramid.html), it clearly shows 7 to 13 servings of whole grains next the equal amounts of vegetables. How is it that they manage to be the healthiest people on the planet if grains are the devil? I'm not being sarcastic...I would love if Dr. Mercola could answer this.
