HFCS has been linked by many scientists to the nation's obesity epidemic.
The other problems with this product is that the leptin cycle, which helps humans know when they have eaten enough food, gets disabled, so the body never knows that it is full, so compulsive eating can be triggered when HFCS is used in even diet sodas.

A third problem is that corn itself is not a proper food for humans, just as it is not for pigs or cattle, and marbling of muscle with fat occurs in humans, just as it does in pigs and cattle.

Finally, HFCS is used in a vast variety of processed foods, many of which are not even sweet, due to the fact that corn syrup acts as a preservative, so it is used in frozen meat entrees, frozen vegetables, bread, and other processed foods. Sugar used to be used to maintain freshness in the past, but HFCS is somewhat less expensive.

This use of a product that cannot be processed by the body in so many products means that people with corn allergies are being exposed to an allergen, and people with use of HFCS in sodas tend to get even higher doses of this sweetener.

I have lived long enough to remember a world in which corn syrup was not commonly used in foods, but sugar was commonly used both as a sweetener, and as a preservative, and I do not remember such a huge number of obese and morbidly obese people. I am a hefty guy, and slightly over 300 pounds, but I routinely meet people who dwarf me in size, and have bodies I could not get my arms halfway around.

In general, I would agree that it is almost never a good idea. That being said, there remains a simple principle: Tax products and activities you wish to discourage. Don't tax those you wish to encourage. It seems to work most of the time, so maybe high taxes (ie. penalties) for things like HFCS would not be a bad idea.

Of course they do use sugar so these are special treats but it is so nice to have some raspberry jam or elderberry jam, mmm! Aunt Millies makes an organic bread without HFCS for those of you who can eat bread--I buy it for my husband, I don't eat it myself. The grocery chain, Meijers which is in the midwest now carries quite a few organic processed items which is nice for occasional use or for people who cannot give up their usual diet--for example they have catsup without HFCS.I have been preaching the no HFCS, artificial sweeteners, MSG to everyone for a long time but it is hard to get people to listen, even when they ask how I stay so slim and healthy at 51 yrs old and I tell them! It does help that I can direct them to the above places for at least healthier versions of the processed foods they like. I want to say though that I have a concern for how so many of you are touting the benefits of stevia--maybe it is okay as a natural plant but the processsed stevia that is in so many natural products now make me feel very strange--almost like when I have MSG or other excitotoxins . I prefer to stick with the sweeteners that our ancestors have used for thousands of years--raw honey. I get it from local beekeepers who do not use junk for their bees and have found that I do not have any problem with blood sugar --as long as it is raw.
