We did! We grow as organically as possible AND donate to the local food bank as well as have a self-sustaining farmer's market crop planned for fall 2008/spring 2009, as well as selling to local restaurants (yes! organic here we come!). If you're wondering about $$ to start a project, go to your local food bank and ask. They can more likely than not tell you what agency to contact (here in WA state it is the Horizon's Project) as most local food banks have gov't grant programs of some sort or another. That way the community is in control of what pesticides are used and if farmscaping is a viable method to attract honeybees. We also have a composting project going (organic only) and will make use of cover crops. Beware some "organic" pesticide controls...studies are now indicating that some (some forms of Bt, possibly neem oil) are still detrimental to honeybees. If you use diatomaceous earth, use only food grade (also great tick & flea egg killer and if your animal ingests it, it will deworm w/o harm).

Happy Gardening!

The book Seeds of Destruction has case studies in which animals fed a 100% GMO diet died, their young ones being particularly vulnerable. Organic is costly---no doubt. And if you have a family with kids, you may think, forget it! Too much money. However, CHILDREN are ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE to pesticides. Check out the video on google Video by Dr. Laibow. (Codex Nutricide) If Codex passes, there will no longer be any standards for pesticides and by some experts' estimates, the pesticides will be so toxic that children and even teens will be dying by the billions! I kid you not!

Greene), and 2 more, in I believe, E.New York, and/or Bed Stuy. PSFC has helped these independent groups get going, along with another one in the Bronx. Anyone can do this -- but it does take a lot of work to start with. PSFC's markup is 21% and we have foods from every possible ethnic culture you can imagine. A lot of our produce is not organic, but "our" farmers are willing to work with us to minimize the pesticides. mWe buy Fair Trade and from farm & otherco-operatives in other countries. A word of warning: some of the apparently good guy companies offering so-called "natural" and "organic" this and that are not entirely truthful. But those who are really trying have websites and will answer questions. And the more of us who buy in these alternative markets (bypassing middlemen and avoiding agribusiness altogether), the more there will become available of their produce and other merchandise. And you need to know the FDA has something known as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) (ha, ha!). This means the producer does not have to list items on that list on their labels. READ READ READ, labels, Mercola, and everything you can lay hands on about healthy food. Good hunting.

If occasionally, you want a tin of beans, mayonaise or tomato paste; buy Organic, and if like me, you don't care for the taste of organic beans, or organic mayonaise; tweek it! I add a little organic soy sauce and honey to the beans, and a little mustard and lemon juice to the mayonaise. Better to do that, than ingest chemicals wouldn't you say!
