Too bad nobody told me that even ibuprofen and Pepto-Bismol prenatally can cause allergic sensitization of the fetus. My son wouldn't be handicapped today from going into a coma when I took those while nursing. In no way should they constitute as the bulk of your caloric intake, for sure, and perhaps these studies were attributed to people who over consumed nuts. Aren't we only supposed to have a handful per serving? And maybe not more than one or two servings per day?

I'm sure food allergies and asthma have little to do with nut consumption. Friends from more traditional countries would tell me "what the heck? we don't have all these food allergies, like peanut allergies, at home."

I'm sure it has to do with much more than that. Perhaps, your article you linked that talks about insulin sensitivity and nut consumption could come into play and perhaps these people are consuming too many nuts and it's the insulin problems that have to do with developing food allergies and asthma. My friends from more traditional countries eat nuts, but they also have healthier diets back home with less crap that can affect your insulin levels. Perhaps insulin is a factor in this and it should not be blamed on nuts at all. According to your website, and one of the books you recommend, you seem to agree that insulin is a factor in much of the illness in North America today. I'm sure the imbalances cause all kinds of problems, and maybe too many nuts just push something that's already at the end of the cliff just enough to fall off, and they should not be blamed as the prime suspect.

Much like others say, peanuts are legumes, and I can't tolerate too many legumes or I get all bloated and irritable. I don't think we were intended to eat them. Also, peanuts and other nuts can often become contaminated with mould. As well, they should be consumed fresh if at all, because fats (especially good ones) go rancid and these rancid fats can definitely affect if the nuts have good or bad effects on the body.

So many things to take into consideration, it's not fair to say nuts cause asthma or allergies.

Healthy, intelligent, raw vegans like Storm and Jinjee of The Garden Diet have great raw recipes including ones with raw nuts. They look 20 years younger than their "real" age and have 5 healthy, beautiful vegan children. Check out their website! I have learned to create easy raw salad dressings, smoothies, desserts, salads, main dishes, and healthy snacks. These raw foods fit right into my Aspie daughter's gluten-free, casein-free, soy-free diet and have allowed for more variety in her diet.

And why? I've been studying holistic nutrition for awhile, & have not run across any information like this. Also what about hempseeds? Those are supposed to be a perfect protein.

Another interesting thing; I have asthma, & my parents were told when I was born that I was allergic to milk, and the doctor recommended soymilk... yeah. Anyway, this was in 1969, so... basically, I was 3 when I first had an asthmatic episode & was diagnosed with asthma. Also, I am highly allergic to every animal with fuzz, fur, or feathers, no exceptions. Other allergies include a couple of dozen tress, types of grasses, molds, mildews, dust, melons, and many cleaning chemicals send me straight into an asthma attack. Of course, I have no idea why I have so many allergies, because also, my dad was an inside-the-house smoker my entire childhoodand beyond. But it's weird because neither parent has allergies at all to anything, and little brother either. Hmmmmmmmm.....

Fearn over from England to establish the soy foods industry as part of the war effort. This had nothing to do with the health food industry (what little of it there was at the time) but it certainly does now! The company Fearn Soya Foods was purchased in 1949 by the same folks who founded NOW Foods - the Richard family! Thus began the push for soy in health food stores. The Richards sold Fearn in 1985 to Modern Products. So, what's their take on soy now? Look at the food side of the catalog. Too many people make too much money off mass production of soy to reverse the trend now!

So...let's have a study on unvaccinated kids & mamas who didn't fall for the propaganda to get a flu shot during pregnancy!

My unvaccinated 14-month old loves nuts, has never been sick with so much as a sniffle, and doesn't seem to be allergic to anything (without any special effort to keep her away from germs, mind you--no shopping cart cover, no endless "washing" of hands with antibacterial gel, etc, just normal housekeeping and living). When her brother is born next month, I expect the same results, as we plan to keep using a system that seems to be working well.

Dr M has a bad habit of publicizing preliminary findings, some positive, some negative like this. Probably peanuts will be found to be the culprit, since so few people eat many nuts.

Speaking of nuts, I see lots of claims about 'raw' almonds and cashews, though both are now heavily processed, and cashews were always cooked decades ago. False advertising by the raw crowd? Trader Joe's sells 'raw' almonds that never sprout, for a more popular example, though in general they are above the usual corporate morality.

And the article says nada, Dr M, about chia, flax, or any seeds, right? Since the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA ranges from 2-15%, it's hard to accept a blanket statement about intrinsic metabolic inefficiencies. And does krill oil have any appreciable EPA? Krill get their DHA from algae, no?

Babies, in the world or in the womb, have very delicate, underdeveloped immune systems. New foods, particularly highly allergenic ones, must be introduced slowly and over long periods of time. Nuts are highly allergenic and, even worse, soy apparently imitates nuts when processed by the body, triggering the same kind of allergy as if a pregnant woman ate nuts all day long. So while consuming nuts occasionally during pregnancy may be fine, the omnipresence of soy in just about every prepared food we eat in the US is skewing the statistcs. Nut allergies do exist in Europe, but they are virtually unknown (although nut and other allergies are on the rise for the same reasons as in the US). It is unheard of to have to make nut-free cookies to bring to school or announce every ingredient on the dinner table for fear of unwittingly killing a guest. Why? Because Europeans eat more whole foods, and incidentally spend more time selecting, preparing, and enjoying their food. They simply do not consume as much prepared food, full of high frucose corn syrup and soy by-products and, as a result, have fewer allergies. So the advice is simple, eat real, whole foods instead of the processed garbage full of the by-products generated by an unsustainable profit-driven agricultural system that is bad for farmers and bad for your health.
