with google they do not keep track of your individual IP address. they just keep track of th number of times sites have been "hit upon. Some people are so paranoid. WTF do you have to hide anyway.?

How about you try something truly revolutionary, the United States Post Office? You get a guy like me who's been on the route for 13 years, who picks your papers out of the driveway so the thieves don't know you're home, takes your dogs back through the unlocked sidegate and secures it, sits with wandering Alzheimers customers while waiting for police or relatives to arrive, refers you to other neighbors who can meet your nneds and queries, deter criminals by being out there, make you laugh with my witty repartee, make you sigh with my stunning good looks (either gender, I'm flattered), inspire you with my fitness, listen to your lousy jokes and laugh, marvel at photos of your ugly kids, and, drum roll please...ta da, deliver hard copy mail. (I've had more FBI checks than you've had hot dinners!)

My middle class wage stimulates the economy, remove us and see what happens! Anyone can do it? Hmmmmmm, I've been a 2OIC at the world's largest savings bank, trained bank staff, been CFO, 2VP, and Sales Manager for a chain of appliance stores, including training sales people (oh dear, just dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back!), and have trained mail carriers. I've let go more Phds than you've got hairs on your head!

Enviromental concerns? Well, Republicans don't give a damn if it holds back a buck, so that's half of you. For the Demo's, there's soy-based ink that can be safely erased from long lasting, reusable fiberpaper in the works.

So, to sum up, take a step back to the 20th century with me, ditch all email accounts, and use the mail. I'll just, errr, keep this computer for archival purposes.

DizzyIzzy1, what you said about Facebook's privacy policy, I've heard is true about GMail. I refuse to join either Facebook or MySpace, although I've had friends nagging me to. I just have no interest in it whatsoever. As for your comment about most other web users probably being more interesting than you, well, a lot of them certainly have that opinion of themselves, but if you've ever seen some of the idiotic stuff on YouTube...*shudder*

I'm concerned about people saying they're not concerned about privacy on the web. Isn't taking that, "oh well, Big Brother's out there and there's nothing we can do about it" attitude pretty much the same as saying "oh, well, it's no use fighting Big Pharma, they have the power and the control." Granted, getting your privacy back is a much harder fight because who knows how far and wide your information could be disseminated in our hi-tech age and it would be a huge task to track down all the leaks. Still, that passive attitude of "it's gonna happen so just let it" is just what the leeches want to hear!

I love gmail but I did have one experience I think worthy of mentioning for other gmail users. I used to keep my email logged in and after many months of doing that I was suddenly locked out of my account for about 4 months. I must have contacted them about 5 times and finally got a response and once again had access to my account. During that time I finally read all that fine print that one never reads but agrees to and found that keeping your account logged in is against the rules.

Something that hasn't been mentioned - I was shut out of my gmail account for 3 months BECAUSE I kept the account "logged on" instead of logging out at the end of the day. I didn't know until I read all that fine print we never take the time to read before we agreed to it that it is a violation of their rules to stay logged on. I wrote to them 4 or 5 times before I finally got a response and my account was opened to me again. Just a warning in case someone else out there does that. It was my only email account and I was basically locked out of my business and private life......THAT WAS SCARY! But other than that, I love gmail better than any I've had.

I do agree with Femacamper's comment that Gmail and Google is Big Brother corporate fascism with a friendly smile. However, I should point out that there are tools out there can can take some of the ads and Big Brother out of Google. One is the aforementioned Scroogle, while another is the CustomizeGoogle plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer.

A lot of people unknowingly invite spam by posting their e-mail address on iine. I've seen it right here countless times. Spammers send bots to crawl the Internet, harvesting e-mail addresses from sites like this. If you need to display your addy in a form the bots won't recognize, do it like this:

JohnDoe at yahoo dot com.

I have Gmail, and it's good in many ways, but is a problem sometimes... they attach ads to all the emails, which triggers spam filters. I send out an email saying "Let's have lunch" and it arrives with 20 ads off to the side for local restaurants. That sort of thing.

Gmail is very good though at filtering out real spam. And at organizing threads of emails.

So, good and bad.

I can't say anything negative about any of the other email accounts because the only two I've ever had was hotmail and not long thereafter I got hooked on Incredimail and that's been it for me....I love Incredimail, it's so simple to use, it's fun, it's got everything I need and I don't know that there is any other I would like as much or more...

Would love to hear about other opinions concerning Incredimail...

I should point out that I've never had any problems using this email service the whole 8 years that I've had it !!!

In the UK, supposedly for security reasons, service providers have to keep records of someone's phone calls and copies of their email and internet activities for a year or 18 months. I don't like it, but it is a fact of life. We have very little real privacy anyway so I don't think privacy should be a deciding factor when choosing an email provider.

I've had a couple of Internet Service Providers in my lifetime and using their email systems is a problem if you change ISPs as that email address stops working. A web mail service like Gmail can be kept for life.

I love Gmail, but I would never write something in any email from any service provider that I wouldn't write on the back of a postcard.

I would like to get started using GMAIL. I am currently a long time AOL user and would like to avoid disappearing from all my contacts that know my AOL address. Has anyone figured out how to automatically initiate an auto response on an AOL account to inform anyone of a new GMAIL address? OR, some sort of PUSH feature to push mail to my GMAIL address from my AOL address (like pop3 accounts to the iPhone)?

I used Gmail and relied on the calendar heavily. Suddenly, a few months back, it became inaccessible most of the time. I have tried through several different browsers, etc. and all I get is a report of a broken link and all I am doing is clicking the "calendar" button on the tool bar. I gave up. It works now and then still, but most of the time does not. I switched to live.com. It is free too and has a calendar.

If big brother wants to watch you, he is gonna watch you. You can't hide from it, it is everyplace. People are paranoid and for good reason, but being paranoid won't change fact any more than using Gmail would.
