Quite independently of this video I did a plot the other day of the GDP/capita in the UK from 1884 to 2006 in constant 1990 Geiry-Kamis dollars: books.google.com/books . If the third logarithm to the base 10 is plotted on semilog graph paper, the curve is more upturned than linear, meaning that the economy in the UK since that time has been growing more than exponentially. The doubling time has gone from about 57 years between 1884 and 1941 (the year of my birth) to about 24 years between 1984 and 2008.

Now what does that have to do with influenza mortality in England and Wales which has been dropping exponentially since the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic? It means that all the progress that I or anyone else might make in mathematically modeling and understanding the nature of influenza and reducing mortality of this, or any other disease, is all for naught unless we can bring population growth under control. Does it not make sense that at least some of the reason for high GDP/capita is linked to good nutritional practices such as calorie restriction and to other healthful practices? Clearly such understanding and progress, and all that goes on at this site as someone noted, is on the left hand side of Dr. Bartlett's table. it is all such a depressing thought!

Of course I am assuming that too high a growth in GDP/capita is a bad thing, and must be evidence of an unsustainable use of the earth's resources. However, is not GDP/capita a measure of "good stress" at the same time? It seems that there must be a balance between "good" and "bad" stress to live sustainably. If the "good" stress becomes too high (e.g., including effort devoted to unsustainably using the earth's resources), there could be a catastrophic collapse to a mostly "bad" stress situation.

Well China tried the one baby per family thing and that would appear to be a step in the right direction. But just like cars - everyone knows they contribute to many problems but EVERYONE has to have one and nothing is said about it - so is the desire to have a family. I've never once in my life heard anyone say "if I have another child, that will be adding to the population". We're still at the point where people would look at you oddly if you said such a thing. But this is how people have to start thinking. With all the mathematics being thrown around, they are just ONE part of this equation. The rest is up to us.

A few arguments have been made against the main point of these videos that seem convincing at first, but upon closer inspection don’t seem to hold water.

First, it has been stated that you could fit the entire population into the state of Texas. While that’s true that you could physically put 6.5 billion people in there, as others have pointed out that by no means indicates that that many people could LIVE there, given the human demands for air, water, food, etc. This is referred to as the carrying capacity, the theoretical maximum number of individuals an environment can support. In fact, the carrying capacity of Texas is MUCH lower than 6.5 billion.

Secondly, some have said that the population is supposed to slow down on its own around 2050. The problem with this is there has been no slowdown in the last 10,000 years, so it seems like pretty wishful thinking. From the year 0 to 1200, our population doubled once again to 400 million humans; then again from 1200-1700, 800 million; then again in only 200 years, from 1700-1900, to 1.5 billion; then again in only 60 years, from 1900-1960, then again from 1960-1996, to 6 billion. Only 36 years. So even if we were to start slowing down now, how much slower do you expect it to be? After all, technically, another doubling in 40 years would be a slowdown. Is the earth’s carrying capacity 12 billion humans? Many question that possibility, but I haven’t heard of anyone say they believe the earth can handle 24 billion humans.

Some have also pointed to the correlation of standard of living and population growth. This point, as well as the first two above, is covered in Daniel Quinn’s “The Story of B” (the sequel to his book entitled “Ishmael”). These points and more are also covered in Daniel Quinn’s DVD “Food Production and Population Growth”, with Alan Thornhill, PhD.

In his books, Quinn brings in a cultural/religious question. If you believe that humans are separate from nature, then perhaps we don’t have much to worry about. OTOH, if you believe that humans are part of the total earth biomass - the mass of all living things - then you would see that the more humans there are, the less of everything else there will be. (Less biodiversity.) Indeed, many scientists estimate that 200 species go extinct EVERY DAY. Gone forever. (This rate is much, much higher than a “normal” extinction rate.) These other species don’t need us, but do we need them? Or are we all OK with a world of humans and rice?

Quinn is now recommending a movie he didn’t make, entitled

In the end, Quinn does suggest what the solution would entail, a point that was not covered in any of the Bartlett videos on this link, nor in any of the comments so far, I believe. Finally, he asserts that if humans are around by the next century, it will be because we will have gone through a new renaissance (that essence of which has nothing to do with a new technical/scientific discovery).

At age of 20, I realized that we have to reduce population growth or life will become unbearable. (The planets poulation was then 2.5 billion). Some other scientist claimed that the planet can support 20 Trillion of life (animals & humans). Every additional human will displace the equivalent in animal life.

Today there seems to be a slow recognition of the population problem, however other nations are trying to achieve western style living standards. Religious leaders, industrial leaders and Politicians are constantly pushing for population growths, triggered by power and greed. (Not for salvaging souls, I am afraid, nor for improving our lives) Politicians go even as far as paying baby bonuses, to encourage women to have babies, married or not, who cares who will have to support them. There is an endless supply of money out of tax payers pockets.

I can see that eventually, there will be terrible wars. Natures attempts to control human population growth, are often successfully circumvented, by using the human intelligence of finding ways to negate nature's plans.

Today, the population is about 6,698,000,000. I swore to myself at the age of about 20 not to have any children, re-enforced after marriage by diagnosed as border line diabetic.

Anyway I still hope the human race comes to their senses and will be able to stop the population growth, before the planet becomes an empty shell, devoid of life support or major wars....

When people follow God's agricultural laws (in the bible), things go really well. Food is grown in ABUNDANCE, and it's healthful. Also, there are no disease epidemics. Pests are kept in check--bad insects, fungi, bacteria, etc. But, no one wants to do things the Creator's way.

To "leslie2180" ... its clear you don't have the arithmetical skills to follow what Dr. Barlett was demonstrating. Go back to his beginning, follow along, and stop and look up the words you don't understand. You'll recognize words you don't understand because you'll have a feeling of 'blankness' when you go past one. Stop. Go back. Find the word you don't understand. Look it up. Use a simple dictionary: middle school level. Get the word defined. Make up sentences until you know it like you know your own name. Once you've gotten through the whole thing THEN comment. Because what you go on about shows such ignorance that its pitiful.

Energymaster your comment hit a nerve with me. I'm hoping I've misunderstood you. If not, then here goes.

Personally,I think we should all say "NO" to people who are for death on this site. Respect for life, health and liberty is what this site should be about.

In the 1960's, sociology teachers preached that by the year 2010 America would be "standing room only" unless we drastically reduced our reproduction rates. These scare tactics ultimately led to abortion "rights" and the killing of millions of innocents. A powerful thing, ideas.

Chinese peasants were (and perhaps still are) allowed one child. Consequently,there are whole towns with very few women and hillsides of dead baby girls.

"Control of population" almost always leads to death ... not life. And certainly not liberty.

"Fanatics" come in all shapes and sizes. The most dangerous hide behind high sounding arguments where killing some specific "seeds" makes the world a better place, Your little comment sounds ominously like the little German in 1940 with the funny mustache and a plan to rid the world of undesirable populations.

Oh Plllease !!! The entire population of Earth would fit into about five counties (42B sq ft.) . Populations mature and then STOP growing anyway - look at Britain, Russia, Germany are all Stabalized/declining . Same will happen elsewhere.

THe earth is 80% ocean , and only 10% inhabited. Desalinization works in every country, and ocean water will not run out.

Yes it is all coming to an end, its simple arithmetic. However there are some caveats. First there are some groups who are directing the current food crisis with the terrible produced food items in order to bring about heightened weakening of the masses. And second, for the arithmetic to be true, we must be measuring finite categories. Who told us that oil was a fossil fuel with limited stockpile? The same ones who gave us the nearly worthless school system producing educated people who have low self images and no knowledge of life aspects, like how to pick a spouse and how to cause love to grow, and what is love anyway? Nor do they have any business skills like public speaking and debating which should be core subjects, along with the Secret DVD, the Law of Attraction and energy healing with EFT. Education now just makes us believe in authority and that is all it is for. University is an extension of this, so why believe what is taught in Geology about oil being a limited resource, when it is more viable to believe it is a river of oil running under the continental plates just like water. If people do want to do something useful about this, we must change authority, all of it. I would suggest everyone take up network marketing and change yourself to become really good at it and make your presentations to local people and build an mighty organization where everyone has quitted their jobs and enjoying life by helping other people have joy and laughter and health and wealth. It is the single best way to impact authority and change this world to use their imaginations and create solutions that benefit all people.

God said "Be fruitful and Multiply" but he also said in Matthew 24 verse 19 "And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! "

So i think He is letting us know that maybe we should slow down with the overpopulation stuff. There is a limit to how many people the planet can support and maybe we might have gone over the limit.

History is riddled with civilizations that have collapsed so what makes us any different.
