...This is my problem with most health researchers and their studies - statements like the one above. Have researchers considered that the person with low B12 may, in fact, be ingesting adequate amounts, but perhaps something is going on that causes these low-B12 persons to use it up at faster rates?

As an electrosensitive who develops symptoms of an overactive adrenal gland whenever I'm exposed to electromagnetic/microwave fields (cell phone towers, power lines, cell phones, cordless phones, wi-fi), what if I AM ingesting enough B12, but I'm just living in an area of higher concentrations of EMF/RF, causing my adrenals to eat it all up almost as fast as I ingest it?

They are all so sweet, loving, patient and unhurried - all that mindfulness practice in walking, breathing. Just $70 for the weekend, the greatest bargain on earth, far as I can see. All you can eat, lodging, inspiration, good company, slow down.

"Thay" as they call Thich Nhat Hahn says that there is a lot of anger in chicken meat - they are caged, drugged, etc then slaughtered and I suspect there is a similar story to beef and other meat sources - farmed fish? Etc. Eggs are full of anger, he says in his book on anger. All his nuns and monks are strict vegans, at least from what we ate for the weekend. Where do they get their B-12? Do they supplement? I don't know.

But, I have felt the tremendous power in eating in silence, reverently, mindfully, chewing slowly. Nobody starts eating until the bell/gong sounds, and everyone is seated. Nobody talks while eating. Then, we are all asked to remain seated eating for 20 minutes until the gong sounds again. So there is a stillness of gratitude and joy in the room as we eat. Then you can go for seconds. At every gong, people stop what they are doing, reconnect consciously to the breathing, going "within" for at least 2 breath cycles. It slows everyone down, and brings us back to the present moment. Making the body and mind unified at least for those two breath cycles.

There was a powerful, gentle, sustaining and nourishing energy that came to me from eating this way - I don't think it has to do with the food itself. Could such a way of eating produce B-12 that would otherwise be missing? My vote would be yes. I found myself eating less, with greater satisfaction. The monastics there certainly look healthy on all levels. They do grow lots of their own food and that is served with each meal, too. Avocados, greens, carrots, other vegetables, apples, etc. Maybe that is it.

I started taking the rec'd type along with Folic Acid (B-9) and have noticed good changes.

Good vs cheap B-12

"Here is the form you don't want to see. It is called cyanocobalamin. The way to remember this is that it begins with cyano, which is like cyanide. Cyanide is a poison, right?

This cyanocobalamin is a cyanide molecule joined with cobalamin. This becomes a form of B-12 that is used by all the cheap vitamin companies out there. This is the cheap form. You don't want this in your body – not in my opinion.

Look for it, if you see cyanocobalamin as the B-12 then you know that is not really a high-grade nutritional supplement. It is probably a cheap supplement. They probably have cheap forms of all the other ingredients too.

The two forms you want to look for are methylcobalamin and hydroxocobalamin.

Now these two forms – methyl and hydroxo – are far more expensive because they are more advanced forms of this vitamin B-12. They are more readily available to your body. Your body can use them without having to donate energy to the chemical reaction that is necessary to free them from their current chemical bonds.

I don't want to get too technical but the bottom line is that these forms of cobalamin or vitamin B-12 actually donate energy to your cells instead of stealing energy from your cells.

You want the B-12 that is called pre-methylated or methylated. That is where you get the methylcobalamin or the hydroxocobalamin. Those are the things to look for. Again, you can go to any store – a health food store, a grocery store – any place that you might buy vitamins.

You can pick up that bottle, look for the vitamin B-12 on the label, and find out what form of B-12 it really is. If it is cyano, you don't want it. Leave it on the shelf. If it is hydroxo or methyl then you do want it. That means it is a very high quality nutritional supplement.

This is a subject that seems to be debated forever, process foods will not give you the best of that food as the process to package and deliver to the supermarket does eliminate a lot of the natural goodness in the food, so ..... why do we keep reading about vit problems, because we are eating foods that don't naturally provide those vits in there natural form ... how do we get those naturally producted vits, eat at source (raw). Simple!!!

Eating processed foods and no raw foods, then adding pills and creams is disrespecting nature but more importantly, disrespecting yourself and it feeds the medical profession! All we need is good food not processed or messed with in any way ... then you get what the body needs! A lot of people suggest 80% raw food and max. 20% processed .... If we consider that millions of people don't eat 5% raw, then maybe we should not set the bar so high ... I would suggest we all work towards 20% raw 80% processed and work from that point, maybe we could see in the near future a 50% split ... just image what this alone would do for us and our health?

We as a family shift between 50/50 split and 80% raw .. depends on many things but we go with the flow, if we are hungary and are offered food, we won't refuse if it is processed but will look to find the balance by ensuring we get raw foods as well ..... easy really and yes after time you will feel a real difference, less visits to the docs, less pills, less vits .... but do remember raw foods naturally produced (organic) are not the same as manufactored raw foods that will have been sprayed with toxins, so again there are 2 levels, you might have to compremise but were possible get organic otherwise the natural vits in the raw foods may have been damaged by the sprays .... start slow and add a few organic items to your shopping trip ... eat more salads, more fruit and more veg but also remember, cooking our food also can damage the vits .. I will eat meat (not too often) but i have one rule, if its not organic meat i will not eat it! Just research what they do to your meat before it hits your kitchen, often the animal is treated poorly and in some cases a animal can go from nearly born to supermarket without seeing daylight ... I can't image that meat is going to have any value to me ... i expect it was not a very healthy or happy animal and I'm going to eat it ..... no way, even if i was hungry!!!

Our daughter is now juicing and her 2 yr son is getting familar with the new tastes ... he will take a shot of organic wheatgrass without any issues and the 4 month old is getting a tiny amount of wheatgrass with filtered water as a refreshing drink plus his organic milk formule .... does it work, you only have to take a look at the nappies to know this makes sense, also the smiles and happiness from both is clear .....

For me there is no excuse, processed and packaged supplements are for those times in your life when you can't get organic raw foods .... otherwise there is only one option for a healthy life and thats getting what your body needs directly from source (as it comes out the ground without any extras ....), remember genarally speaking, supplements are processed .... that means they are not in there natural state.

Is it not clear that we are not as healthy as we could be? simply because we eat, drink and cover our bodies with processed produce that have no real benefit and in a lot of cases, these foods are making us ill ... I feel less debate and more action :-)

reikirebel

Think Less ..... Understand More

This is not propaganda, it is unbiased, scientific research. Check out Dr Gabriel Cousens website www.treeoflife.nu - he is a vegan raw foodist so you can be sure he's not biased in favour of animal based diets. You are right though, Urtica, that a large proportion of meat eaters also suffer from B12 defiency.

Apparently our bodies do manufacture B12 in the intestines but I've also read research that it's produced too far down in the intestines for it to be reabsorbed in sufficient quantities to prevent deficiency from occurring over time.

I really reccommend that everyone read Dr. Cousens' research on B12, even if you think you're fine. Please check www.treeoflife.nu

I am not affiliated with Dr. Cousens or his websites at all, and have no financial involvement with his work.

It is actually bacteria that produces B12.

"Many people say that the only foods which contain vitamin B12 are animal-derived foods. This also is untrue. No foods naturally contain vitamin B12 - neither animal or plant foods. Vitamin B12 is a microbe - a bacteria - it is produced by microorganisms. Vitamin B12 is the only vitamin that contains a trace element - cobalt - which gives this vitamin its chemical name - cobalamin - which is at the centre of its molecular structure. Humans and all vertebrates require cobalt, although it is assimilated only in the form of vitamin B12." -THE VITAMIN B12 ISSUE by Dr Gina Shaw, D.Sc, M.A., Dip NH, AIYS (Dip. Irid.).

Our body produces and reabsorbs B12, and in a healthy body, there is evidence that this is enough. If you are deficient in B12, perhaps look at the root cause before immediately jumping for your supplements. No animal or human has successfully been kept healthy or even alive on supplements alone, ( 'Nutrition and Athletic Performance', Dr D. Graham, 1999) doesn't this say something about the quality of this type of nutrition?

And also, meat eaters are just as likely to have a B12 deficiency as vegetarians and vegans.

Please remember to take everything you read with a grain of salt. You might be surprised what their financial incentives are.
