I began trying all sorts of teas , primarily green or white teas which were organic . At some point I became aware that the green teas were high in flouride . I had been contending with a lower back pain for several weeks which is something that happens to me every so often but never for that length of time . I decided to stop drinking the tea as an experiment and , when I did , the back pain stopped within a few days . I 'll never know if it was the tea or not but I think the two were related . Perhaps if I try the matcha I'll have better results because I would like to stop drinking coffee again as much as Iove the taste !

Tea has naturally high fluoride levels. Fluoride can weaken bones and discolor children’s un-erupted teeth. When fluoridated water is used to make tea, this increases fluoride's health-damaging effects

Four cups, of 20 teas sampled, delivered 0.8 to 1.8 mg of fluoride, when non-fluoridated water was used, reports Cao et al. in Food Chemistry.

“Among populations habitually consuming black tea, water fluoridation is not only unnecessary but also possibly harmful…The target organs of chronic fluoride intoxication are not only the teeth and skeleton, but also the liver, kidney, nervous and reproductive systems,” they write.

A March 2008 Food and Chemical Toxicology study found up to 4.5, 1.8, and 0.5 mg/L fluoride in black, green and white teas, respectively, when brewed for 5 minutes (61 teas sampled).

Brewed teas could contain up to 6 mg/L fluoride depending on the amount of dry tea used, the water fluoride concentration and the brewing time, according to the American Dental Association (ADA).

According to 1997 ADA data, 3 and 4 milligrams daily is adequate for women and men, respectively, to prevent fluoride’s adverse effects. It’s much lower for children. In 2006, the National Research Council reported the basis for those levels should be reduced.

Case Reports by Cao and Yi in the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry (February 2008) “Tea and fluorosis:”

--A 57-year-old Englishman’s misdiagnosed Paget’s disease (weakened bones) with osteoarthritis was finally correctly diagnosed as skeletal fluorosis caused by his long-term heavy tea-drinking habit.

--A Pakistani woman’s dental fluorosis resulted solely from tea which she consumed from age two.

--A 36-year-old Chinese woman’s ten-years of joint pain disappeared when she stopped drinking tea.

Nestle was promoting formula to 3rd world moms long before the Aids epidemic--their only purpose is to make money. Many babies have died because of malnutrition--the moms dilute the formula because they cannot afford it or the babies die from contaminated water being used to mix up the formula. THough it is possible to get Aids from human milk it is actually not proven to be a big risk factor and the risk of formula feeding has been proven. No excuses for their horrific practices--of course most of us on this forum are unlikely to buy Nestle products anyway but something to let your friends and family know about--they are baby killers!!!!

As far as the original subject--my daughter told me this story: a friends 15 yr old daughter kept getting UTI's--my dd noticed she only drank pop and sweet tea(southern thing--tons of sugar in the tea) this girl did not like to drink water. Her Doctor told her she did not need to drink water as her pop and tea were enough to keep her hydrated--but the DR was quite wiling to keep giving her scrips for anti -biotics! My daughter asked her if she would consider taking a bath in tea or pop instead of water--after all it is liquid! I have since used that line with those who argue that we don't need pure water to drink. I do like my 1 cup of green or oolong tea a day --early in the AM and no more than 1 cup or I will not sleep well. So filtered water the rest of the day for me!

Plus, on the fluoride comment.... I believe that natural fluorine that is within organic matrices are good. I mean, isn't chlorine also a toxin, but extremely important for biochemistry? Fluorine is right with other elements that the body uses, so I strongly believe that fluorides that plants naturally take up and use within themselves can't be all that bad.

re: Is Tea Healthier Than Water?

A possibly over-looked aspect of teas: non-organic green teas are often grown and harvested in areas where DDT has been or is currently being used. It is not unusual to find DDT levels (and the accompanying impacts) in people who do not make that distinction in their green teas. Drinking only organic should curb exposure.

Something to consider regarding: Water, not naturally contained in raw foods, circulates in blood but does not hydrate at a cellular level. Try hydrating an engine, or gears, with water. Fats hydrate, not water. And the best source of absorbable water is as nature intended, as a component of food. Cooked foods are dehydrated food, for the most part, and consuming water on it's own will have no active ions, electrolytes or minerals bound with nutrients; making it only 10% cellularly utilizable. This helps explain why people who consume large amounts of water still display signs of dehydration and why if they don't drink constantly their feeling of dehydration is amplified. Plain water will also leech nutrients from the body, dilute gastric juices and stress the kidneys if over-"hydrating".

Gratefully, water in food, raw and unheated is full of water, often as high as 90% and is 92-100% absorbable. And nothing lubricates like great raw, healthy fats.

Well

Remember that most black and green teas (any tea with caffeine) have very astringent properties and are irritating to the nerve endings. They effectively dry out one's nerve endings if consumed in excess and can leach water from cells. In that sense, tea can be more damaging than coffee when consumed excessively. This astringent quality is why a cup of hot tea pairs well with an oily meal. Excess caffeine is very aging and drying to the skin and the cortisol spikes will assist in building belly fat, among other things.

Caffeine can wreak havoc with cortisol and blood sugar levels and is neurotoxic in high quantities so by all means go for Kukicha (twig), Bancha, Genmaicha, White, or other low-caffeine or non-fermented green teas. Individuals with mold/yeast/fungus sensitivity may have problems with all fermented beverages. Always eat a protein/fat containing morsel along with tea to mitigate a rapid rise in cortisol and blood sugar. Bleached tea bags and paper cups contain dioxin so be mindful when ordering tea at the coffee shop.

Caffeine Blues by Stephen Cherniske is really eye-opening.

Dictionary.com has adapted their definitions:

1. possessing or enjoying good health or a sound and vigorous mentality: a healthy body; a healthy mind.

2. pertaining to or characteristic of good health, or a sound and vigorous mind: a healthy appearance; healthy attitudes.

(These are the definitions Wianno is talking about: people are healthy, food is not "healthy" because it has no living body.)

3.	conducive to good health; healthful: healthy recreations.

(This is the definition people are usually talking about when they say "healthy food.")

Now, a comment on the original article: I would guess that another factor on fluoride content in tea -- at least if the study was measuring brewed tea -- is the fact that when fluoridated tap water is boiled, the fluoride is concentrated.
