Rumor has it there are many people still living underground there, plus they have gardens and lighting that lasts a looooong time.

Upon her marriage to the Polish king Boleslaw the Modest she purportedly threw her royal signet into the Maramures salt mines in Hungary, only to have it reappear in yes, the newly discovered salt deposits of Poland. That generous gesture was finally recompensed in 1999 when she was canonized by the late pope John Paul II. There is a chapel in the mines dedicated in her name.

The mines are known for their curative microclimate characterized by bacteriological purity and saturation with beneficial minerals. Treatments focus on respiratory, metabolic diseases, as well as allergies, skin diseases and such. Those particular chambers are 445 feet under.

In the middle ages the salt from the mines apparently was used as legal tender; something we might suggest to Hank Paulson, - would be cheaper than forking over $700 billion, -but that's fait accompli.

Throughout the mine are beautifully carved statues. We were told that the miners took to carving mined-out sections in their off hours. It truly has to be seen to be believed!

I'd never heard of it until a week ago when I visited it myself udring a trip to the Pacific Northwest. It is a truly amazing (and frequently disgusting) story, mainly about the handling of sewage in a city built on mud flats, and one bad planning decision after another leading to the modern Seattle of today. Some things never change. LOL
