What make them safer than the other is the rate of the plastic degrading into the toxics we are concerned about. And some are made out of more harmful materials.

I remember Dr Mercola recommend type 2,4 and 5 plastic if we have to use one. I found myself have greatly reduced my plastic use and avoid many many products using plastic packaging, and yet i also find myself impossible to completely avoid using plastic of any kind and shape, living in urban area.

To list some of plastic i regretably used:

computer, speaker, water filter jug, pen, personal care products, food packaging, detergent container.

How to stop all these plastic! Go live in a jungle i guess..?or an isolated village..make some ceramic computer already .. i need computer..n ceramic modem? hah!

It is quite sad that after having this post we can see Dr Mercola's products use plastic containers. But i guess there is nothing else can be done for this system of food packaging?

I traded in one of my old Nalgene's for a new one, at a local outdoor store that was promoting their exchange. I have to admit, I do love the ease of use and durability of the Nalgene bottle! It's great not worrying about dropping and breaking it, or denting it so it doesn't stand up straight anymore like my stainless steel :-) . But then I don't really want to support the manufacture of plastic products, and also wonder about what they replaced the BPA with. Any thoughts or feedback for me? Thanks!

Okay, but I think that many of us would appreciate some kind of empirical evidence supporting Dr. Mercola's statement. Or would that be asking too much? Furthermore, is he saying the mineral level is not even DECREASED by this process?

And while it is true that our drinking water may not be our "primary source of minerals," yet according to some surveys I've read people who consume primarily soft water---which has no minerals to speak of---are more prone to heart disease and/or heart attacks.

However, how can we safely allow small children to use glass. My 6 yr old and even my 10 year can be quite clumsy. Are there other materials that can be safely substituted for the glass? I bought laptop lunch boxes for my children this school year (www.laptoplunches.com) a "bento" box system that uses safe plastics. As stated from the company: "we manufacture our lunch containers here in California using plastics (polypropylene and polyethylene) that are FDA-approved for food use. We do not use any binding agents or plasticizers in the process. We do not use any materials that are suspected carcinogens or endocrine disrupters." The company devotes a page to "The Truth About Plastics."They also sell stainless steel water containers. Does anyone have suggestions about what to use "everyday" at home that is not so susceptible to breakage as glass is?

I must atke exception with your point as most of our soil is depleted of minerals and so much of our food is mineral deficient. It is well known that the soil east of the Mississippi has been known to be depleted of selenium since the government put out a paper on this subject in 1936!

The best source of minerals is in glacial "milk". This is the water that comes from the glaciers that release minerals from the abrasive action against the rock as the glaciers slowly move down the mountains. There are at least 5 or more very mineral rich nations which rely on glacial milk and these people are so much healthier than we are!

Plants can only take in the minerals that are present in the soil. It can be dificult to replenish all the essential nutrients we need. Considering there are at least 90 minerals and nutrients essential to our needs, just what soil do you know of that has them all? Even most of the glaciers only have between 60-75 of these essential nutrients.

Vitamins come from our foods, but not so when it comes to minerals. This is easily proven by a simple analysis of one's soil.

I buy a colloidal mineral supplement which supplies me with 70 of the essential minerals my body needs to stay healthy. I also supplement with the ones I know I am deficient in. And I do NOT go by the FDA's RDA as these are only recommended daily allowances and not the optimal amounts we need. My joints feel better, my eyesight is better, and I feel like i have more energy since I began this supplementation a bit over a year ago. I also have noticed I do not have quite as much gry hair as I once did! Minerals are truly the link to the "fountain of youth" since most people, especially Americans are so mineral deficient. And we are so mineral deficient because of bad farming practices over the past 100 or so years.

Minutes after my boy was born he was placed in position to breast feed. This was in Calgary Alberta Canada, year 2000. Is this not common place everywhere?

He breast fed until he decided he didn't want to at 20 months. It was difficult at times to find a place to feed him, but many places now offer "family rest rooms" with chairs and safe play areas for additional children. Why any one would feel formula is easier is beyond my grasp. Breast milk is ready all the time, the perfect mix and temperature. Any potential hazards from drinking bad breast milk are far exceeded by all the potential benefits, including the bonding process.

It seems no foods are safe, just safer. Well water is probably best -mostly.... It is always a "better than" game with the status of our over populated world....

What we truly need is a "perfect" form of population control, and perhaps all the chemicals will end up being just that.

I went to the website that you cited, www.filterwater.com and here is what THEY said:

"Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis are a few, but it is something to consider when selecting a home water filtration system. First, it is a slow filtration process, commonly used in under-sink or point-of-use systems. Second, it produces water that is fairly acidic and aggressive, with lower pH, and close to distilled (i.e. a flat taste) - that is because RO membrane removes beneficial minerals along with contaminants."

So if they are indeed right, then yes, reverse osmosis DOES remove much-needed minerals from our drinking water. Which makes one wonder WHY Dr. Mercola recommends reverse osmosis.

Five years ago I had all the metal fillings removed from my mouth. Six months later when I suddenly started exhibiting the signs of Environmental Illness, I began researching potential causes and was shocked to learn that my new "safe" fillings contained BPA. Note: I'm not claiming that the BPA caused the illness, but I do believe it was a significant contributing factor - and yes, removal of the old fillings may also have contributed.

Talk to your dentists and ask about the plastics being used for your new fillings or dentures, and request the MSDS BEFORE you have any work done.
