EVERYONE should have them! They don't require much space and are wonderful at removing insects from the yard and garden... just make sure they don't get into the garden until the plants are 6 inches tall or so. And never let them near ripe tomatoes, they'll eat them ALL!

Our chickens, both meat birds and laying hens, are locked in coops with large outdoor runs (5 sq ft per bird) when we are NOT home (roaming dogs like to eat them), but we let them out whenever possible. They never fail to wander back to their coop come night fall so they can be easily secured. Rounding them up isn't that hard either (with 2 people and a dog). Our chickens have 24/7 access to food/water which is checked daily but only needs to be filled once a week. (Food must be regulated with the meat birds or they will get very obese). Our meat birds eat a 'game bird' formula feed from the local feed store as it does not have any antibiotics or nasty stuff and is nearly identical in protein and fat %. The egg hens get a commerical 'natural' feed as it contains the necessary vitamins and minerals to keep their bodies in 'laying' shape. I've had the 'natural' feed analysized and it lives up to its claims in all 'detectable' aspects.

Aside from antibiotics and lack of access to the outdoors, the butchering process concerns me greatly. I have butchered many chickens and it is in no way a 'clean' job. One slip of the knife and you have a mess. I take my time, only butchering a dozen or so in a weekend. When I think about this job done on a massive scale, I cringe. No wonder commerical chicken is laden with bacteria!

If Tyson is not using antibiotics in the feed, that would make them a bit better company than the ones that DO use antibiotics in their feed. I read the points you made about Roxarsone, but that's another issue.

I started wondering how a trusted local grocery store, that has started stocking beautiful looking 'organic' produce was able to sell big bags of rice at half the price of the local grain stores. On a hunch, I started asking questions of managers. The bags said USA grown and distributed by the Grupa Co. Was this a GMO product?

They claimed to not know but referred me to the Grupa company saying by law, they had to tell me. Following that thread I went online I learned a lot I do not have time for here,

My point is, I learned GMO foods carry a 5 digit code like the 4 digit code used at grocery check-outs. See small sticky fruit labels and similar on bagged or clear produce containers.

I have been doing a lot of checking and have found these 5 digit codes on huge amounts of produce, and often on things that are labeled 'organic'. I learned they get away with this because of not using spray pesticides. A number of these products have been produced by the same company that produces Round-up. Are we concerned that we are eating produce that the bugs will not eat?

These GMO's are everywhere, WalMart, Sams Club, Costco, 'Whole Foods', Sunflower Foods and just about every grocery store I've been in, including my little local neighborhood market. They look great and have improved the taste radically. Who wouldn't choose the beautiful large blemish-less pieces over normal products. The grains are the same and have infiltrated all my local grain products stores, some coming from over seas.

We are in big trouble, more than we know, as they are claiming patent rights on seeds! Which means our farmers cannot carry seeds over year to year as they have always done. Worst case, the GMO companies will be in control of the worlds food supplies. Heaven help us!!

If any one has more info please write!!

But forcing people to die at 85 would do nothing to accomplish that objective.

But Canada has done wonders to get our average age at death a couple years better than the USA has. We are speculating that this is because we have 'free' medical care and a shortage of doctors. About 40% of us do not have a family doctor and can't find one willing to take us on on other than an emergency basis. Our doctors appear to be expecting us to look after ourselves.

But Canadian statistics are revealing. People who live on the west coast live longer despite the fact that food there costs more. People on the Prairie provinces and Newfoundland/Labrador are shorter lived, In the northern territories are much shorter lived.

We have a pocket of very poor cardiac health, high diabetes, and cancer all within one county that has the lowest cost of vegetables in Canada. (Chatham-Kent). There is no clear correlation between prices of food elsewhere.

There does appear to be a link between the habits people have of going for long walks in winter. West coasters go walking all year round, Prairie residents, far northern and Chatham-Kent people do not.

Chatham-Kent and Newfoundland people share one situation. Winter roads are often covered with ice and seniors in particular do not venture out one them walking. But neither area has great dietary habits.

Summer walking habits do not appear to differentiate the areas.

Statistics were pulled together carefully but by a health group out to prove something.

In the acute case, it is a matter of treat or you do not eat. And you might choose to not eat in either case.

But low level systematic treatment is the fastest way to develop antibiotic resistant strains of any organism.

Acute level treatment at 2 weeks of age for broiler chickens has proven its value in eliminating disease from the barn for the rest of the flock's growing period, and leaves undetectable levels of antibiotic in the meat when slaughtered at 11 to 13 weeks. This is the way safety is being measured. Even if the procedure is developing antibiotic resistant strains, the testing method is just looking at residual antibiotic in the meat.

We get a similar reduction of pathogen infection by using copper sulphate in the birds' waterers, and no development of antibiotic resistant organisms. But any organism that survives this copper sulphate treatment will also survive on copper doorknobs and brass plumbing fixtures.

Testing methods for copper sulphate in the flesh of poultry does not appear to be widespread, so this can be used even to week 9 out of 11.

Organic farmers are allowed to use copper sulphate, in place of antibiotics. And of course so too are conventional farmers.
