There is apparently a critical link between taste and body weight.
I have similar problem with obesity, caused probably by NEUROPATHY, which I have got due to a sever infection IN my SPINE and using the medicine GABAPENTIN. Before I started use it, I weighted 60kg (132 lbs) and after some months my weight went up to 158.4 lbs and after one year I weight (also now)176 lbs or more, my weight is changing, but not very much.

I have this problem, that ANYTHING works probably because my damaged nervous system. I stopped take Gabapentin - but too late, I am still fat (I am 155 cm tall, means SHORT). I am not able to exercise, I hardly can go or stand, I use my 2 legs and 2 hands to go upstairs, I am not able to use only my legs. What I have to do? What can Dr Mercola say to me?

I do about the same like You Patty D. Men - if I was "normal", I would go down in weight by using "Fat diet", i.e. 1g protein to 2.5 gram fat(animal)to 0.5-0.8 gram carbo. I know many people who went 18 kg down on this diet. Do you want know more, go to http://homodiet.netfirms.com/ . If you could Swedish, there is also a blog of a Swedish doctor, who discover this method as well and lost 18 kg never being hungry. If I do not go more up than I do, it is also because I use this proportion in my diet, but unfortunately sometimes I cannot avoid more carbo than 0,8g (for my wanted weight I should eat only 60 gram protein, ca 150 gram fat and only ca 50 gram carbo per day) and immediately my weight go up. At least read about this diet (called optimal nutrition) on the site I gave you. God luck, Anna

I just had my leptin levels drawn and even though I am considered obese on the BMI scale, I have quite low leptin levels, which I have heard can cause obesity because the body doesnt burn fat like it should. I do have a lot of endocrine disfunction (no adrenals, history of Cushing's). Is there any natural way to get my leptin higher, but not too high? I workout with a trainer 5x per week and still struggle with weight loss even when my calories are around 1200 a day. Any ideas are appreciated.

These gave energy and cheap calories to the poor. The Chinese are not fat yet they've eaten rice forever. The Lord's prayer mentions "the daily bread," then there are the potatoes, yams breadfruit, maize made into flours, - all utilized for thousands of years. It was the primitive man, the hunter that was inferior mentally, socially, and probably physically.

On the other hand, food is not all it's cut out to be. There have been saints and yogics who have abstained from all foods for months or years. Something else must have sustained them. Man does not live by bread alone, - or proteins or carbs or fats for that matter.

It is great to hear some helpful comments from Dr Mercola on leptin. I have been testing my own leptin for some 2 years but am currently testing quite a big proportion of my patients and getting interesting results fitting in with the clinical picture and the health challenges. I look forward to hearing more. I am starting my first website (from Australia) www.drjoanruth.com -so far a blank page- on "Simply Health" spirit, soul and body. Ahead is much writing! Dr. Joan-Ruth

I am as well. I find myself eating to the point that my stomach hurts so bad I do not even want to roll forward to get out of my chair...and yet I want more.

Your frustration with all these different approaches is understandable because you don't want theory nor science nor stories about another skinny minnie who probably did not have THAT big a weight problem in the first place. God knows most who complain about their weight would be better off seeing to someone else's welfare rather than being so self-aborbed about losing another 10 or 12 lbs and if they were NOT so self-absorbed they might not have gained the weight in the first place. If that hurts someone's feelings, tough.

I do not have a solution for you because I do not have a solution for myself. The only thing I have finally discovered is that my hunger seems to be in my throat even when i have eaten to the point that the walls of my stomach hurt. I finally suspected that eating is my own version of drinking a six pack or getting high to get away from my problems. Trouble is, my problem is my self image, LOL, and so eating is like a slow form of self-flagellation and punishment.

Now, I do not have a solution for YOU...nor does anyone else here. What you are seeing is that everybody has a slightly different metabolism and respond differently to foods and additives. What you say you are doing IS helpful, but perhaps you are like me in one way? I have simply been lying to myself about the number of calories I am eating because I could not go to sleep unless I was miserably full.

Brown and wild rice with grilled chicken thrown in with some Smartbutter and enough parmesean cheese for a little flavor sounds acceptable to most folks, I think. My doc approves of it and that is all wonderful ....but not when I am eating the entire pot for dinner.

I wonder......cushioning fat or smooth muscle?

When I am closer to my ideal weight I definitely look scraggy around the neck and upper chest, some of which is due to the small amount of exercise I can tolerate. (In MS, heating the core body temperature by more than half a degree can impact badly on Chronic fatigue levels)

A system like Callanetics helps strengthen the large muscle groups and makes them longer and leaner rather than chunky and bulgy.

Something to consider?

Weigh loss through illness reduces both the fat supplies and the amount of lean muscle tissue.

Hi Springolife

Your comments about yourself and your Mum bring me to conclude that you are making the mistake of basing your nutrition on calorie counting rather than eating the correct amount of protein/fat/carbs for your own needs. If your ancestory is from Northern Europe that would mean a large amount of fat/protein as the winters have always been long and harsh here and as Dr Weston Price's studies have shown people from these climates need a large quantity of the fat soluble vitamins (ADK&E) in their diets to survive and thrive in the harsh climates. The beauty of a high fat diet is a great feeling of satiety throughout the day as the fat/protein lines the stomach and induces a feeling of wellbeing. If one feels hungry it's a sign that our body is NOT getting the correct nutrition it requires. Being constantly hungry is actually very bad as it encourages the body to store fat instead of burning it. Dr Mercola's colleague Dr Ron Rosedale is a very lucid expert in this area and it was by carefully studying his ideas on this taboo (fat) subject that I myself finally got over the mental blocks that we ALL have in connection with consuming large amounts of fat as part of a satisfying, healthy, never be hungry diet. Forget about being constantly hungry and try increasing your intake of good fats. They are also very good anti-fungal foods which is another huge mistake with the high grain/sugar pyramid which is totally about what the food manufacturers want to sell and has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with achieving your health/weight/fitness goals. Believe me they will all come together if you can break the mental anti-fat taboos and eat according to your real needs. Calorie counting is just another part of the diet food industry which always eventually leads to ill health and paradoxically weight gain. God did not design us to be constantly hungry and once you get the hang of a high fat/protein diet you never will be again.
