I just finished browsing through all 299 comments that have been made at this time and it pleases me to see so many people who have chimed in from the viewpoint of the Weston A. Price Foundation. I too count myself as a WAPF adherent, and I would echo the shock expressed by several others at Dr. Mercola's departure from WAPF advice on cod liver oil. On one level I applaud the good doctor's willingness to stand up for his own personal conclusions even when they differ (quite drastically) from what others might believe. However, I think Dr. Mercola has crossed a line here. Words fail me to express my personal disappointment...but that's just my opinion.

The reason I wanted to add a comment here is that the Price Foundation's Spring 2009 issue of Wise Traditions has just come out. (Wise Traditions is their quarterly journal, for those who might not know.) As one previous poster anticipated, Sally Fallon did indeed devote an entire article to making a point-by-point rebuttal to Dr. Mercola's revised position on cod liver oil. It is very much worth one's while to get a copy of the journal to read what she has to say. Certainly I am biased, but I think that she soundly defends the WAPF position against Dr. Mercola's misstatements and mistaken (even if well-meaning) conclusions.

While I do agree with what Dr. Mercola said in one of his replies on this topic--namely that Weston Price enthusiasts tend to be dogmatic about the value of cod liver oil and are not open to new information about it--Sally Fallon quite simply makes a better argument for her position. That's my two cents.

Peace,

He calls ‘em the way he sees ‘em and lets the chips fall where they may. Thank God he’s capable of updating his thinking as new evidence becomes available. My family and I have enjoyed better health and benefited GREATLY from his advice so it's hard for me to read some of these comments. I very much understand some people's frustration about having to deal with new information. But to put this into perspective, change is a necessity in life and the ability to integrate true change is among the hardest challenges to the human consciousness.

Collectively, we’ve more than doubled our lifespan over the last several millennia precisely because we were able to adopt better ways of doing things. If we can't learn and adapt to newer info we risk the consequences and illnesses that result from our calcified viewpoints.

Personally, I am EXTREMELY GRATEFUL to Dr. Mercola for his untiring efforts in bringing us the cutting edge info that’s hard to find elsewhere. Like all trailblazers, he risks his reputation and livelihood by challenging the status quo of Big Pharma who depends upon an ignorant populace to perpetuate their business model. For them, it's not about true HEALING which would threaten their profits. They opt instead to keep us addicted to expensive, long-term maintenance regimens that only suppress symptoms.

And we can’t forget that this good man offers the benefits of his professional insights and thousands of webpages FOR FREE(!) Yes, he sells some products (many of which are the best available) to help defray the cost of providing so much info, yet many of his recommendations offer no benefit to him. So I can't begrudge anyone who manages to turn a profit by helping so many people – that’s exactly how it's supposed to work in a free, capitalist society.

THANK YOU Dr. Mercola!

I'm from the Netherlands and here in Europe we have a brand called Solgar that produces vitamin D3 tablets in dry form, no vitamin A in there at all! Would you recommend these? and would I have to take them in conjunction with a fatty meal in order to absorb well?

I love being outside and I do not use sunscreen to block the natural vitamin D. Any suggestions?

Seriously. I am SO glad it's not recommended anymore and I'm glad I don't have to take it anymore. Friends have all raved to me about how "good for you" the Carlson cod liver oil is, over many years, and I never noticed any benefit to taking it. Plus, it's expensive. So it's great news I don't have to feel guilty about not taking it. Heck, who knows, I may even feel better stopping taking it! Good grief.

It appears that there are many triggers and causes of migraine. I get optic migraines, which was pretty scary when I had my first one because I'd never heard of such a thing. Quite by accident, I found that mine are caused by a salt imbalance. When I feel one coming on I immediately drink salt water and it passes quickly. If I don't drink the salt water, it takes hours to pass and worsens.

Your blanket attack on all cod liver oil sems to say that you have been influenced by someone or something that seeks to squelch the use of a true super food.
