Crack the window so it can escape??!! Are you kidding me? ROFL! Talk like that diminishes my hope for mankind! Now I don't think mercury is good for you, but why then, because coal has been burned for a long long time, haven't MORE people been diagnosed with autism than there are? I was putting saline in my eyes everyday as a contact lens user, that was preserved with thimerosol, why haven't more people gotten autism from that? I've read EVERYTHING out there and spent thousands of dollars looking for "cures" for my daughter, and I will tell every one of you-- Nobody knows anything. Especially if they make money looking like they do. Nobody knows why. Poisons in our environment? Cause some people some problems. Nobody knows why. Vaccines? Cause some people some problems. Nobody knows why. Mothers, only God knows, and YOU are entitled to inspiration for YOUR family. Read everything, learn, then remember that they (the doctors and researchers) don't know why YOUR child has autism- but you can, through prayer, weed out what does not apply to you and discover what does, (that dr.'s may not even have thought of.) Only mothers will cure autism in their own child. We work, play, pray, over and over, day after day. We know our children, we are their experts, their angels. But we get tired and lonely and want to be comforted and hear some truth. Mothers here's the truth: Only you will know, through the spirit of revelation, what your child needs, and YOU CAN DO IT! You must. Look to no one else as an "expert", you are it! Self reliance is the new mantra of the millenium, so get down on your knees and get some. Don't ask "professionals" to solve this one for you, they have no idea what they're looking at. After years of medical school, they gather each summit, each conference sitting around tables scratching their heads and . . ."Crack a window so it can escape." More reverence by the medical community, for the wisdom of mothers is in order.

Thank you for echoing my comments earlier on, Martienne -- people with autism are all different and they may or may not have a laundry list of symptoms. It is not a 1-size-fits-all disorder, and it may even be caused by multiple factors. Therefore it does no good to get parents scared or feeling guilty because they haven't tried the latest "cure" or expensive procedure. Frankly, I'd love for my teenage son to go onto a no-sugar, no-dairy, no-wheat diet, but since he lives with his father (who pooh-poohs all alternative med remedies), this is an impossibility. Not to mention it would be excruciatingly difficult to radically change the diet of a 17-yr-old boy with autism, taking away all the foods he loves the most. I do the best I can and try to educate my son about nutrition, setting an example. The other factor that has been overlooked is the exercise component. I find my son's symptoms lesson noticeably when we are into a good walking regimen. In the winter we go to the local mall, which opens at 7 a.m. for walkers.

While vaccines are very suspect. We forget how programmable our brains are in early life development from audio and visual input. (see studies on language development of feral children)

Could it be?..Another possibility is the way we edit commercials and TV shows..a shot is no longer than 2 seconds long. The style of editing before 1990s was not so quick paced which is around the time the upshot in cases occured. Could it be that attention spans and brain dysfunction is a "programmed" result from this type of input?

Greetings everyone. I am so interested in the terrorism of vaccines. Yes, I had them and yes, I allowed my children to have them because I was ill informed. I am no longer ill informed. Thanks to Dr. Mercola and a Dr. Horowitz who accidentally found some records in the Library of Congress years ago when he was doing extensive research there. Those documents he found told a terrible tale of plans for vaccines.

I saw my husband get a flu shot this year (he does it every year because his doctor says he has to) and immediately, he had problems with memory. It was frightening. I give him supplements to help him with better health and I am sneaking in something that I found that slowly removes toxins from the body.

I am very sure that the mercury and other ingredients in the vaccines play a role in autism and other problems. We cannot be blind. Consider this... the Jews in Germany were tricked into gathering for their vaccinations, and then they were killed. It makes you wonder who made up this vaccine thing.

I got an EMF detector (gaussmeter) for Christmas. I'm very thankful that the higher emf areas are NOT in any of our bedrooms. The foyer is really high, but we don't even go in and out that door. The rest of the house was only bad when I placed it on a few of the outlets. But, bedrooms were great!

They only cost about $30!

Every situation is different, and most articles don't address that. I have a daughter who, at 5 years old, was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (moderate Autism). However, she also has a rare chromosome disorder which presents itself very similar to Down Syndrome. Now that she's 7 I don't see hardly any of the autistic traits which gave her that PDD-NOS diagnosis. I would imagine now they would only say "developmental delay". I tried GF/CF for quite a when she was first diagnosed, but it had no effect on her. She was found to have milk and wheat allergies as an infant, but she no longer has them.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that not ALL kids benefit from these types of treatments, which is the opposite of what this article is saying. Autism can mean so many different things, and I would be willing to bet that there are a lot of kids like my daughter who don't actually have Autism but maybe have an undiagnosed chromosomal disorder. Also, treatments help many of the undesirable behaviors, but honestly, when I see kids who were "cured" of Autism...they are still autistic. They're just better. And they're not even "cured" because if their "treatment" stops their undesirable behaviors return.

One more thing...articles like this tend to make parents look really bad, because most people can't afford to do all of the treatments which are the trend right now. Autism used to be the "refrigerator mom syndrome" and it looks like it's returning to that. When people find out my daughter is autistic the first thing they ask is what all treatments I'm doing with her. When I say I'm not, they look at me like I'm evil or something. I'll tell you what I AM doing. I'm NOT WORKING so I can give my daughter an education at home that the public school system wouldn't give her, and for that reason I can't afford fancy treatments! Priorities.

I agree with those who are skeptical about the 1-answer-fits-all approach to "curing" autism. My son was born with autism 17 years ago. We know this from signs and cues he exhibited in his first weeks of life. We have tried diets, supplements, and umpteen therapies to lessen his symptoms, many of which were helpful with teaching him appropriate behavior but none of which changed an iota of his autism.

It's pretty clear by now to any of us who have lived with autism for years that there are many different kinds of autism, brought on at varying ages due to varying factors. I believe studies will soon show that in cases like the McCarthy boy's, he did not have autism at all but was experiencing severe allergen reactions that brought about autistic-like symptoms. The danger in Ms. McCarthy's and others' tell-all "cure" stories is that they create false hope and beliefs in parents of children like mine whose autism is deeply embedded in their brain wiring and not "curable" through diet or heavy metal cleansing or EMF reduction. Perhaps these things can slightly reduce symptoms. That's all.

Years ago I read about how a doctor named Perkingee identified sensory-processing cells in the mid-brain (now called Perkingee cells) which form in the middle stages of gestation. In children with infantile autism, there are a dearth of these cells, causing their brain dendrites to mis-connect. What I would like to know is if this theory is still viable, and if so, if the medical community is actively researching WHY some children lack these sensory processing cells. Is it a genetic fluke, or is it toxins like mercury, lead, or other poisons in our ecosystem?

Dr. Mercola, I implore you to distinguish between the various causalities of autism in your posts about autism "cures." It would benefit us all if we could begin using different terminology to identify the different types of autism, as we have done with labels like Asperger's syndrome for one high-functioning type. Thank you.

It might be well to consider that each person has a physical body that is unique and special in more ways than we can practically catalog. Now this is referring to the physiological measurable chemical and other properties of the biological body.

Step beyond the body and we have many environmental situations that are again very complex and quite often unique to the individual. There are so many subtle variations to the environment that we again find that the micro level is so variable.

Next beyond these, above, is the spiritual level and the thought level of being. Many may say that this is not important or doses not have an affect or even exist. This is their choice and in that their limitation.

Such limitations are their choice.

Now It appears that these all interact in ways that science can not capture and prove. This is out side of the box on scientific thinking for many and that is also a choice. There are many more categories that can be added as sub categories or major categories affecting the physical body. These is quite possible an infinite number of subdivisions.

THE ABOVE BEING PROLOGUE WE THEN HAVE TO STEP INTO THE REALM OF UNDERSTANDING PERHAPS.

The electromagnetic affects upon the physical body at many levels are to be considered. The atoms are electromagnetic in nature, the electrons orbit around the nucleus held in orbit by electromagnetic forces. This is a balanced stable situation for the most part. Now what if these atoms are bombarded with external electromagnetic forces? It would seem that there might be an affect upon the stability of these atoms. Now on a limited low level of exposure these atoms may return to a stable situation when the external force is removed, however, under a more constant exposure could changes happen? Me thinks this is very possible.

Electricity is produced by a magnetic field passing through metal, as in a generator. Think on this out of apace.

I suffered a health collapse several years ago, which turned out to be due to exposure to "dirty electricity." I was fortunate to learn about this invisible pollution, and be coached through remediation of our home environment, by Dave Stetzer, creator of the Stetzer meter (the first and only meter that lets you know just how much electrical pollution is in an electrical circuit) and filters (that filter the health-damaging frequencies out of your building circuits).
