the geologic column which is used to bolster evolution is nothing but a theory in a textbook. It has no empirical validation whatsoever and is based on circular reasoning at its core. It already makes up which fossils are "supposed" to be in which layer out of its own dogmatic evolutionary explanations, and then dates those layers based on which age their "supposed" fossils are in... then when we find tons of fossils not in the "proper" layers and other conditions violating these assumptions they are given excuses and are 'outliers'

the geologic column is theoretically 100 miles when in reality the longest is only 16 miles... Only 1% of the world's surface area has all the layers of the column, which is only 3, and even then it doesn't fully adhere to the model

With every passing year, science makes strides toward a more complete understanding of our origins. And with every passing year, thiests become more strident in their defense of the indefensible.

How many more centuries will this religious plague stalk humanity? How many more years of unfulfilled promises and prophecy? How many more years of magical thinking must we endure before the light of science finally burns away the shadows of superstition?

Look folks, Jesus is not coming back. Man created God in his own image. It's time to evolve.

I can't believe that anyone with ANY intelligence and eyes to see the intricate world around us would believe in evolution or a big bang theory. It has only been the past couple hundred years that "science" told us there was evolution. And "science" keeps changing its mind. Four years ago I was at the Natural History Museum in Wash. D.C. and they showed a movie on evolution - suggesting that we all came from rats. I was very upset seeing this lie that they were telling people. A couple of years (more or less) later they had a sign at that same exhibit saying something like " scientific research changing and previous views have changed......." The Bible never changes! Science, archaeology , and history have proven and are constantly proving the validity and reliability of the Bible. Why would you want to think that you are descended from a rat or a monkey??? Or that it would even be possible. As for me, I am descended from humans - Adam and Eve, made by the hand of God. And that was about 6,000 years ago when EVERYTHING was created by the most intelligent, awesome God. "Something made out of nothing" doesn't make any sense. And the awesomeness of the universe and all forms of life CANNOT come out of nothing. IMPOSSIBLE. By the way, dinosaurs did not live "millions" of years ago. There are references to them living in Bible times and references to them in legends of England and China - dragons. Dragons were dinosaurs.

One of the earlier attempts at dating the earth based on biblical reference, and which helped popularize the idea of a 6,000 year old earth, was done by James Ussher in the 17th century (check out "Ussher chronology" on Wikipedia), in which he calculated creation to be in 4004 BC. But for people who actually believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Bible is true, it's difficult to simply dismiss that date and accept the claim that earth is billions of years old. Because if you believe Jesus and the Bible, consider that Jesus said in Mark 10:6, "But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female" (KJV). Jesus is clearly saying that man and woman were on planet earth from the beginning of creation, not after millions of years of unsupervised evolution. It makes no sense to try and suggest Jesus actually meant there were billions of years from the creation of the universe before "male and female" arrived (rather than their simultaneous appearance with the beginning ~4000 years earlier as inferred from scripture). If we could compress the assumed 15-18 billion year secular age of the universe into a one year timescale that spans from midnight January 1 2008 through midnight January 1 2009, it would be like Jesus speaking at exactly midnight January 1 2009 about an event that had occurred 8 seconds earlier (December 31 2008, 11:59:52 PM) and saying that it had occurred "at the beginning" of 2008. And that's plain nonsense.

Twelve years in some of the strictest Catholic schools known to man, gives me enough evidence that science rocks! In between beatings, even the "brothers" admitted the bIBLE is not to be taken literally, but figuratively.

So many books in the library, and so many only read one!

On a lighter note, concerning picture #2, a friend of mine in northern VT was eating a bowl of fresh- picked wild blueberries when she noticed one of the blueberries had legs. It was a bug that looked just like a blueberry. If it wasn't for her keen eyesight--gulp.

Young earth? Who knows; but 10's of thousands of varves and 8-12,000 tree rings can't be wrong. The important issues are really: how did all this tremendous biodiversity originate? Top-down theory makes most sense since mutations (or any other proposed macroevolutionary driving mechanism) have been been found wanting. Intelligent design seems to make the most sense to a semi-intelligent mind like mine! Enjoy the Earth and each other - with respect and love. Dennis in Vancouver

The best scientific evidence out there that this earth was created instantly are the polonium halos found in mica. With a half life of 3.5 minutes, the only explanation for their existence would be "He spake, and it was".

Beautiful article. In all kindness, the scriptures give no indication that the world is only 6,000 years old. This is an unfortunate dogma that has been carried on. It was 6,000 years ago that God intervened with the creation of Adam and Eve and the dispensation of restoration, but there clearly had to have been something going on long before this event in order for God to initiate a restoration. It is an amazing subject of study. Let's be kind, we all suffer from some arena of ignorance, the adventure is in discovery.

The earth is not millions of years old. Around 6,000-10,000 is more realistic estimation.
