Dr. Mercola - cell towers are everywhere, on top of hospitals, hotels, apartment rooftops, municipal buildings, church steeples.... What is probably 1000X worse that having a cell tower on top of a school rooftop or somewhere on the property is the EMF that the kids are getting from sitting in front of a computer or watching television. All of the wireless carriers make sure that the cellular antennas are transmitting significantly below the FCC requirements are.

This is a totally irresponsible and reprehensible comment, truly demonstrating "a dangerous ignorance." The phone companies chose those frequencies because they were allocated by the FCC, and by international treaty under the ITU, and because they work. It was not a deliberate intent to cause cancer. Why? So doctors could get rich treating all the cancer patients?

The typical cell site transmitter puts out about 15 watts, of which about 8 watts actually gets to the antenna due to line loss. This is about twice what a CB puts out, by the way. The antennas used are highly directional in the vertical plane and aimed at the horizon. Very little energy is radiated straight down, so the signal at the base of the tower is no more than it is half a mile away.

The level of RF radiation in a schoolyard is certainly less than one would receive from the cell phone held 1/2-inch away from one's brain. Definitely far less than what the typical FRS/GMRS walkie-talkie puts out. Maybe even less than what you receive from that computer screen sitting 15 inches away from your face.

Perhaps you need to: 1.) Unplug your computer. 2.) Take it out to your front yard. 3.) Put a "for sale" sign on it. 4.) Drop your cell phone in a recycling bin somewhere. 5.) Move to an island out in the middle of the ocean where there are no radios, cell phones, and no electricity. 6.) Stay out of the sunlight. The sun is the most powerful generator of RF radiation that there is.

Let's get real, Folks. Most schools aren't short of funds for education; They're just obsessed with being day-care centers, team-sports centers, and liberal-indoctrination centers. Education (which is ostensibly their purpose) is not in itself that expensive. Most of their funds seem to be spent on sports facilities. Sports - even team sports, which are so expensive to support - are not necessarily a bad thing, but they should not be a required component of a school system. The proper mission of schools is or should be basic education, which is not in itself very expensive; But public schools are not fulfilling that mission because of their concentration on the expensive extra-curricular activities, and that is why it is becoming ever more difficult to find a literate person in modern America. Change the emphasis from entertainment of kids and parents to simple education and you will quickly solve the funding problems while providing America with a literate population in the near future. Hospitals and Churches also would have few funding problems if they were intelligently managed, and readers of this newsletter should be uniquely aware of the mis-directed energies typical of hospitals, but I'll leave that topic to others with more time and patience.

Excuse me, did he say parents are up from 7 AM? Our five year old granddaughter has to be at the school by 7:30 AM. We are up at 6:00 to get her there. And we often don't turn out the lights until after 1:00 AM. Public schools are run by idiots, and I am NOT referring to the teachers! Keep speaking up when there is an issue that affects your child! Do not give up!

Well, I don't advise anyone to spend gobs of time every day with a cell phone held up next to their skull. It's the proximity that can do the damage to your brain. However, I have been a broadcast engineer for over 48 years, dealing primarily with AM and FM transmitters with power levels up to 50,000 watts. and I can say that the comparatively miniscule RF output of a cell site is not a radiation hazard whatsoever. The EPA has established limits on RF exposure, and these are applied to cell sites as well as broadcast transmitting facilities. I even helped in the establishing of these standards, as one of the stations where I worked was used to measure the RF levels around the tower. BTW, I am 69 years old, in better-than-average health, have had five children who all turned out normal, and still have a 140 I/Q. So all those years of working on powerful transmitters hasn't given me cancer or any other sort of fatal disease. Please everbody -- let's not be so fearful.

Oh -- as to the cell towers disguised as palm trees -- in other areas they look like pine trees. It's not being sneaky; it's just that regular towers are considered to be an eyesore, so the "disguise" towers are considered to be more "environmentally friendly." The old analog cell phones depended on tall, widely-spaced towers but the digital systems used now depend on low-power sites that need to be closer together. That's why there are so many of them. Now, if you want to live in fear that's your right. Use some common sense and not yack on your cell phone for hours a day. Keep your conversations short and you'll be OK.

my freshman year of high school we (the students) had to vote on weather or not sprint could put a tower on top of our main building. i tried to tell everyone about the cancer risks and the fact that it would mean worse cell phone reception. no one listened and assumed they would get better reception, and sprint was throwing in a new scoreboard. everyone regretted it (no more texting in class because there's no reception) but now it's all a thing of the past.

In our town in rural Ontario, Canada, we used to have three public phones. One right downtown, one near the busiest store, and one at a gas station. There are still phones in two large supermarkets on one side of town (to call a taxi if you need one), but if you on the other side of town, there isn't a single public phone left.

So, lets say my daughter goes to the movies and needs a ride home, how does she call me? She used to call from the public phone. Now, unless I lend her my cell phone (which I only own for emergencies, and that is pretty much its only use), she has no way to call for a ride.

I guess whoever is in charge of public phones has just decided that since 'everybody' owns a cell phone, public phones are obsolete. It is a vicious cycle. They take down the public phones because they assume everybody owns a cell phone, so everybody has to get a cell phone, because there are no more public phones.

I own a portion of a large industrial building. Being the perfect location for a cell phone tower, the cell phone companies came a callin' to use our facility as the perfect place to install a tower in a valley with good freeway access but no cell phone reception. Their contract was financialy lucrative but permanently binding. In other words, when cell phone tower radiation is finally SHOWN to be a problem we would not have the ability to cancel the contract and have the tower removed. Actualy we could never cancel the contract. We did NOT let them install the tower, but we now have several neighboring buildings with fake tree towers right next to us.

It would be nice if safeguards against the dangers of technologies like cell phones could be implemented before the techdnologies are marketed and become mainstream. Also, no one seems to notice that our dependence on these technologies, while they make life easier, is, in addition to causing us to become sick, disabling us in many ways from knowing how to function without them. I can literally feel my inner ear heating up when I talk on a cell phone for more than a couple of minutes.On a sensitive day, If my TV is on, and even many times my computer, I feel the electromagnetic waves penetrating my entire being-even though I have no idea what this does to me. Already the bees are disappearing, I wonder how these towers, etc. will affect birds and other animals. Dogs are especially sensitive to sound and I imagine on a level we can't feel that they are affected by these things too. Soem technologies and innovations can be true blessings to people, however, with all of the genius that is invested in these technologies, you would think there would be the equal intelligence of making them safe to use at the same time. And justification of these things are silly sometimes. A cell phone may save a life of someone stranded somewhere, but at the same moment someone probably acquires brain cancer in some other place or dies of a car accident from talking on their cell phone. Wireless technology I think is an advance in many ways, for aesthetic to practical reasons to making life easier, but it'snot the be all and end all of assisting functionality, and bottom line, don't mass market something until warnings and protocols are in place to protect society from the dangers of the use of it.

I live in Europe, and in the large city where I live, there are things resembling cellphone towers, or antenna's basically everywhere. It seems there is one on top of every other apartment building. There are several right around our house, maybe 1/2 kilometer away. I have 2 questions: 1. Why in the world does there need to be so many cellphone towers/antenna's, and right where lots of people live too? And 2. What can I do to protect myself from all this EMR short of moving? (I do wear a Q-link) Does anyone have any advice?
