Voters this month rejected a proposal to fluoridate the city of St. Genevieve, Missouri's water system, 54 percent to 46 percent.
The proposal was in a nonbinding referendum, and the city's Board of Aldermen expect to vote on the issue in coming weeks.
One of the Aldermen attended a board meeting wearing a "Vote No To Fluoridation" T-shirt.
Fluoridation has been controversial here since this city 65 miles south of St. Louis began studying it last year.
From 1980 to 1993, the city's water had been supplemented with fluoride. But the city never resumed fluoridation after the Flood of 1993 ravaged this city of 4,400 people and damaged its old water plant.
In April, the Board of Aldermen endorsed an ordinance to restore fluoride to the city water supply by a vote of 5-3. But after several people testified against fluoride at two subsequent meetings, members said they were hesitant to vote because they were unsure of how their constituents felt. That's when the board scheduled this referendum.

Referendum such as these are popping up all over the place. Just this week it was announced that a similar vote would take place in another Missouri town - Ozark, after residents showed up in force to halt efforts by the state of Missouri to assist them in getting their water supply fluoridated.

It is encouraging to see local communities waking up to the truth about fluoride. I believe the internet is a major factor in facilitating this awareness. People are not going to be pushed around by large companies who push their agenda through researchers who were paid off to legitimize their agenda by faulty studies.
Both of these stories were taken from the Fluoride News Tracker which is maintained by the Fluoride Action Network, which is an excellent resource for information on this topic.

No Increase in Cavities After Ending Water Fluoridation
A recent study seems to refute the fact that fluoridated water reduces the rate of cavities.
The city of Kuopio in central Finland had fluoridated piped water for 33 years, beginning in 1959.
Due to strong opposition by various civic groups, water fluoridation was stopped at the end of 1992.
Changes in the average cavity rates between 1992 and 1995 in fluoridated Kuopio were compared to those in Jyvaskyla, a nearby non-fluoridated community.
In 1992 and 1995, independent random samples of all children aged 3, 6 and 9 years were drawn in both cities.
The authors note that despite the discontinuation of water fluoridation, no increase in the incidence of cavities in chidren's primary teeth was observed.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:
I am not really surprised at these results all. The diet is the most important issue in preventing cavities. If you want another outstanding book for your library you can obtain Dr. Weston Price's book 'Nutrition and Physical Degeneration'. He was one of the most prominent dentists at the turn of the century and wondered why so many children were getting cavities. He realized that it was the introduction of processed foods. So he traveled all over the world and documented how the introduction of processed food severely damaged the teeth. One does not even have to read the book as the pictures tell the whole story. The book was written in 1920 and is very true still today.
