Bee propolis helps prevent the formation of dental plaque, according to new research. This effect seems to be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of certain enzymes, which synthesize glucans from sucrose.
Researchers analyzed propolis extracts, from samples obtained from 2 different regions in Brazil and analyzed the activity of enzymes exposed to the extracts.
The propolis effectively inhibited the activity of the enzymes from 45% to 95% at concentrations between 0.75 and 3.0 mg of propolis/ml.
They also note that the active compound in propolis responsible for this anti-plaque effect, is unknown and attempts should be made to identify it.

However, do not forget that a high sugar and grain diet is what causes the bugs to become active to begin with. So even if propolis were an incredible agent, it would be far better to take a proactive approach and head off the bugs at the start by following the diet I recommend.
