A hydrolyzed whey protein-based baby formula may
help reduce crying in colicky infants, new research findings suggest.
Researchers from the Netherlands performed a 1-week
study and randomly assigned 43 infants to be fed with either hydrolyzed
whey formula or standard cow's milk-based formula.
Infants who were fed the whey-based
formula cried for about 63 minutes less per day than infants
fed standard formula.
"Substitution of cow's milk formula by an extensively
hydrolyzed whey formula is effective in the treatment of infantile colic,"
the researchers conclude.
Colic
is defined as excessive and inconsolable crying that lasts at least 3
hours a day for 3 days in one week, for a period of more than 3 weeks.
The cause is unknown, but it tends to taper off after 4 to 5 months of
age.
