Fat May Be Wealth Of Stem Cells

Adult stem cells from human fat were transformed into healthy muscle, cartilage and bone cells in the latest breakthrough for stem cell research.

The study is one of several recent discoveries that have begun to shatter a long held belief that embryos and fetuses are the only significant source of stem cells.

Fat may answer claims that adult cells, formerly taken from the brain or bone marrow, are too difficult to obtain. "We usually think about fat as sort of worthless, something that everyone just wants to get rid of and throw away," said research co-leader Marc Hedrick, of the U of Calif. School of Medicine. "This work makes us think much differently about fat tissue." The researchers used quarts of fat obtained through liposuction of patients' hips and thighs.

This pivotal discovery is one of a series of studies all pointing to the incredible promise of adult stem cell research. Unlike destructive research on embryonic stem cells, which has demonstrated no such promise, adult stem cell research holds tremendous potential to assist our patients with serious diseases. The scientific evidence suggests that we can achieve our desire to cure diabetes, Alzheimer's and a host of other diseases by following the moral path of adult stem cell research. It is time for the NIH to direct funding to these ethical research projects rather than to those involving the destruction of human lives. When we arrive at our destination, we will be glad to find we have not paid the price of progress with our most precious ethical principles.

In a press release April 10 CMDA hailed the study as further reason that the National Institutes of Health should fund ethical adult stem cell research rather than destructive human embryonic stem cell research.
