Three Rules for Developing Courage

By Brian Tracy

The First Responsibility of Leadership

The step-by-step development of courage in yourself is the first responsibility of leadership. The second responsibility is to develop and instill courage in others, your staff, your children, your spouse, your friends. But you must begin with yourself because you can't give away something that you don't have. You can only encourage others to the degree to which you experience and demonstrate courage yourself. You set the tone and determine the standard.

Courage Is Mastery of Fear

Here's the first rule: "Everyone is afraid." You're afraid, I'm afraid, everyone you meet is afraid in some way, often in many ways. As Mark Twain said, "Courage is not absence of fear; it is control of fear, mastery of fear." The brave person is the person who acts in spite of his or her fear, who faces the fear, feels the fear and moves forward regardless.

Confront Your Fears

Here's the second rule: "Fears diminish and lose their power over you as you confront them and move toward them; conversely, every time you back away from a fear situation, the fear grows and becomes more powerful."

Make It A Habit

The only way to develop courage is to consciously and continuously make a habit of confronting your fear of treating every fear-inducing situation as a challenge and as an opportunity to become stronger, more resolute.

Do The Thing You Fear

Here's the third rule:

"Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain."

Psychologists call this the process of "systematic desensitization," doing it over and over until it holds no fear for you at all.

Many businesspeople who have been so afraid of public speaking that they couldn't lead a silent prayer in a phone booth have used this process of eliminating fear.

Dr. Mercola's EFT Expansion

When you apply effectively EFT fear doesn't stand a chance. Fear is one of the easiest things that EFT can handle.

Some simple statements to use in your taping sequence would be:

Even though I am afraid of (whatever you are afraid of) I choose to be calm and confident.

Remember to say calm and confident with great emphasis each time as it will greatly help the effectiveness.

Also remember that if you are in a public situation and you are uncomfortable about tapping in public you can just separately apply gentle pressure on each of the points and say the statement silently.

I believe the full sequence stated aloud is probably more effective, but I have had success with both methods.

"Do the thing you fear" is risky advice if physical safety is involved, because fear is meant to warn us of danger.  For years I refused to drive in heavy traffic despite strong pressure to "get over my fear" and do so.  I didn't know why I was afraid, but I trusted there was a reason.  I have since learned that my depth perception is faulty, and I could have caused a ghastly accident.

As a riding instructor I see people routinely place themselves and their horses in danger by doing things that are beyond their skill level or inherently unsafe.  They remain afraid because the danger is real.  They overcome fear by riding safely, while building skills and learning emergency procedures.

Fear serves a valuable purpose, and may reflect a sound intuition even when one cannot explain why.  It would be irresponsible to encourage anyone to ignore a fear in any situation where there is potential danger.  The article should have made that point chrystal clear.

It's great to develop courage and do what you fear. The problem that I'm seeing is that fear is all around us and that so many people are feeling not only their own fears, but those of everyone else. There are times that fear is a clue that there's something wrong or caution is needed, but more and more there seems to be a growing blanket of fear and free floating anxiety.

Fear is all around us. You feel it when you watch the news, of course. How can you not? Everything seems to be chaos. That’s when you’re aware of the fear, it’s in your face and incontrovertible. What about all the fear that’s impacting you without your awareness or knowledge?

Depression, anxiety, mood elevating drugs, suicide, road rage, escalating senseless violence and crime, these are symptoms of an ever-increasing breakdown in our energy fields due to the vibration of fear. We don’t even notice it because it is the norm.

When we are fearful, or open to the fear around us, our defenses begin to crumble. We are more and more at the mercy of those around us who would seek to control. By stepping out of that frequency, you come back to your normal, centered self and can withstand the thoughts, fears, desires of the people and world around you. You are in control again, no longer a victim of our times or your life and the people in it.

Next time you're anxious, fearful or worried, think about it, is this your fear? If not, you can choose to take steps to move out of, or deflect this fear. I've found a protective device that works! But I don't want to come off as an advertisement...and don't mean to be vaugh either. If you want to know more, just ask me and I'll share it. But the main thing is, be aware of what's really impacting you and you might be surprised.
