As many as 12% of pediatric patients hospitalized in intensive care units catch potentially life-threatening infections during their care, according to the results of a new national survey by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Children with the infections were at an increased risk of death. Preventing these infections should be a national priority.
Such infections -- which are most likely a result of the extensive use of invasive devices and procedures, are frequently reported for adults staying in intensive care units.
The researchers found that these infections placed children at more than triple the risk of death of non-infected children within the 4 weeks following the survey. Infections occurred most frequently in the:
Children who underwent procedures involving catheters, IVs or a ventilator were at increased risk of infection compared with those who did not come in contact with these devices.

First, let me say, I have great admiration and respect for the many dedicated professionals who work in Intensive Care Units (ICU) at hospitals around the world. Their job is to tend to the very sick and dying, and they do it well. The nature of ICUs are to care for the chronically ill who typically have compromised immune systems and are taking large doses of antibotics.
These antibotics serve as a wonderful breeding ground for resistant bacteria that can easily find their way into other patients. For this reason, you should avoid hospitals unless absolutely necessary.
Three years ago I posted a study claiming one out of ten patients in the ICU are there as a result of a doctor related side effect. Obviously physicians do not do this intentionally, but many times is the hospital staff that actually carries the infection to the patient. Basically, once the patient is admitted to the ICU, they have another one in ten chance of getting a serious life-threatening infection.
As far as children are concerned, the psychological trauma of strangers probing and poking them has the potential to scar their neurology for life and predispose them to devastating illness in the future. This far outweighs any microbiological danger. I see patients regularly with phobias traceable to earlier hospitalizations and being held down for immunizations and blood draws.
Folks, this is a prescription for disaster. We need to be aligned in our thoughts to transform this paradigm. It doesn't work; we know that. Most doctors know that, even if they don't acknowledge it.
How can you help?
You can be a beacon of hope and encouragement. By follow the eating plan, you will stay healthy and out of the hospital. Your friends and family will notice a difference in your health and attitude, which will encourage them to adopt the program. Tell everyone you know about my website and e-mail them links to articles you think they may find useful. Keep your friends and family healthy and out of the hospital.
I am working on modifying my eating plan and creating different levels to target beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. This will make it much easier to start for newbies.
