An environmental
report by the Environmental Protection Agency warning that
mercury in the environment poses serious health risks to children
will be released.
The report mentions
emissions of mercury from coal-fired power plants and other
industrial sources, along with dangerous mercury levels in
fish as potential problems.
Children are more
vulnerable to mercury, and are more exposed, because they
often play outside where environmental pollutants are present.
Children also drink more water, eat more food and breathe
more air than adults, making them more likely to be exposed
to pollutants.
Evidence is increasing
that mercury is also accumulating in women of childbearing
age, according to the report.
The report has
already been delayed for several months, reportedly due to
an unusual level of inspection by other federal agencies.
