CDC: Obesity Fastest Growing Health Threat in U.S.

While tobacco is the largest cause of death in the United States, obesity is rapidly catching up and should be a priority for the U.S. health care system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

They also noted that the threat of bioterrorism should not be exaggerated compared to other more traditional health threats.

Regarding obesity, it was noted that a community-based approach to weight loss could be useful. For instance, this could include offering more places to walk on residential roads.

Additionally, small lifestyle changes can lead to major improvements.

Cutting out 100 calories per day, either by diet or exercise, is enough to prevent weight gain in most people. Small changes, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, can easily amount to this goal.

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:

Obesity is a serious and growing problem in the United States, where two-thirds of adults are either overweight or obese. Obesity-related problems such as diabetes are also creating major problems for many people.

Most people who are obese are not happy about it and would like to return to a healthy weight. They know about the health implications but are frustrated by the excess of conflicting and often wrong information from medical "experts."

The good news here is that obesity is nearly 100 percent preventable by following some basic health principles.

The first is to eat a diet of whole, nutritious foods rather than the processed ones that line most grocery store shelves. This includes cutting out grains and sugar, as these are two of the major culprits behind weight gain. You can view my nutrition plan to help get your diet on the right track.

Exercise is another extremely important factor. If you are overweight, you will need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day to experience any weight loss benefits. Major studies have shown that 60 minutes a day is actually best. Ideally, the exercise should be continuous, but it could be split up into two 30-minute sections.

Emotions also play a major role in obesity, as many people’s weight loss efforts get sabotaged by emotional eating. This is where the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) comes in. EFT can be profoundly helpful in alleviating not only food cravings, but also the underlying emotional challenges that can lead you to eat unhealthy food. For more information on EFT, check out my free 25-page EFT manual.

You can learn the details on how to effectively and permanently lose weight in my new book, The No-Grain Diet. In the book I discuss the importance of choosing proper foods and give you ways to easily integrate them into your daily life. Plus, I expand on how you can use EFT to overcome the emotional challenges that can make it difficult to keep the weight off for good.

Another option for weight loss is the completely nutritious meal replacement Living Fuel. It’s best if you plan ahead and prepare nutritious meals from whole foods, but many people don’t take the time and are then tempted by unhealthy fast food when it comes time for lunch. As an alternative to fast food or other less nutritious meal replacements, consider Living Fuel. It comes in a convenient powder form and is packed with vitamins, minerals, proteins, essential fats, enzymes, co-enzymes, herbs, botanical extracts, and soluble and insoluble plant fibers.
