Drugs' Expiration Dates Designed to Increase Drug Company Profits

In an attempt to determine whether drugs really stop working after their expiration date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted tests on more than 100 prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The results showed that about 90 percent of them were safe and effective far beyond their labeled expiration date--one was even good for 15 years past it.

Researchers determined that drug expiration dates are not put in place to suggest the product will no longer be good after that date, but rather to guarantee the drug will be good up until that date. Experts say that drug manufacturers use expiration dates for marketing purposes rather than scientific reasons, as drugs would not be as profitable if they had a shelf life of 10 years or more. They conclude that most drugs likely keep for years, with a few exceptions including nitroglycerin, insulin and some liquid antibiotics.

Though this study was posted over three years ago, many have not seen it. Over 15 years ago the FDA found that 90 percent of more than 100 drugs they tested were good beyond the expiration date, and some for as long as 15 years. This just adds insult to injury giving the drug companies even more money to devastate our health.

This study really sheds some insight into where the drug companies’ priorities lie. Not only are drug prices through the roof, but on top of this people end up shelling out even more money to replace the drugs more often than necessary.

Many people--2 million Americans each year in all--are then plagued by adverse drug reactions caused by the drugs they paid premium prices for.

Much of the problem would be avoided if you find a physician who uses drugs only as a last resort and who has a firm understanding of the natural medical principles advocated on this site. Prescription drugs are widely overused and reducing your personal intake of drugs will likely improve the way you feel and lighten the load on your wallet.

So how can you reduce your need for drugs? Well, there are certainly times when drugs are necessary, but there are more times when they are not. Strengthening your immune system--your body’s natural line of defense--is one of the most important factors. Check out my nutrition plan for some advice on how to optimize your health naturally through diet.

If you want to further understand how corporations--and government--manipulate science and the media by preying upon the public trust--and you want to know how to protect yourself--I highly recommend the book Trust Us, We're Experts. It is truly one of those books that all Americans should read, and would make an important gift for any young adult who wants to maintain control over him or herself as they enter "the real world."
