Farmed salmon, which is being eaten in increasing amounts
by millions of Americans, were found to contain high levels
of dangerous PCBs. The study found concentrations of PCBs
some 16 times higher than those of wild, ocean-fished salmon.
PCBs, an industrial chemical that has been banned in the
United States for decades, have been linked to cancer and
impaired fetal brain development. Although they have not been
used for some time, PCBs are persistent organic pollutants,
and they still exist in the environment. Most salmon in the
United States are raised on fish "farms" and fed
meals of ground-up fish that have absorbed PCBs in the environment.
