Too Much Zinc Can Cause Anemia

Zinc has the potential to be toxic if too much is taken. Excess zinc can result in copper deficiency, which is associated with anemia.

Zinc supplementation is common as the nutrient is available in many over-the-counter products. Physicians should be aware of the potential for zinc-induced copper deficiency and should recoagnize that it is an avoidable and manageable condition.

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:

Most of you know that I am a minimalist when it comes to supplements. When patients first come to see me, many have been started down a path that has them unnecessarily spending $400 to $500 a month on supplements, many of which, they say, do not work.

Each of us has a unique metabolic and genetic variability. This means that the same supplement that would help one person with one disease could devastate the next person with the exact same disease.

If more natural medical doctors appreciated this they would be far more cautious in using supplements.

Multivitamins, which can contain dozens of different nutrients, can be especially problematic. If your body is sensitive to one component of the pill, then the supplement could end up promoting disease rather than health. The more nutrients in the pill, the greater the chances that your body may be sensitive, and the harder it is to determine the exact cause of the adverse reaction.

There are a few supplements that do seem to make sense universally though. One would be good bacteria, which is useful if you are not healthy and have been eating grains and sugars.

Additionally, nearly all of us need fish oil because the typical fish sold in supermarkets and restaurants is grossly contaminated with mercury and PCBs. Liquid fish oil from Carlson is what I recommend from a convenience and health perspective in the summer.

If you can’t find this product in your health food store it is available in our site store. We also carry a safe, healthy and delicious brand of Wild Red Alaskan Salmon, the only fish I have discovered, via independent lab testing, to be free of mercury and other toxins.
