More Organic Foods Coming to Supermarkets

Organic food sales make up less than two percent of the total food market, but sales have been growing at more than 20 percent a year. Consumers are increasing their demand for organic products and mainstream food companies are complying.

Many traditional food companies are getting into the organic market with new products or by buying organic companies. For instance, one of the largest organic food producers, Horizon Organic, was purchased by Dean Foods, which is the largest milk producer in the United States.

As mainstream companies, which already have ties to supermarkets and other food outlets, invest in more organic products, organic foods are sure to increase in supermarkets across the country.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

It is encouraging that organic products are gaining popularity. Many patients that I see, especially those living in rural areas, do not currently have access to organic foods. Adding these products to mainstream supermarkets will at least give consumers some healthy food choices.

The downside to organic food is, of course, the price. Many people opt to not purchase organic simply because they cannot afford it. I suspect that as organic products gain popularity and more competitors are introduced, prices will inevitably go down.

In terms of vegetables, organic is certainly better because they typically have more antioxidants and nutrients and fewer pesticides and chemicals than conventionally grown produce. But, don’t use this as an excuse to avoid non-organic vegetables. If for whatever reason you can’t obtain organic vegetables, non-organic vegetables are much healthier than no vegetables at all.

In terms of other food products, just because something is organic doesn’t necessarily make it better for you. When you start seeing organic Coke you can fully appreciate this. Sugar is sugar is sugar no matter how pure it is.

The same thing goes for organic whole wheat bread. Both organic bread and organic sugar contribute to chronic degenerative disease in the majority of people who use them as I discuss in my new book, The No-Grain Diet.

Another example is commercial organic milk. Pasteurization destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamin content, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamin B12, and vitamin B6, kills beneficial bacteria, promotes pathogens and is associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth problems in children, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and cancer. This is true whether the milk is organic or not.

Raw milk, on the other hand, is a completely different, extremely beneficial food, and Sally Fallon has compiled a Web site that provides further information about this important food source.
