Millions Have Tried the Atkins Diet in UK

Millions of people in the UK have tried the Atkins diet, despite some experts’ claims that the diet is unhealthy and could lead to kidney problems or an increased risk of bowel cancer.

Only one in a hundred people reported that they believed the health warnings about the Atkins diet, and most reported that the diet was effective for weight loss.

There is little research available on the long-term effects of the diet, leading some to say that more research is needed, however no significant medical evidence has come out against the diet to date.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

My book, The No-Grain Diet, will be published in England in January. Hopefully this will help them to refine the Atkins program even further. The scientists are indeed correct--the Atkins diet can be dangerous for some, but the central issue is finding out for whom.

About one-third of people do relatively well on Atkins, while one-third do so-so, and the last third do absolutely terrible. The "secret" involves understanding your nutritional type so you understand which group you belong in.

Once you understand that certain people function optimally with a high-protein diet while others need a high-carbohydrate one, it becomes clear why different people experience different results from the Atkins diet.

There really is no one diet that is right for everyone. People are unique and so are their needs for food. However, most people would indeed benefit from limiting sugar and grains, as these things promote health problems in the vast majority of people who consume them.

Additionally, and this is one area where the Atkins diet falls short, the quality of your food is extremely important. Even if you are one of those individuals who is suited to a high-protein diet, if you eat mostly traditionally-raised beef, which is full of antibiotics and raised on a diet of mostly grain, then you are not doing much good for your health. Even fish is problematic, as most all of it is contaminated with mercury and PCBs.

A much healthier, and tastier, option is to consume "healthy" meats like the grass-fed bison and free-range ostrich that we now carry. Whether from this site or elsewhere, I urge you to try these meats and experience the taste and health benefits for yourself.

Additionally, we have conducted extensive testing on fish from a company that takes the salmon from the interior of Alaska and were surprised and delighted to find that the mercury levels were virtually undetectable.

If you enjoy the delicious taste and immense health benefits of some of the world's finest salmon--Alaskan wild red--but you are concerned about the mercury now found in dangerous amounts in almost all fish, then please consider trying the Alaskan wild red salmon from Vital Choice that tested safe and that I now carry. And remember, unless you can verify that the fish you are eating has been lab-tested and found to be free on contaminants, don’t eat it!
